Chapter 204: Visitors from the Jennings Family (5)
It was as if Zoe Jennings was deaf, completely failing to notice the disdain and disgust in Elias Jennings’s tone. A smile bloomed on her face, secretly thrilled at the prospect of latching onto the business-savvy Jennings Family!
Leo Jennings’s expression turned utterly foul. He shot a haughty glance at the visibly excited Zoe Jennings. "I know exactly what you’re thinking! Are you trying to shamelessly trail after me and Quinn, hoping the clueless students will think you’re also part of our Jennings Family, that you’re rich too?"
Thick disgust was written all over Leo’s face. "Let me tell you, stop your daydreaming and wishful thinking! You want to latch onto our Jennings Family? Ride our coattails? You’re not worthy!"
The living room grew even quieter. This was indeed the plan of Ivy Cheney and her daughter, but having it exposed so publicly made their expressions turn exceedingly ugly. They had thought Elias Jennings would step in to stop Leo’s mockery, but he just kept sipping his tea with narrowed eyes, not saying a word!
This was a tacit admission that he also disapproved of the mother and daughter’s overly desperate behavior. Truly, no one could be so adept at sucking up except for the Cheney mother and daughter!
"Brother, watch what you’re saying." The atmosphere grew awkward. Quinn shot a glance at Leo. "These people are so desperate and shameless, and you’re still trying to spare them some dignity? If it were me, I wouldn’t even bother to look at them. There are so many beggars on the street. If we had to politely explain ourselves and draw a line with every single person who came begging for food, we’d have died long ago—from exhaustion!"
One might have assumed that this seemingly quiet girl would have a soft and serene personality. But no one expected that the exceedingly quiet Quinn Jennings was a total little chili pepper. If Leo’s attitude toward Ivy Cheney and Zoe Jennings was disgust and disdain, then Quinn’s was pure mockery and contempt!
"How can you speak to your elders like that?" Having her intentions laid bare for all to see, especially in front of Seraphina Sterling and Kimberly Jennings, Ivy Cheney flew into a rage out of sheer humiliation. Forgetting her place, she once again adopted the lecturing tone of a dean disciplining a student!
"My sister is just speaking the truth! You did the deed, so why are you afraid of people talking about it? Weren’t you trying to suck up to our family? Weren’t you trying to latch onto our family? I’ve seen plenty of people like you!"
The moment Leo heard Ivy Cheney lecturing his sister, his anger surged. His previous haughty expression was replaced by a grim one. His tone grew even more arrogant and insolent, and the ridicule in his eyes became more pronounced, as if he were looking at a beggar.
Ivy Cheney’s face flushed red, and she was so choked with anger she couldn’t utter a single word. She, who had always felt herself superior, couldn’t bear being spoken to like this by a junior.
Zoe Jennings finally snapped. "Isn’t your dad just a contractor? What do you have to be so arrogant about? Don’t you just haul cement and bend rebar on construction sites? My mom, at least, is an educator, and my dad is a teacher too. Their students are all over the country! And you? In the end, you just reek of money!"
"Reek of money?" Quinn rolled her eyes at Zoe. "And who was it just now, clinging to my brother for dear life?"
Zoe Jennings was never good with words. Although Quinn’s retort made her furious, she couldn’t come up with a single thing to say back!
Zachary Jennings frowned as he watched the scene unfold, his own expression sour. "Mr. Jennings, aren’t you going to do something about them? So arrogant and conceited at such a young age—that’s not a good sign!"
But Elias Jennings’s expression didn’t change. "Leo and Quinn are just telling the truth. Their tone might be a bit arrogant, but they’ve earned the right to be. I’m their father! I may just be a contractor, but on many matters, what this contractor says, goes!"
Zachary Jennings’s expression soured even more. Now he saw it clearly: the two children had learned their arrogance directly from their father!
"Seraphina Sterling! Why are you so quiet all of a sudden? My dad is usually so good to you! Why aren’t you sticking up for him now?" Zoe Jennings turned all her anger on Seraphina Sterling.
