Mate Collecting System: The Beast Kings Are Obsessed With Me

Chapter 84: The Last Stand at the Marsh

Selka was tottering. Her vision swam in a sickening haze of heat waves and dust.

Her body had nothing left to give—exhausted from the grueling sprint through the jungle, the endless evading and skirmishing with the Red Claw scouts, and now, the torturous combination of the scorching sun and deep dehydration.

With every stride, a sudden, terrifying weakness buckled her knees. The creepy hyenas kept pace effortlessly, flanking her on all sides, maintaining just enough distance to keep her on the move.

They whistled, clapped, and made those skin-crawling, frantic yelps, treating her desperate struggle for survival like a hilarious midday show.

Oh... I would have vastly preferred a swift, violent death roll from the crocodiles over this humiliating, harassing death by these absolute creeps, she thought, her teeth grinding as a surge of pure disgust cut through her panic.

If I am going to die today, let me die by the water.

With that final, stubborn thought, she forced her heavy legs to veer back toward the marshland, aiming for the shoreline.

The hyenas trailed her, intentionally giving her a cruel, fake hope of escape. Every few paces, one of the bolder beastmen would sprint forward, violently bumping his shoulder into her back to throw her off balance.

Selka growled, a raw, desperate sound, spinning around to slash her sharp claws at their mocking, laughing faces.

But they simply danced backward out of her reach, cackling wildly, while another one immediately harassed her from behind the moment her back was turned.

She kept pushing, forcing her feet forward, but today, the evolutionary rules of the wild had completely inverted. The wolves—built for the endless chase, built to run down and tire out their prey—had become the hunted.

Finally, her legs simply gave out.

She didn’t even trip on a root or a stone; her muscles just completely shut down, turning into jelly. Selka crashed hard onto her knees, the impact jarring her spine.

Yet, her stubborn Alpha spirit refused to let her sit still. Using her raw fingernails, she began to claw at the dirt, desperately dragging her body forward to crawl toward the marsh, which was now only a few meters away.

"HAA-ha-ha-ha! Grrr... Aaaah-ooo!"

The pack of hyenas erupted into a triumphant, chaotic chorus of laughing and mocking yelps. Seeing her completely pinned to the ground, they dropped the chase and began to close the circle, tightening around her like a noose.

Selka kept dragging her bleeding, stinging human form through the dust, her breath coming in ragged, uneven gasps.

Suddenly, a heavy boot slammed into her wrist, kicking her hand out from under her. Without support, Selka’s chin slammed violently against the hard, baked earth.

A sharp, blinding pain shot straight through her skull. Warm blood instantly began to ooze from her split chin, mixing with the dust on her face.

Her parched, swollen tongue scraped against her teeth as she let out one last, guttural growl. "Stay... away from me!" she hissed, though her voice lacked its usual booming power.

Her eyelids grew impossibly heavy. Her vision began to white out, bleaching the surrounding cackling faces into blurred shadows. The mocking laughter and loud, rhythmic hooting began to echo and distort inside her head, sounding farther and farther away.

Then came the hands. Dozens of rough, aggressive touches, sharp claws scratching and tearing at her skin, ripping her loincloth, and marking her flesh.

Huh... so this is how it ends for me, she thought, a profound numbness settling over her mind.

Her eyes finally slipped fully closed. Her ears stopped processing the manic laughter. Her body stopped feeling the burning scratches and the heavy dust. The world faded into total, silent black.

SPLASH!!!

A sudden, violent burst of freezing water hit Selka’s face like a localized waterfall, shocking her nerve endings and forcefully jolting her conscious mind back into reality. Her eyes snapped open, and she let out a desperate, hacking cough.

"Huhhh... huhh...!"

Gasping for air, she wiped the muddy water from her eyes and looked up. Hovering directly over her face was a massive, prehensile gray trunk, its tip sniffing the wet air around her.

Selka gasped, scrambling backward on her elbows as she realized she was sitting directly in the center of a dense, moving fortress of absolute giants.

A thunderous, deafening "PRRRAAAAHHHH!" ripped across the open plains, shaking the very fillings in her teeth.

One colossal, battle-scarred elephant charged past her position, its massive ears spread wide like sails, its trunk raised high into the air as it stamped its massive feet into the dirt.

More massive trumpets answered from the surrounding brush as the rest of the herd moved in. The entire plain seemed to tremble beneath the rhythmic, pounding weight of their footsteps.

The swarming hyenas instantly lost their unhinged bravado. They backed away in a frantic scramble, yelping and barking in genuine terror as the furious giants aggressively rushed forward, completely cutting off the perimeter to protect the helpless, bleeding wolf on the ground.

Selka stared up at them in a daze, then lowered her head to look at her own body.

She was a complete mess—bleeding heavily from dozens of shallow scratches, bruises, and small bites. As her adrenaline began to cool, the throbbing pain rushed back into her nervous system, making her wince.

Looking back up, she watched the majestic aura of the herd. They didn’t move with the panicked speed of the wolves or the chaotic energy of the hyenas.

They walked with a slow, heavy, completely fearless dominance—the true, undisputed rulers of the plains. Within moments, the rowdy hyena clan was completely pushed back, scattered into the far edges of the golden grass by the sheer presence of the massive males.

Selka let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, the tension finally leaving her shoulders.

Using the muddy ground beneath her for leverage, she slowly, painfully forced herself back up onto her two legs. She found herself completely safe inside an inner sanctuary.

The massive adult females had formed a protective, impenetrable outer ring, keeping the danger out. Inside the circle, a few curious, large-eyed calves were stepping closer to her. Their small trunks reached out, gently touching her wet cheeks, sniffing her hair and the metallic scent of her blood with innocent curiosity.

While the adult males continued to lurk on the outskirts, keeping their massive tusks pointed toward the tall grass to ensure the creeps wouldn’t return.

Standing silently among the curious calves, Selka slowly lifted her silver eyes, searching for the one presence powerful enough to command such a colossal herd—the leader of the almighty Elephant Clan.
