Chapter 43: Iron Fist Gang
Iron Fist Gang
The Western Desolation was a land of whispers.
Information traveled through the desert like wind through dry grass—fast, unpredictable, and impossible to contain. The Ashen Phoenix had been active for months now, their raids growing bolder, their explorations more ambitious. And with each success, their reputation grew.
Shen Chen sat in his tent, the System's interface glowing before him.

"We're almost there," he murmured. "Just two more members, and we'll unlock the first perks."
Mei entered the tent, her expression serious. "Chen, we have a problem."
He looked up, his eyes sharpening. "What kind of problem?"
"A messenger arrived from the Iron Fist Gang. They want to meet. Their leader, a man named Goran, has been watching us. He wants to talk about territory."
Shen Chen's jaw tightened. The Iron Fist Gang was one of the larger forces in the Western Desolation, with over fifty members. They controlled the northern trade routes, their influence stretching across the region.
"Did he say what he wants?"
"Just a meeting. Neutral ground. Tomorrow at dawn."
Shen Chen was silent for a long moment. Then he nodded slowly.
"I'll go. Mei, you'll come with me. Yue will hold the camp."
--
The meeting took place at a rocky outcropping on the edge of the Iron Fist's territory.
Shen Chen arrived with Mei at his side, his hand resting on his blade. The Iron Fist gang members were already there—a dozen rough men and women, their leader a massive man with arms like tree trunks and eyes like flint.
Goran studied Shen Chen, his expression unreadable. "You're the one they call the Phoenix. I've heard about you. You've been making waves."
Shen Chen inclined his head. "And you're Goran of the Iron Fist. I've heard about you too. You control the northern routes."
Goran grunted. "I do. And I don't like competition. Your people have been raiding convoys that I consider mine."
Shen Chen's eyes narrowed. "The convoys we hit were unclaimed. We took what was available."
"Available?" Goran laughed, a harsh, grating sound. "Everything in the Desolation is claimed, boy. You just haven't learned the rules yet."
Shen Chen's hand tightened on his blade. "Then teach me the rules."
Goran's eyes flickered with something that might have been respect. "You've got spine, I'll give you that. Most people would have backed down by now."
"I'm not most people."
Goran was silent for a long moment. Then he nodded slowly.
"Fine. Here's the deal. You stay out of the northern routes, and I'll stay out of the south. We don't cross paths, we don't interfere with each other's operations. Deal?"
Shen Chen considered the offer. The northern routes were rich, but the south had its own opportunities—ancient ruins, untapped resources, and fewer rivals.
"Deal," he said. "But I want something in return."
Goran's eyes narrowed. "What?"
"Information. The Desolation is changing, and I need to know what's coming."
Goran studied him for a long moment. Then he nodded slowly.
"Fair enough. I'll send word when something happens."
The meeting ended, and Shen Chen walked away with a tentative ally.
---
Weeks passed, and the Ashen Phoenix continued to grow.
The alliance with the Iron Fist Gang opened doors. Other forces in the Desolation took notice—some approached with offers of cooperation, others with threats of hostility.
One such force was the Serpent's Shadow, a small but cunning group that specialized in smuggling and information trading. Their leader was a woman named Mira, whose eyes held secrets and whose smile was never quite trustworthy.
"You're the Phoenix," Mira said, her voice smooth as silk. "I've heard a lot about you."
Shen Chen studied her carefully. "I've heard about you too. You control the underground trade routes."
Mira smiled, a thin, knowing expression. "I do. And I'm looking for partners. People who can move goods without asking too many questions."
"What kind of goods?"
"Ancient artifacts. Forbidden techniques. Things that the empire would prefer to keep hidden."
Shen Chen felt a flicker of interest. "That sounds dangerous."
"Everything in the Desolation is dangerous," Mira said. "The question is whether you're willing to take the risk."
Shen Chen was silent for a long moment. Then he nodded slowly.
"I'm interested. But I have conditions."
"Name them."
"First, I want to know exactly what I'm moving. No secrets, no lies. Second, I want a cut of the profits—thirty percent. And third, if things go wrong, you're on your own."
Mira's smile widened. "Reasonable conditions. I accept."
