Chapter 153: Returning to the Core
The heavy, snow-studded treads of the modified SUV crunched down over the thick ice pack as the small convoy navigated the final curve of the mountain pass.
Ahead stood the colossal blast gates of the research center. Towering reinforced concrete walls stretched outward, embedded deep into the granite face of the surrounding gorge. High-frequency thermal barriers flickered along the upper parapets, humming with a low, rhythmic vibration that drove back the creeping frost.
Inside the heated, leather-scented cabin of the SUV, the atmospheric noise was reduced to a soft mechanical hum. Han Zheng reached up with his gloved hand, switching the central communications array from localized squad frequencies to the secure long-range base band.
"Gate Command, this is Commander Han," Han Zheng spoke into the transmitter, his voice deep, gravelly, and carrying the unshakeable weight of authority. "We are approaching the outer perimeter with Convoy Wave One. We have civilians, injured non-combatants from the secondary military depot in Sector 4, and heavy cargo in tow. Initiate entry protocols and open the primary blast gates."
A brief crackle of atmospheric static hissed through the overhead speakers before the channel clicked open, crisp and clear.
"Commander! Copy that! We are clearing the primary transit bay right now," Captain Lu Feng’s voice responded instantly over the line. There was a subtle, almost uncharacteristic pause on the receiver before he added, a slight edge of nervous tension bleeding through his usually rigid military tone. "...Commander, is Lin Qing with you? Is she... is she safe?"
Han Zheng glanced subtly to his right. Lin Qing sat in the passenger seat, her dark eyes reflecting the amber glow of the console displays, her posture relaxed yet perfectly balanced for immediate action.
"She’s with me," Han Zheng replied smoothly into the mic, his eyes softening for a fraction of a second as he looked at her. "She’s safe."
A heavy, audible sigh of pure relief passed through the static from Lu Feng’s end of the comms line. "Understood, sir! Lowering defense grid and unsealing the primary blast doors now!"
High above on the battlements, heavy hydraulic locks disengaged with a series of concussive, metallic thuds. The massive doors groaned loudly, their heavy gears grinding against the frost buildup as they slowly parted inward. The SUV led the line of armored transports and Song Yan’s field-patched flatbed truck into the subterranean expanse of the research center’s transit hub.
As they crossed the threshold, geothermal heating vents embedded directly into the concrete deck hissed softly, melting the caked snow off the heavy tires almost instantly and filling the air with the smell of warm pavement and ozone.
The moment the SUV came to a complete stop in the central staging bay, the heavy pneumatic locks on the vehicle doors hissed open.
Waiting right near the inner environmental barrier was Lu Feng alongside Dr. Zhou. Lu Feng stood straight, his hands clasped behind his back, his sharp eyes instantly scanning the SUV’s windows until they landed on Lin Qing. Beside him, Dr. Zhou wore her white lab coat over a slate-grey jumpsuit. The moment the SUV’s passenger door opened, Dr. Zhou didn’t bother waiting for any updates or instructions. She stepped forward immediately, her gaze locked entirely onto Lin Qing.
"Lin Qing," Dr. Zhou said, her voice carrying an unmistakable undertone of deep concern. She pulled a small, silver penlight from her breast pocket and stepped right up to the edge of the open door. "Don’t move. Let me check your pupil response and neurological alignment."
Lin Qing didn’t flinch or pull back. Though her memories of Dr. Zhou were entirely absent, her body instinctively recognized the clinical demeanor. She remained completely still, her breathing steady as Dr. Zhou flicked the narrow beam of light across her dark eyes, carefully evaluating her pupillary dilation, tracking movement, and checking the neat military bandages wrapped tightly beneath her coat collar.
"Physical recovery is remarkably stable," Dr. Zhou noted quietly after a long moment, clicking her penlight off and tucking it away. She looked over at Han Zheng, offering him a subtle, approving nod. "She is doing quite well. The head trauma isn’t showing signs of intracranial swelling."
"Her physical state was never my main concern," Han Zheng murmured quietly, stepping around the front of the SUV to stand close beside Lin Qing. His hand rested lightly near the small of her back—a protective, grounding presence.
Before Dr. Zhou could respond, the sharp, rhythmic sound of footsteps echoed down the main access corridor leading to the main command center.
A little boy walked out into the bright halogen lights of the loading bay. Flanking him on either side were two children—Gu An, who looked nervous and slightly excited and Su Xiao, who clutched the hem of the older girl’s vest with her tiny fingers.
Lin Qing’s attention was drawn instantly to the lead boy: Han Ye.
He moved with a quiet precision that felt unnervingly mature for a child his age. His face was cold, impassive, and detached from the chaotic activity around the unloading transports. Yet, the moment his dark, intense eyes landed on Lin Qing standing along with Han Zheng, a small shift occurred in his posture.
The faint, rigid tension in his small shoulders dropped by a fraction of an inch, revealing an underlying sense of profound relief.
He isn’t a normal child, Lin Qing thought instantly. Her sharp mind automatically picked apart his stance, noting the way his feet were weighted for an immediate retreat or assault, and how his eyes scanned her entry point for threats.
Han Zheng stepped forward, his palm coming down to rest securely on the boy’s shoulder. He looked down at Lin Qing, his voice taking on a softer, intimate warmth. "Lin Qing... this is Han Ye. My son."
Lin Qing blinked, a small, subtle wave of surprise washing over her disciplined expression. Her stepson. Han Zheng had already told her about their marriage and her having a stepson before they had left the military depot.
She looked down at the cold, composed boy standing before her. Because her mind was stripped of their shared history, her gaze lacked the familiar warmth. Instead, her eyes carried a faint, subtle aura of unfamiliarity—the clear, analytical gaze of someone observing a person who was technically a stranger.
Han Ye caught that look in an instant.
His eyes narrowed by a fraction of a millimeter. He didn’t speak, but behind his calm, impassive mask, his mind raced with cold clarity.
’She doesn’t recognize me’, Han Ye thought, his internal radar spiking instantly into high alert. ’Her eyes... she’s looking at me the same way she looks at an unknown tactical variable. Her memories are gone.’
A dark, dangerous edge flickered in Han Ye’s mind. If Lin Qing’s memories were compromised, he knew with absolute certainty that Yang Jun would see her amnesia as the ultimate window of opportunity.
Yang Jun would undoubtedly try to manipulate her, test her weaknesses, or finish what he started. He hadn’t gathered irrefutable evidence regarding Yang Jun’s crime yet so he could not take any action immediately either.
Han Ye’s small jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. ’I need to watch her every step. If Yang Jun makes a single wrong move around her while her guard is altered, I’ll slit his throat myself.’
"Brother Han Zheng!" A sharp, high-pitched voice suddenly shattered the tense silence of the loading bay.
Lu Ning came hurrying out from the side administrative corridor. Her hair was tightly braided and though her posture lacked the strict discipline of her older brother, Lu Feng. A bright, genuinely radiant smile lit up her face as she jogged eagerly toward Han Zheng—until her eyes swept past his shoulder and landed squarely on Lin Qing standing right beside him.
In less than a second, Lu Ning’s bright, welcoming expression completely collapsed into a cold, bitter scowl.
The lingering, sharp resentment from her flared right back up to the surface. She stopped dead in her tracks five feet away, her hands clenching into tight fists at her sides, her eyes burning with a mix of intense jealousy and unhidden spite as she glared at Lin Qing.
Lu Ning had thought that she had finally gotten rid of her only obstacle in obtaining Han Zheng’s affection, but the woman who was supposed to be dead was now standing right in front of her.
Lin Qing didn’t flinch under the younger girl’s aggressive glare. Instead, she stood quietly between her protective, imposing husband, her secretive, unnaturally sharp stepson, a watchful doctor holding a clipboard, an infatuated girl glaring daggers at her, and the bustling, loud activity of the convoy unloading behind them.
She had no memories of any of these people—no context for why the girl in front of her seemed to hate her, why Han Ye looked at her like he was the adult, or why Dr. Zhou treated her with such careful gravity and care.
Yet, as she absorbed the chaotic, high-stakes dynamic of the base, a faint, deeply amused curve touched the corner of her lips.
’This base’... Lin Qing thought, her fingers lightly tapping the grip of her holstered sidearm, ’is going to be very interesting.’
