Chapter 221: The Harvest & Shadow of the Apex
The biting mountain wind carried away the final plumes of white steam and bitter ozone rising from the scorched slush field. Seventy meters out from the Research Center’s blast gates, the desolate landscape was littered with the silent, broken remains of mutated infected that had fallen during the frantic clash. The ground was turned into a churned sea of black mud, shattered ice, and dark, frozen gore.
With the perimeter confirmed clear and the valley stragglers scattering aimlessly into the snowy pine forests, Han Zheng stood near the threshold of the heavy blast gates. His dark eyes scanned the perimeter with steady, unwavering vigilance. Beside him stood Lin Qing, her orange-core rifle held at a low ready, while Song Yan, Lieutenant Chen, Xiao Li, and a squad of heavily armed guards gathered near the threshold, carrying specialized containment crates and core extraction kits.
"Keep your eyes on the treeline," Han Zheng instructed, his voice low and authoritative. "Song Yan, Chen, lead the collection detail. Extract every intact energy core from the field. We need to restock our reserves immediately."
"Understood, Commander," Song Yan replied, nodding to the guards as they stepped past the partially opened gates and fanned out across the mud.
The team moved systematically across the battleground. Armed with extraction tools, the guards went to work on the fallen mutated corpses. Using specialized hand-held drills, they cracked open the reinforced skull plates and sternum housings of the lower-tier mutated infected, harvesting glowing red energy cores.
Further out, near the crater left by the Alpha’s initial assault, Lieutenant Chen and Xiao Li knelt beside the massive, charred carcasses of the elite variants. Using heavy insulated tongs, Lieutenant Chen carefully extracted two glowing, high-density orange energy cores. The vibrant orange light cast a warm, flickering glow against their tactical gauntlets as Chen secured them inside a containment cylinder.
"That’s six orange cores and over twenty red cores so far," Lieutenant Chen noted, wiping a smear of dark grease from his cheek as he sealed the container with a heavy metallic click.
While the depot guards finished securing the extracted cores, Han Zheng stepped further toward the perimeter, stopping near the edge where the churned slush met the dense pine forest. This was the exact spot where Su Xiao’s mother had taken her final backward step into the misty woods moments earlier.
Han Zheng closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, tuning out the low hum of the base’s hydraulic gates and the clinking of tools. His heightened senses focused entirely on the surrounding atmosphere. He picked up the quiet rustle of pine needles, the dripping of melting snow... and then, a faint, erratic rhythm.
It was a heartbeat. Rapid, shallow, and trembling with intense fear.
Han Zheng’s eyes snapped open, his gaze locking instantly onto a drainage culvert half-buried beneath a collapsed boulder fifteen meters inside the treeline.
"Xiao Li, Lieutenant Chen, on me," Han Zheng said quietly, signaling with two raised fingers. "We have a life sign in the brush."
Lin Qing immediately raised her rifle from the rampart edge above, covering her team as Xiao Li and Lieutenant Chen unholstered their sidearms and moved smoothly into formation behind Han Zheng. They approached the frozen culvert with measured, silent steps, their boots crunching softly against the crusted snow.
Han Zheng reached out, grabbing the edge of the iron grate blocking the culvert, and pulled. With a loud, metallic screech, the rust-caked bars groaned under his strength and gave way, exposing the dark, narrow pipe beneath.
"Don’t shoot! Please, don’t shoot!" a frantic, ragged voice screamed from the darkness of the pipe.
"Step out slowly! Hands where we can see them!" Lieutenant Chen ordered, keeping his red-core sidearm trained squarely on the opening.
A figure scrambled backward out of the culvert on hands and knees, hyperventilating violently in the freezing air. It was a man clad in torn, mud-splattered tactical gear—severely battered, shivering from hypothermia, and clutching an empty, cracked helmet. He wasn’t infected; his pale face was soaked in cold sweat, his eyes wide with absolute, blind terror as he looked up at the heavily armed soldiers surrounding him.
Xiao Li stepped forward, grabbing the man by his vest and pulling him cleanly out of the mud, propping him up against a nearby boulder. "Easy. Calm down. You’re speaking to human forces."
The survivor gasped, clutching his chest as he stared at the base’s massive concrete blast gates standing looming in the distance. "Human... You... you have a base here? A real facility?"
"We ask the questions," Han Zheng said coldly, stepping up to the shivering scout. His sharp gaze took in the man’s gear—it was high-grade, non-standard military weave, bearing scorch marks and a heavily smudged unit patch that had been intentionally scraped off. "Who are you? And what were you doing hiding here?"
The scout swallowed hard, his teeth chattering uncontrollably as Song Yan handed him a metallic flask of warm water. He drank greedily, wiping his mouth with a trembling forearm before looking up at Han Zheng with hollow, terrified eyes.
"I... I was part of a long-range recon team," the man babbled, his voice breaking. "We got caught in the wave... We were tracking the horde’s movement across the northern ridge when the blue core mutated took over. My whole squad got torn apart... I crawled into that pipe three days ago and prayed the infected wouldn’t smell me..."
"Tracking the horde?" Lin Qing’s voice came crisp through Han Zheng’s comms earpiece as she monitored the interaction from above. "Ask him who sent them."
Han Zheng leaned down, his eyes narrowing as he pinned the scout with an icy stare. "Who deployed your recon team into this sector? Who is tracking these high-tier movements?"
The scout flinched, looking around nervously as if expecting someone to strike him down from the trees. He leaned in, his voice dropping to a trembling whisper. "The... The Apex. A massive military syndicate."
Song Yan and Lieutenant Chen exchanged a swift, sharp glance.
"The Apex?" Lieutenant Chen repeated, his grip tightening on his sidearm.
"They’re... they’re scanning the entire region," the scout stammered, his eyes darting frantically between the soldiers. "They have long-range radar arrays and high-altitude monitoring networks tracking energy signatures. They’re targeting every major human establishment appearing on their radar across the territories..."
The scout paused, shivering violently as he looked back toward the dark forest. "They... they were the ones who routed the outer hordes this way. They knew this facility was buried under the mountain. When their scanners picked up high-density human energy signatures from your base, they drove the entire migration line straight toward your valley..."
"They drove that Blue Core Alpha horde into our base?" Song Yan grunted, his jaw clenching in anger. "Why? What are they trying to pull?"
The scout shook his head frantically, genuine, blind terror evident in his eyes. "I don’t know! I swear on my life, I don’t know their ultimate goal! Low-level scouts like us aren’t told anything! We just follow the grid coordinates and report energy spikes! They don’t care who gets wiped out in the process... if your base shows up on their radar, they come for it!"
Han Zheng stood up straight, his expression dark and unreadable as he looked toward the heavy blast gates. The pieces of the puzzle were fitting together, revealing a much larger, far more sinister web moving in the shadows beyond the mountains.
"Xiao Li, Lieutenant Chen, secure the prisoner," Han Zheng ordered quietly. "Take him to the holding block. Have Dr. Zhou inspect him for injuries and run a full contamination scan."
"Understood, Commander," Xiao Li nodded, grabbing the shivering scout by the shoulder and guiding him back toward the partially open blast gates, flanked by Lieutenant Chen and the depot guards carrying the crates of harvested cores.
Han Zheng walked slowly back toward the base, stepping onto the heavy elevator lift that carried him up to the upper view ramparts.
Lin Qing was standing near the concrete parapet, watching the heavy blast gates groan as Song Yan initiated the hydraulic seal sequence below. The massive four-foot-thick steel doors slid together with a deep, echoing thud, locking the Research Center safely away from the outside world once more.
The biting wind howled across the platform, whipping Lin Qing’s dark hair across her face. She didn’t turn around as Han Zheng stepped up beside her, but her dark eyes remained fixed on the misty mountain pass where the scout had been found.
"You heard him?" Han Zheng asked quietly, resting his hands on the freezing metal railing.
Lin Qing’s hand tightened against the cold, composite receiver of her rifle. Her knuckles turned white, her jaw setting into a rigid, icy line. The realization that this terrifying siege wasn’t just a random act of nature, but a calculated movement tied to a familiar, ruthless entity, hung heavy in the freezing air.
She lowered her gaze toward the desolate, blood-stained valley below, her voice dropping into a grim, chilling tone.
"The Apex again!!"
