Boundless Legacy

Chapter 1: The unremarkable child

THE UNREMARKABLE CHILD

The Jade Dragon Mountains were said to be the spine of the Azure Cloud Empire, a range of peaks so tall they pierced the clouds and so steep that only cultivators above the Qi Condensation Realm could scale them. The Shen Clan had called these mountains home for three thousand years, their compound sprawling across three of the highest peaks.

Shen Tian, the clan patriarch, stood at the window of his study, watching the rain fall against the spirit-jade windowpanes. It was the seventh month of the year, the season when the spiritual energy of the mountains was at its peak. The rain that fell was not ordinary water—it carried traces of the mountain's spiritual essence, nourishing the herbs in the clan's gardens and filling the air with the scent of vitality.

"Patriarch!" A servant burst into the room, his face flushed with excitement. "The child! The child is born!"

Shen Tian rushed to the birthing chamber, his heart pounding with anticipation. His wife, Shen Wei, had been in labor for six hours, and he had been pacing the study, unable to focus on anything else.

He entered the chamber to find Shen Wei cradling a small bundle in her arms. Her face was pale with exhaustion, but her eyes shone with joy.

"Tian," she whispered, "come see your son."

Shen Tian approached cautiously, his heart swelling with emotion. He looked down at the infant, expecting to see something extraordinary. He had heard the legends, the stories of children born under auspicious signs. He had dreamed of his son being a prodigy, a genius who would elevate the Shen Clan to new heights.

But the child was... ordinary.

He was a healthy baby boy, his skin unblemished, his eyes a simple brown. There was no golden light, no ancient runes, no celestial phenomena. Just a normal child, like any other.

"Is there... is there something wrong?" Shen Tian asked, his voice hesitant.

Shen Wei looked at him, her expression shifting to one of concern. "Wrong? Why would there be something wrong? He is perfect."

"Of course," Shen Tian said quickly, forcing a smile. "Of course he is."

But in his heart, he could not shake the feeling of disappointment. He had hoped for something more, something that would set his son apart from the masses. Instead, he had been given a child who would be nothing more than a second son, destined to live in the shadow of whatever prodigy might come later.

"We will name him Shen Chen," Shen Tian said. "A name that means 'Divine Foundation.' He will be the foundation upon which our clan's future is built."

Shen Wei smiled, oblivious to her husband's disappointment. "Shen Chen. It is a beautiful name."
