Chapter 53 53: Nothing But Dragon Bones
Shireen was crawling through the dark inside one of the massive dragon skulls when her hand brushed against something warm and solid. She froze.
The others had all gone to different skulls. She was supposed to be alone.
A cold shiver ran down her spine. Ghost.
She screamed and scrambled out into the open.
"AAAAAAAH!"
Her scream cut through the Dragonpit like a blade. Two figures standing in the shadows jerked around.
Varys and Illyrio Mopatis.
The fat man from Pentos, covered in rings and jewels, looked at the terrified girl and immediately drew a curved dagger.
"She saw us. She heard everything. I'll kill her."
Varys's face tightened, but he didn't stop him.
Illyrio moved toward Shireen, blade raised.
Before he could reach her, a whip cracked through the air and wrapped around his wrist. Arianne Martell stepped out of the darkness, eyes blazing.
"You try to kill my sister and you die tonight."
She yanked hard. Illyrio snarled and sliced through the whip with his dagger.
At the same moment, another figure slipped out of the skull behind Shireen.
Arya Stark. Needle already in her hand.
"Arya!" Sansa gasped, running over.
"No time," Arya said. "He's trying to kill us."
Myrcella grabbed two sharp pieces of broken dragon bone and tossed one to Sansa.
"We're ending this. Now."
The four girls attacked together.
Illyrio was faster than he looked. Years ago he had been a mercenary, strong and handsome. The fat merchant body still remembered how to fight. He ducked and weaved, parrying blows, refusing to go down.
From the side, Margaery grabbed two heavy bricks and shoved one into Shireen's hands.
"When I say now, we throw."
Shireen nodded, gripping the brick tight.
Margaery shouted, "Now!"
The girls scattered. Two bricks flew. The first one Illyrio blocked. The second smashed into the side of his face. Blood poured into his eye.
"Finish him!" Myrcella yelled.
Arya moved in, Needle flashing. She remembered Syrio's words.
Water bends. Water cannot be cut.
She let Illyrio's desperate swing pass her, then stepped inside his guard and drove Needle straight into his chest.
The fat man gasped. Blood sprayed across Arya's face and into her mouth.
She stood there, breathing hard, tasting iron.
So this is what it feels like.
Valar Morghulis.
Across the Narrow Sea, in the House of Black and White, Jaqen H'ghar's eyes snapped open. He bowed before the many faces.
"Find the girl," he whispered.
Varys tried to run for the exit. A brick caught him in the back of the leg and he went down hard.
When he looked up, five girls stood over him, weapons pointed at his bald head.
Myrcella stepped forward, dragon bone in her hand like a sword.
"Lord Varys. You were plotting with the Targaryen girl. What should I do with you? Feed you to the Mountain? Hand you to my father? Or let the Seven judge you?"
Margaery spoke up quickly. "Keep him, Princess. He's the Master of Whisperers. His little birds could be very useful to you."
Shireen shook her head. "He was going to betray us for Daenerys. He won't stay loyal."
Arianne pulled a small vial from her belt. "This is from the Faceless Men. Modified. It won't kill him… but if he doesn't take the antidote every month, his body will rot from the inside."
Myrcella looked down at Varys for a long moment.
Then she nodded.
"Feed it to him."
Varys swallowed the poison without a word. His fate was sealed.
Once it was done, Sansa suddenly realized someone was missing.
"Arya?"
She looked around the Dragonpit. Nothing.
"Arya!"
No answer.
Myrcella frowned. "Why was your sister even here?"
"I don't know," Sansa said quietly. "She ran away days ago. Father's men couldn't find her."
She looked at the broken dragon bones scattered across the floor.
"There's nothing here," she whispered. "Nothing but dragon bones."
