Chapter 319: This Short Temper of Mine (7)
Martin Quinn’s expression instantly darkened, and everyone else’s face grew grim. If this young master got angry, it would be no laughing matter. The Sterling Group’s current precarious situation, like walking on thin ice, said it all. Any wealthy family was insignificant before a truly elite one.
"Mr. Quinn, that’s not what I meant, I meant..." Shannon Gable’s expression was even more wretched than when she’d been injured moments ago. She had no idea those words would infuriate him. ’She had only spoken the truth, without a shred of exaggeration. So why was he displeased?’
"This doesn’t concern you. Your feud with Seraphina Sterling is your own business. Don’t drag the Quinn Family into it!" Martin Quinn didn’t even spare her a glance. In his eyes, Shannon Gable was a nobody, completely unworthy of his time and energy.
"I’ve already had someone send Faye Sterling back to the Sterling residence. You’ll see her tonight when you get home." Martin Quinn’s words were clearly directed at Seraphina Sterling, and everyone present understood.
"Then on behalf of my grandfather, I thank you, Mr. Quinn, for your leniency." Seraphina Sterling offered a gentle smile. In the face of Martin Quinn’s cold expression, only she and Ethan Thompson, out of everyone present, could maintain such a relaxed demeanor.
’Faye Sterling was just a typical, sheltered girl from a wealthy family. She had never been exposed to the dark side of their world. Martin Quinn was a man who walked the line between righteous and wicked. Faye had been in his clutches for a week, and that week must have felt longer than a year to her. In many cases, physical torment is nothing compared to mental anguish. And as for me, I’ll take breaking someone’s spirit over their body any day.’
"You haven’t even seen her yet. How do you know I was lenient? Let me be clear: I, Martin Quinn, never go easy on anyone who dares to use me. Not even if it’s a woman!" Martin Quinn’s expression darkened further. His words carried a double meaning, and the implication was clear to anyone paying attention.
Seraphina Sterling glanced at Shannon Gable, who was now trembling uncontrollably. ’To issue a warning with such subtlety, such artistry... only Martin Quinn could pull that off. And seeing as the warning was directed at Shannon Gable, I rather approve.’ "You left her alive and sent her back to the Sterling residence. How is that not being lenient?"
"HAHAHAHA! Good! Excellent!" Martin Quinn seemed momentarily stunned by Seraphina Sterling’s words, then burst out laughing. ’Looks like this Seraphina Sterling is far more interesting than I imagined! And far more ruthless, too!’
Grim-faced one moment, roaring with laughter the next—what on earth did Mr. Quinn mean? The onlookers were thoroughly confused. What sort of cryptic game were Seraphina Sterling and Mr. Quinn playing?
"I hope you’re in such a good mood every day from now on, Mr. Quinn!" ’Especially when you run into me,’ Seraphina added silently in her mind.
"If you’re always this impressive every time we meet, I’m sure I’ll be in an excellent mood." Martin Quinn flashed Seraphina Sterling a brilliant, unreserved smile, then turned and left.
Seraphina Sterling mentally cursed Martin Quinn’s entire family tree. ’I have to become more powerful,’ she resolved. ’Powerful enough to say no to him. A few more days like this, and I’ll be a goner for sure!’
The crowd watched in astonishment as Martin Quinn simply left. What on earth had he come here for? He hadn’t stayed long. All he did was watch a ridiculous horse race, say a few ambiguous things, throw in a warning for Shannon Gable, and then just... leave?
So what exactly was the relationship between Mr. Quinn and Seraphina Sterling? They couldn’t be called close; the two hadn’t been in close physical proximity from start to finish. Moreover, Mr. Quinn had forced her to compete against Shannon Gable, even though Seraphina clearly couldn’t ride. And yet, you couldn’t say their relationship was bad, either. He had spoken more to Seraphina than to anyone else, and his words carried an undeniable sense of familiarity.
