If you can beat just one of us instructors—and that includes our accompanying driver—I will grant you permission to end your military training early!" The instructor’s words sent the crowd into an uproar.
"End military training early?"
"Doesn’t that mean a fifteen-day vacation?!"
"A fifteen-day vacation... that would be insanely good!"
"You’re making this freak sound way too nice. There’s a catch to finishing training early!"
"Oh, right. Seraphina Sterling has to fight one of these instructors! She only gets that fifteen-day vacation if she wins!"
"What is that freak thinking? This is an impossible mission! Seraphina Sterling may be smart, but she’s still a girl. He wants her to fight a male soldier? How? Is she going to scratch him with her nails?"
"Exactly! Our instructor is a total freak, the kind who gets his kicks from tormenting girls! There’s no way she can end her training early. It’s impossible!"
The crowd’s excitement quickly fizzled out. They all started praying. ’Seraphina Sterling, please, whatever you do, don’t agree to it! That freak is definitely up to no good!’
"I can pick anyone?" Seraphina Sterling asked, looking at the instructor. ’She had endured for fifteen days, and now, her chance had finally come!’
"That’s right!"
"And what if I happen to injure one of the instructors?" The moment Seraphina Sterling spoke, the atmosphere shifted. ’Injure an instructor? Impossible! Not with her slight build!’
"Then it’ll be on them for being incompetent! I won’t punish you for it. Of course, the same rule applies to you. If you get hurt, I won’t hold them responsible. But I should warn you. Even though these instructors are just new recruits fresh out of training, the probability of you injuring them is still extremely low!" Just as the head instructor finished, thirty-six other instructors jogged over, having heard his every word loud and clear.

"This is the most outstanding cadet in our class! In a moment, she will pick one of you as her opponent. If she wins, this will be her last day of training, and this sparring match will be her final test! On the other hand, if one of you wins, I can grant the victor a chance to try out for Blade’s Edge!" As soon as the instructor finished speaking, Seraphina Sterling noticed a sharp change in the other instructors’ eyes. Every single one of them was now burning with a bloodthirsty glint and a fierce desire to fight.
Seraphina Sterling had no idea what "Blade’s Edge" was, and neither did any of the other students. But the instructors knew perfectly well. Blade’s Edge—it was the place every soldier yearned to be. It was the highest, unspoken honor a soldier could achieve. Only the most elite were accepted. Soldiers like them, fresh out of basic training, weren’t even qualified to apply. They never imagined they would be given a chance to try out! This was an opportunity of a lifetime!
Every instructor’s eyes blazed with feverish intensity. Who among them would get this opportunity now depended entirely on Seraphina Sterling’s choice.
