Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

Chapter 265: Early Birds

Sean woke up the next morning,he lay still for a moment.

Olivia was not beside him.

He turned his head.

Olivia was standing in one of the hotel robes, her hair down and slightly morning-adjacent, looking at the park below with the particular attention she gave things she was actually processing rather than just seeing.

Sean looked at her for a moment.

Then he said, "You’re awake early babe."

She turned.

"The castle looks different in the morning," she said.

"Yes," he said.

"It looks more real," she said. "Which is strange because it’s not more real. It’s the same castle."

"The light is different," he said.

"The light is different," she agreed. She looked at it for another moment. Then at him. "Good morning."

"Good morning," he said.

She crossed from the window and sat on the edge of the bed and looked at him with the warm specific expression of the morning after a day that had been exactly right.

"The costumes," she said.

He looked at her.

"I want to establish," she said, "that nobody ever finds out about the costumes."

"Agreed," he said.

"Yuna would start a whole new fan account," she said.

"She would," he said.

"Specifically for the costumes," said Olivia.

"I know," he said.

She looked at the ceiling briefly. "The things I do for love," she said.

"You initiated the costumes," he said.

"I said we were doing it," she said. "There’s a distinction."

"There really isn’t," he said.

She looked at him.

He looked back.

She pressed her lips together to contain something that arrived as the real laugh anyway, the short genuine one, and then she lay back beside him and looked at the ceiling with the ease of someone who had nowhere specific to be.

"Room service," she said.

"Yes," he said.

"Proper breakfast," she said. "Not the park version. Actual food."

"I’ll order," he said.

"Order the thing you think I want before you ask me," she said. "I want to see if you get it right."

He looked at her.

"That’s a test," he said.

"Everything is a test," she said. "Mostly I’m just curious."

He picked up the room service menu from the bedside table and read it with the actual attention he gave menus and after two minutes he picked up the phone and ordered.

When he hung up she was watching him.

"What did you order me," she said.

"The eggs with the herbs," he said. "And the fruit plate. And the specific tea that has the thing in it you like."

She stared at him. "How did you know about the tea."

"You ordered it during our last date" he said. "When you were going through the venue specifications on Friday morning."

She held his gaze.

"You remembered what tea I ordered in our last date," she said.

"I remember things," he said.

"That’s either very romantic or very strange," she said.

"Both," he said.

"Both," she confirmed, and settled back against the pillow with the expression of someone who had made peace with the specific strangeness of the person they loved and found it entirely acceptable.

—------------

The food arrived twenty-three minutes later.

The room service attendant arranged it on the table near the window with efficient care and left without ceremony, which was exactly right.

Olivia sat across from Sean at the small table with the castle visible through the glass behind her and the morning park below doing its Sunday opening routines and looked at the breakfast in front of her.

"You got it right," she said.

"I know," he said.

"You’re not supposed to say I know," she said.

"What am I supposed to say," he said.

"Something humble," she said.

"I’m not humble about reading people correctly," he said. "I just do it."

She looked at him.

"That’s actually more charming than humble would have been," she said. "I want you to know I resent that."

He picked up his coffee.

She picked up the tea.

They ate with the specific unhurried ease of people who had nowhere to be and had stopped pretending the morning required urgency.

Sean paid when the room service charge was processed through the room.

[380 dollars spent]

[Balance: $68,667,467]

[3,800 dollars received — 10x Olivia bond active]

[New Balance: $68,671,267]

Outside the park was coming to life in its Sunday morning version, the gates opening, the first guests of the day arriving with the particular energy of people who had been looking forward to this specific day.

Olivia watched them from the window while she ate.

"When I was planning yesterday," she said. "I thought about whether to tell you where we were going in advance."

"And," he said.

"And I decided not to," she said. "Because I wanted to see your face when you figured it out."

"In the car," he said.

"You figured it out about ten minutes before we arrived," she said. "I was watching you figure it out and trying not to show that I was watching."

"I know," he said.

"You knew I was watching," she said.

"Yes," he said.

"And you kept a neutral expression anyway," she said.

"You wanted the reveal," he said. "So I let you have it."

She held her tea cup and looked at him across the breakfast table.

"You did that for me," she said. Quietly.

"Yes," he said.

"You figured it out and then you pretended you hadn’t so I could have the moment of telling you," she said.

"Yes," he said.

She was quiet for a moment.

"That’s the kind of thing," she said. "That’s the specific kind of thing that I don’t have words for."

"You don’t need words for it," he said.

"No," she said. "I don’t."

She looked at her breakfast and then out the window and then back at him.

"Sean," she said.

"Yeah."

"The regular evening," she said. "Number two."

"Yes," he said.

"I think I outdid number one," she said.

"You did," he said.

"The color-coded map," she said. "The carousel. The costumes." She paused. "The costumes specifically."

"The costumes," he agreed.

"Nobody ever finds out," she said.

"Nobody ever finds out," he said.

She looked at the castle one more time.

Then she finished her tea and her eggs and her fruit plate and sat back in her chair with the specific satisfied quality of someone who had planned a thing and had the thing exceed the plan by a considerable margin.
