Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

Chapter 218: Unstable Core

The three synchronized beams of orange energy cut through the freezing mountain air like streaks of liquid fire, converging precisely on the Apex’s unshielded sternum node.

The impact was absolute. A blinding, deafening explosion of orange and blue energy erupted seventy meters out in the slush field, lighting up the gray, overcast sky and violently shaking the heavy structural framing of the upper ramparts.

The sheer kinetic shockwave hit the Apex square in its chest plate, shattering its hardened external chitin armor like brittle glass. Volatile blue light burst violently from the ruptured housing of its central processing node, and a high-frequency scream of agonizing rage tore from the monster’s throat, echoing wildly off the surrounding granite cliffs and rattling the viewports of the Research Center.

The towering creature staggered backward three full steps, its claws digging deep into the mud as dark, viscous fluid sprayed across the white landscape.

"Direct hit!" Old Wang roared over the roaring wind, racking the hot, spent casing out of his sniper rifle with a practiced snap as white steam hissed off the barrel.

"It’s not down yet!" Lin Qing warned, her eyes glued to the rubber eyepiece of her scope. "Look at its core! It’s overloading!"

Instead of collapsing into the mud, the Alpha’s damaged processing node began to violently surge. Driven by pure, instinctual survival, the monster lost every shred of composure and entered a terrifying, unstable berserk state.

The leaking blue light surrounding its shattered chest turned white-hot, expanding into a frantic, volatile aura that sizzled against the falling sleet.

With a guttural, bone-chattering roar, the Alpha slammed both fists into the ground, detonating its remaining internal energy reserves into a continuous, three-hundred-sixty-degree shockwave of raw kinetic and thermal force.

The blast tore through the slush field like a localized bomb. Su Xiao’s mother, caught at point-blank range while recovering from her previous strike, was slammed backward by the sheer concussive pressure. She skidded fifty feet across the mud, her stance broken as the violent wave rolled directly toward the Research Center’s main blast gates.

Down in the lower loading bay, the heavy gate firing ports rattled violently under the initial tremor. Song Yan braced his frame against the primary control console, his boots slipping slightly on the cold concrete as he adjusted his stance. "The gate ports are too narrow! Lieutenant Chen, you can’t get a wide enough angle from down here to suppress that blast!"

"I’m moving up!" Lieutenant Chen shouted, already pivoting on his heel. Leaving Song Yan to hold the lower gate controls, Lieutenant Chen sprinted up the metallic stairs leading to the upper view ramparts, his boots clattering loudly against the steps.

He burst onto the upper platform just as the concussive wave hit the base’s exterior walls, causing the floor plates to vibrate underfoot. "Commander! I need clearance on the railing!"

"Take the center line!" Han Zheng ordered instantly, stepping aside to give him an unobstructed angle over the perimeter wall.

Lieutenant Chen planted his feet near the cold metal railing, raising both hands toward the thrashing, berserk monster seventy meters out. The air around his forearms distorted with intense, shimmering heat as his thermal powers flared to their absolute peak. The metal seams of his gauntlets glowed a brilliant, incandescent orange as he unleashed a sweeping, concentrated wall of white-hot fire directly across the slush field.

Beside him, Han Zheng stepped up to the railing, his instincts taking over instantly. Recognizing that Lieutenant Chen’s flames needed raw force to push through the Alpha’s volatile blast radius, Han Zheng focused his own power. He raised his right hand, tapping into his kinetic manipulation, and unleashed a powerful, localized kinetic shockwave aimed directly behind Lieutenant Chen’s thermal wave.

The kinetic pulse struck the wall of fire from behind, acting like a massive, atmospheric piston. It compressed and propelled Lieutenant Chen’s thermal flames forward at twice their normal speed, driving a roaring wave of superheated fire straight through the Alpha’s kinetic storm.

The combined thermal-kinetic strike hit the berserk Apex full force, engulfing the monster in a roaring inferno that suppressed its volatile shockwaves and kept it pinned in the mud, buying Su Xiao’s mother crucial seconds to regain her footing.

On the ramparts, Lin Qing and Old Wang moved with practiced, lethal coordination, swiftly clearing their rifles’ overheated thermal chambers and slamming fresh orange-core capacitors into place.

Lin Qing pressed her eye back against her optical scope, tracking the thrashing, burning shape of the Alpha through the wall of roaring fire, her crosshairs locking onto the fully exposed, crackling core node in its chest as they waited for Su Xiao’s mother to re-engage for the final, lethal blow.

Deep within the upper-level secondary residential suite, the secondary tremors from the surface battle shuddered through the structural support columns, causing the light fixtures overhead to hum softly.

The air inside the locked room remained suffocatingly tense, saturated with the faint, metallic scent of ozone and the invisible psychic static vibrating from the surface duel.

Xiao Li stood near the center of the living quarters, his posture rigid and alert as he kept a watchful eye on the children.

In the far corner, Han Ye remained crossed-legged near the base of the concrete pillar, his small body sitting perfectly still in his deep shadow trance. The dark, inky vapor curling off his fingertips had thinned slightly, his breathing was slightly quick from the exertion and he was breaking into a sweat as his awareness stayed woven throughout the base’s lower foundations.

Su Xiao sat on the edge of her bed, her small hands tightly balling the fabric of her trousers.

Every time a muffled concussive thud resonated down through the ceiling, her small shoulders flinched. Tears continued to trace pale tracks down her cheeks, but she stayed quiet, heeding Xiao Li’s earlier warning even as her heart raced with overwhelming fear for her mother.

Gu An stepped beside her bed, dropping her hand gently onto Su Xiao’s shoulder. "They’re fighting back up there, Xiao Xiao. Commander Han and Sister Lin won’t let anything happen."

Su Xiao looked up, wiping her eyes with the back of her sleeve, her voice barely above a whisper. "My mommy is hurting the big monster... but the big monster is angry now. I can feel it."

"Your mommy is strong," Gu An said softly, though her own eyes flicked nervously toward the ceiling.

Xiao Li checked his wrist terminal, monitoring the internal security feeds broadcasting from the Command Hub.

Han Ye opened his eyes slowly, pulling his consciousness back from the subterranean shadow network. He let out a long, quiet breath, wiping the sweat from his forehead with the back of his small hand.

He didn’t speak, but he offered Su Xiao a faint, silent nod from across the room.

Up on the upper ramparts, the roaring wall of fire unleashed by Lieutenant Chen and propelled by Han Zheng’s kinetic shockwave began to dissipate into thick, white plumes of steam against the freezing rain and melting slush.

The heat had turned the seventy-meter field into a desolate landscape of black mud and bubbling water. In the center of the clearing, the Alpha was still standing, but its posture was broken.

The outer layer of its armor was charred black and smoking heavily, and the volatile blue energy leaking from its shattered sternum node was flickering erratically, like a dying lantern.

The monster raised its head, its glowing, sunken eyes locking back onto Su Xiao’s mother, who had successfully pushed herself back up from the slush. Her form stood resilient against the wind, her own blue aura stabilizing into a clear, sharp halo as she prepared her final assault.

"Capacitors loaded!" Old Wang reported, snapping the fresh orange-core cartridge into his rifle and resting the heavy barrel back onto the tripod mount. "Core temperature is nominal. Ready to fire on your mark."

Lin Qing adjusted her grip on her weapon, resting her finger lightly against the hair-trigger. Her optical scope’s thermal view highlighted the Alpha’s damaged chest in bright, pulsing red—the exposed processing node was completely unprotected, its internal energy matrix critically unstable.

Han Zheng stood beside her, his sidearm holstered and his hands resting on his rifle’s receiver. He stepped closer to the railing, his gaze analyzing the monster’s off-balance footing in the mud.

"Lieutenant Chen, stand by for secondary suppression if it tries another kinetic burst," Han Zheng commanded crisply, his voice carrying clearly over the wind. "Song Yan, hold the lower blast doors. No one opens the main gates until that core is completely destroyed."

"Copy that, Commander!" Song Yan’s voice crackled back through the comms loop from the loading bay below. "Gate locks are reinforced. Kinetic dampeners are operating at one hundred percent."

"Lin Qing, Old Wang, take the shot the moment she closes the distance," Han Zheng ordered, his eyes tracking Su Xiao’s mother as she took her first explosive step forward across the steaming slush field. "Target that central core node and finish it."

Lin Qing locked her crosshairs directly onto the crackling blue processing node behind the Apex’s shattered sternum, her breathing slowing to a deep, measured rhythm. "Target locked. Waiting for contact."
