A Warm Marriage After Rebirth

Chapter 315: This Bad Temper of Mine (Part 3)

No one had expected the reality of the situation to be so shocking! Watching Shannon Gable finish a lap and then overtake Seraphina Sterling again, the crowd finally had a startling realization: Miss Sterling didn’t know how to ride a horse at all!

The outcome of the race was a foregone conclusion; there was no suspense whatsoever. The crowd couldn’t help but look at Wyatt Gallagher. Just moments ago, his attitude had been so resolute, defending Miss Sterling without a care for who he offended. Now that the situation had turned out like this, what would he choose to do?

A smile played on Wyatt Gallagher’s lips, his gentle eyes practically overflowing with tenderness. He watched Seraphina Sterling, who was slowly, leisurely riding her horse. Dressed in a black riding habit atop her chestnut mount, she ambled forward at an unhurried pace, looking more like she was on a relaxing vacation, just walking her horse, than a competitor in a tense race.

He didn’t ask for her to beat Shannon Gable; he only wanted her to be safe. ’Though I don’t get what the difference is between what she’s doing now and just forfeiting,’ Wyatt thought, his mind filling with a jumble of chaotic ideas. ’We’re only five years apart. Is that really enough for a generation gap?’

If Seraphina Sterling knew what he was thinking right then, she would have certainly told him that there was a huge difference. If she hadn’t even gotten on the racecourse, her legs would have been in danger. This way, even though she was still losing, at least her legs were safe.

After what felt like an eternity of hardship, Seraphina Sterling finally completed one lap. Wyatt Gallagher waved at her and smiled gently. "Slow down, be careful!"

Slow down?

He wants her to slow down from *this* speed?

The crowd felt a cold sweat break out. ’Wyatt Gallagher, is there something wrong with your eyes?! How can she go any slower? She’s already incredibly slow! Any slower and the chestnut horse itself would probably start crying! You should spare a thought for this champion horse! How did it end up with a master like you?’ Everyone couldn’t help but feel sorry for the poor chestnut horse beneath Seraphina Sterling.

"Don’t worry, my skills aren’t half-bad! At the very least, getting through these ten laps won’t be a problem!" Having grown more familiar with the chestnut horse, Seraphina Sterling became bolder. She switched from holding the reins with two hands to just one, waving the other at Wyatt Gallagher in response.

They thought nothing could go wrong, but the two of them had forgotten they weren’t alone on the racecourse. There was still another, much more formidable, competitor out there.

Watching the two of them interact as if no one else existed, Shannon Gable’s heart was suddenly swamped by a thick wave of jealousy. It was obvious that neither Seraphina Sterling nor Wyatt Gallagher was taking this race seriously. ’I’m the one who’s been forcing the issue,’ she thought. ’They’re over there, all lovey-dovey and sweet, while I’m here, desperately racing to win this competition, to win one single chance for myself!’

’Look at them, and then look at me. My efforts are a complete joke! Is Seraphina Sterling so certain that even if she loses the race, her relationship with Wyatt Gallagher won’t change? Does she look down on my challenge that much?’

Jealousy and rage made Shannon Gable lose all reason. As she passed Seraphina Sterling, she viciously whipped Seraphina’s chestnut horse! The horse, which had been maintaining a steady, grass-grazing pace, suddenly reared up on its front legs. With a loud neigh, it shot forward, breaking into a wild gallop!

"Shannon—what are you doing?" Wyatt Gallagher, who had been the picture of gentleness just a moment before, saw his expression change in an instant as he rushed to intervene.

Seeing Wyatt Gallagher about to charge onto the racecourse, Jay Gable immediately blocked his path. "What do you think you’re doing? We agreed this is a competition. Outsiders can’t interfere! As scions of prominent families, if she can’t even handle something as simple as riding a horse, she’ll be a disgrace to all of us! You will stand right here and watch!"
