Alpha's Ruin: He Betrayed Me, I'll Make Him Kneel

Chapter 75: I Don’t Want to Leave

Eli tugged at Rhea’s sleeve, his wide brown eyes searching her face. "Mama?" his voice trembled. "Do we really have to leave? I like it here. I want to stay."

Inside Rhea’s skull, River let out a furious snarl. "These spineless cowards! How dare they turn a mother and pup out into the cold?"

Rhea felt her heart split right down the middle, the sharp ache radiating into her chest. She couldn’t bring herself to speak, so she dropped to her knees and pulled Eli into a tight hug.

River nuzzled the boy’s spirit in their shared mind, wrapping her spectral warmth around the heartbroken pup.

Adam stepped forward, his massive frame towering over the small circle of leaders. His dark brows pulled into a dangerous scowl, and his Alpha aura flared, thick, suffocating, and heavy with the scent of burning cedar and raw anger.

"How can you stand there and make such a demand?" Adam’s voice rolled across the cobblestones like thunder.

"Tell them!" River snapped in Rhea’s head. "Make them choke on their fear!"

The head elder took a cautious step back, his eyes darting to the floor, unable to meet Adam’s amber glare. "This is the last thing we wished for, Alpha," he pleaded, his voice trembling under the weight of Adam’s command. "But we have no choice. Our first duty is to guard this sanctuary."

"Nonsense," Adam growled, his jaw setting like granite. He swept his gaze over the council members one by one. Not a single elder dared to raise their head. "Tell me. Who voted to throw a mother and her pup to the wolves?"

The elders bowed their heads lower, retreating into the shadow of their robes. Silence hung heavy in the mountain air.

Rhea stood up slowly, her chest heaving as she smoothed her hands down her tunic. "Calm down, Adam," she said, her tone flat despite the tremor in her hands. "They are right. They have to protect the sanctuary."

Adam turned to her, his scowl deepening. "They cannot simply throw you out," he shot back, his knuckles white as his hands clenched into fists at his sides. He whirled back to the elders. "I expected honor from this council. You would cast a mother and her child into the woods after a single siege?"

The senior elder braved a glance upward, swallowing hard. "You must understand, Alpha Thorne. Look around this yard. We have dozens of orphaned pups and nursing mothers. Their families entrusted them to these walls just as you did with Eli."

Adam’s gaze remained lethal, though the line of his shoulders softened a fraction.

"We cannot put every soul here in danger just to keep two refugees inside the gates," another elder added softly. "You saw the banners outside. The Twin Tigers. Blackfang rogues. This is a house of peace. We will not let it become an Alpha battleground."

The tension in Adam’s shoulders loosened a fraction, though his eyes burned with simmering heat. In Rhea’s mind, River’s vicious growl subsided into a low, dissatisfied rumble.

"If it eases your burden," the head elder offered, chancing a look at Rhea, "the boy may remain here. We will care for—"

"Not happening!" Rhea snapped. River’s deep wolf-growl bled straight into her voice, vibrating through her vocal cords as her eyes flashed silver. "That is completely out of the question. We leave together."

Adam’s head snapped to her, his brows pinching in disbelief. "Rhea, wait—"

Before he could finish, Rhea took Eli’s small hand and turned toward the council. "You are right," she said, tilting her chin high even as her throat burned with unshed tears. "Our presence brings war to your doorstep. I will not be the reason another child loses their home."

"Rhea, listen to me—" Adam reached for her, his voice rough.

She didn’t give him the chance. Clasping Eli’s hand tight, she turned her back on the council and marched toward the inner archway.

She had barely taken two steps when Eli resisted, pulling back against her grip. Tears brimmed in his eyes, spilling over his red cheeks as he looked up at her.

"Mama! Please!" he sobbed, his small voice echoing off the stone walls. "I don’t want to leave my friends!"

Rhea’s heart shattered into pieces. She kept her face pointed straight ahead, staring blind at the stone archway while hot tears burned behind her eyelids. The last thing she needed was for her son, or those standing behind her, to see her break.

Behind them, heavy boots crunched against the gravel as Adam closed the distance. "Rhea—" He cut himself off when she refused to slow down, his tone dropping into a desperate plea. "Wait! Please!"

Eli’s cries grew harder, his small fingers trembling in her grip. Rhea tried to force her feet forward, but her boots felt like lead. Inside her head, River threw back her muzzle and howled at the boy’s grief, the shared bond magnifying the pain until Rhea couldn’t breathe.

Rhea stopped. She swallowed hard, wiping a stray tear from her cheek before it could fall. Dropping to her knees, she took Eli by his shoulders, struggling to keep her shaking voice steady.

"Listen to me, sweetheart," she whispered, her hands brushing the hair from his forehead. "Taking you from your friends is the last thing I want to do. But we have to go. It’s the only way to keep everyone safe."

Eli shook his head violently, fresh tears washing over his bruised neck. "I don’t want to go," he wept, pulling his small hands to his chest.

"Please, Eli. I promise—" Rhea choked on her words, turning her head as the tears finally spilled down her cheeks. The weight of her failure pressed heavy on her ribs. She wanted to grant him the simple, peaceful life he deserved, but the world kept tearing it from her fingers.

A warm, heavy hand settled gently onto Rhea’s shoulder. She didn’t look up, but the heat of Adam’s palm seeped through her tunic, grounded and steady against her trembling frame. She let go of Eli’s hands and stepped back slightly.

Adam dropped to one knee in front of the small boy. His large, calloused thumb reached out, gently wiping the moisture from Eli’s cheeks. The scent of dark pine and rain enveloped them both, thick and comforting.

"Everything is going to be alright, Eli," Adam said, his voice dropping into a quiet rumble that seemed to vibrate straight into the dirt beneath them. "Do you trust me?"

Eli sniffled, looking into Adam’s amber eyes, and gave a small nod.

"Your mother wants me to tell you that she will make sure you see your friends again," Adam said smoothly, his eyes crinkling at the corners with a warm smile. "And on the way, you are going to meet new friends. Friends with secret hiding spots and real iron training swords. Wolves even cooler than the ones here."

Eli’s breath hitched, a tiny spark of curiosity breaking through his tears. "Really?"

Adam nodded, his thumb catching another tear at the boy’s jawline.

Rhea watched them, her hand pressed against her chest as a strange mix of relief and intense gratitude bloomed in her chest. Eli adored him. In this cruel world, Eli had found someone he trusted completely.

Eli let out a small, wet chuckle through his sniffling. "I’m still gonna miss them."

Adam gathered the boy into his arms, lifting him easily against his chest. "And that is fine, little warrior," he murmured into Eli’s hair. "Missing them just means they were good packmates. But you will see them again. Before we head out, we will walk to every room so you can say a proper goodbye. And whenever you want to visit, I will bring you back myself."

Eli’s eyes went wide. "Really?"

Adam gave a firm nod, and Eli threw his small arms around the Alpha’s thick neck, burying his face in Adam’s collarbone.

Over the boy’s shoulder, Adam’s amber eyes found Rhea’s. He held her gaze, silent and intense, offering no boast, no victory, just an unyielding promise of safety.

Rhea didn’t look away this time. Deep inside her chest, beneath the fear and the lingering distrust, a quiet warmth took root. For the first time since leaving Ironfang, she allowed herself to believe she might not be carrying the weight alone.

Adam set Eli gently back down on his feet. The boy immediately trotted over to Rhea, tugging hard on the hem of her tunic.

"Mama," Eli asked, looking up at her with hopeful eyes. "Are we going with Uncle Adam?"

Adam looked at Rhea, his eyes earnest.
