Boundless Legacy

Chapter 38: Stranger Returns

STRANGER RETURNS

The stranger appeared three weeks later.

He emerged from the desert as silently as he had before, his dark robes billowing in the wind. His face was hidden beneath his hood, his presence calm and unhurried.

"You have what I seek," he said, his voice smooth. "The chest."

Shen Chen stepped forward, his hand on his blade. "I have it. But before I give it to you, I have questions."

The stranger inclined his head. "Ask."

"What's in the chest? Why is it so important?"

The stranger was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice low and careful.

"The chest contains a soul anchor—an ancient artifact that can bind and control remnant spirits. I have been searching for it for centuries."

Shen Chen's eyes narrowed. "Remnant spirits? The ghosts of the ancient war?"

"Precisely," the stranger said. "The Western Desolation is filled with them—the souls of cultivators who died in the war between the realms. They are powerful, but they are also restless, angry. With the soul anchor, I can control them. Command them. Use them to rebuild what was lost."

Shen Chen studied him, a flicker of suspicion stirring in his chest. "Rebuild what?"

The stranger was silent for a moment. Then he spoke, his voice filled with something that might have been longing.

"My sect. The Crimson Dawn Sect. We were destroyed during the war, our members scattered, our legacy forgotten. I am the last of my kind, and I have been searching for a way to restore my sect to its former glory."

Shen Chen felt a chill run down his spine. Crimson Dawn Sect. I've heard that name before.

He searched his memory, the fragments of knowledge he had gathered over the years. And then it came to him—whispers in the Black Market, tales of a sect that had been banned from the Azure Cloud Empire for practicing forbidden arts.

The Crimson Dawn Sect. An evil cultivation sect. They were known for controlling the dead, for binding souls to their will.

Shen Chen's hand tightened on his blade. "The Crimson Dawn Sect," he said, his voice cold. "The evil cultivation sect that was banned from the empire. You're one of them."

The stranger's eyes flickered, a hint of surprise crossing his face. Then he laughed, a cold, bitter sound.

"You've done your research, young one. Yes, I am a member of the Crimson Dawn Sect. But we were not evil—we were misunderstood. We sought to understand the nature of the soul, to harness its power for the betterment of all. The empire feared us, so they destroyed us."

Shen Chen shook his head. "You control the dead. You bind souls to your will. That's not understanding—that's enslavement."

The stranger's expression hardened. "You know nothing of what I've been through. Nothing of what I've lost. The soul anchor is my only hope of restoring my sect, of bringing back what was taken from me."

---

Shen Chen's refusal hung in the air like a challenge.

The stranger studied him for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Then he laughed—a cold, bitter sound that echoed across the desert.

"You're a fool," he said, his voice dripping with contempt. "A brave fool, but a fool nonetheless. Do you really think your refusal matters? Do you think you have any power here?"

Shen Chen's hand tightened on his blade. "I have the power to refuse you. That's enough."

The stranger shook his head slowly. "No. You don't understand. I've been searching for this chest for centuries. I've sacrificed everything—my sect, my home, my very soul—to find it. And you think a child like you can stand in my way?"

His aura flared, and Shen Chen felt it—a pressure so immense that it drove him to his knees. The bandits around him collapsed, their bodies trembling under the weight of the stranger's power.

Divine Transformation Realm.

Shen Chen's blood ran cold. The stranger wasn't just a Golden Core cultivator, or even a Nascent Soul cultivator. He was at the Divine Transformation Realm—a level of power that was almost mythical in the lower realm. A level that could shatter mountains and command the elements.

How? How is this possible?

"You see now, don't you?" the stranger said, his voice soft but filled with malice. "You never had a choice. You never had any power."

He walked toward the chest, his footsteps slow and deliberate. Shen Chen tried to rise, tried to stop him, but the pressure was too great. He could barely breathe, let alone fight.

The stranger reached the chest, his hand resting on its surface. "The soul anchor. Finally, after all these years."

He touched the lock, and the chest opened with a soft click. Inside lay a shard of black crystal, its surface pulsing with dark energy. The stranger picked it up, his fingers closing around it with reverent care.

"At last," he whispered. "At last, I can begin."

He turned to face the bandits, his eyes gleaming with dark satisfaction. "You resisted. You defied me. And now, you will pay the price."

He raised his hand, and black energy erupted from his palm. The bandits screamed as the energy washed over them, their bodies convulsing.

Shen Chen watched in horror as the stranger began to devour their souls—the spiritual essence of his family, his friends, the only people who had ever cared for him.

"No!" he shouted, his voice raw with desperation. "Stop! Please!"

The stranger paused, his gaze falling on Shen Chen. "You're strong," he said, his voice thoughtful. "Stronger than the others. Your soul burns with a fire I haven't seen in centuries. I could devour you, take your power for my own."

He stepped closer, his hand reaching out toward Shen Chen's chest.

"But I won't. Not yet. I want you to live, young one. I want you to remember this moment. I want you to carry it with you, to feel it fester in your heart. Because one day, when you're strong enough, you'll come looking for me. And when you do... I'll be ready."

He laughed, a cold, bitter sound. "Consider it a gift. A reason to grow stronger. A reason to live."

He turned and walked into the desert, his dark robes billowing in the wind. Shen Chen watched him go, his body broken, his spirit shattered.

And then, he collapsed.
