***
It had been two days since Silas and Alpha’s episode. The phones he bought were for himself and Chloe. Anna wouldn’t accept it even if he fucked her mindlessly for assurance; I wonder how that is possible, though.
Silas had just escaped another exhausting day of classes.
Sir Wesley had nearly killed half the class with endurance drills again, one professor had assigned enough homework to qualify as psychological warfare, and Alpha had somehow managed to stab himself with a practice rapier despite it having a rounded training tip.
"Talent," Silas muttered as he walked down the sidewalk.
His school bag hung lazily over one shoulder while his other hand fiddled with his brand-new phone. The afternoon sun painted the streets gold, students filled the sidewalks, and somewhere behind him, Alpha was probably still arguing with a vending machine.
Silas smiled. Life had finally become... normal.
Well, as normal as it could be after clearing a blue rift, becoming nationally famous, evolving into an entirely new race, and accidentally acquiring three girlfriends, not accidentally, but yeah.
"Yeah, normal."
Just as he unlocked his phone, a translucent pink screen suddenly expanded before his eyes.
[System Updates Complete!]
[New System Feature Successfully Installed.]
[World Catalogue Unlocked!]
Silas blinked.
"Huh?"
’World Catalogue?’
The System answered almost immediately.
[Correct.]
[The World Catalogue is one of the Core Features of the Cupid System. It serves as the central archive and gateway for all worlds acknowledged by the System.]
Silas raised an eyebrow.
’Gateway?’
[Yes. Every world that can be visited through the System is recorded inside the Catalogue. Each world possesses unique civilizations, races, resources, histories, abilities, and laws. Some are magical. Some are technological. Some are divine. Some have already perished.]
"Perished?"
[Correct. The Catalogue preserves records even after a world’s destruction.]
Silas suddenly felt the scale of what he had obtained. He had always assumed travelling between worlds just meant an open portal, walking through, fighting monsters, and coming back. That’s how rifts worked, right?
Apparently, it was far more complicated according to the system. He entered the elevator leading toward his apartment while the explanations continued.
[Current Functions Available:]
- Browse Registered Worlds.
- Read Basic World Information.
- View Dominant Races.
- View Environmental Hazards.
- View Mana Density.
- View Compatibility Rating.
- Track Personal Exploration Progress.
’Compatibility Rating?’
[A measurement determining how suitable a world currently is for you. Entering worlds beyond your capability is strongly discouraged.]
"So there are places that can instantly kill me."
[Many.]
"Comforting."
[I know.]
The elevator doors opened. Silas stepped into the hallway leading toward his apartment.
’Can I go anywhere I want?’
[No. World access requires authorization.]
’Authorization?’
[Requirements differ. Examples:]
- Reach a required Level.
- Complete System Quests.
- Obtain a World Key.
- Receive recognition from a world’s Will.
- Unlock prerequisite worlds.
Silas rubbed his chin.
"So it’s basically like progressing through game maps."
[That comparison is... acceptable.]
’Can I see one?’
A new window appeared.
<World Catalogue:>
<Unlocked Worlds: 1>
<Locked Worlds: ???>
- Gorgath
- Classification: Lesser World
- Status: Accessible
- Primary Race: Orcs
- Secondary Races: Goblins, Ogres, Trolls, Beast Tribes
- Mana Density: High
- Threat Level: 3 Stars
- Current Compatibility: 3%
- Exploration: 0%
Silas immediately stopped walking.
"Gorgath..."
The name sounded ancient and heavy, like a world built solely for war.
[Gorgath is the homeland of the Orcish civilizations. It is also Gromda’s birthplace.]
Silas smiled.
"So if I visit..."
[You will arrive in the Orc World.]
’Can I visit now?’
[No.]
’Why?’
[Level Insufficient.]
"..."
Silas sighed.
"I had a feeling."
[Recommended Level: 20.]
"WHAT?" Silas awkwardly coughed.
"Ahem."
He quickly unlocked his apartment door and entered. The moment the door shut behind him, he finally spoke again.
"Level twenty?"
[Minimum recommendation.]
"I nearly died fighting one Orc King."
[Exactly.]
"Fair."
The system wasn’t wrong. He had emptied every drop of mana, broken his body, nearly blacked out, and that had been against just one exceptionally powerful orc, which was an A-Rank. Compared to an entire world full of them, he wasn’t suicidal, not yet. Gromda’s place might probably be just a small part of Gorgath, and the Orc King might just be one of the many kings.
He sat on the sofa. His curiosity, however, had only grown.
’How many worlds are there?’
For the first time in a while, the system became unusually quiet.
[Unknown.]
Silas blinked.
"You don’t know?"
[The Catalogue expands continuously. New worlds are discovered. Some are created, while some disappear. Some exist outside normal reality.]
"So even you don’t know everything."
[I never claimed I did.]
Silas couldn’t help smiling. He had always imagined the system as some omniscient existence. Apparently, it was learning alongside him. Or perhaps, remembering.
Before he could ask another question, a smaller notification appeared.
[World Catalogue Tutorial Completed.]
[Reward: +500 Cupid Points]
Silas stared blankly.
"I got paid for listening?"
[Positive reinforcement increases learning efficiency.]
"I like this feature."
[I know you do.]
Silas leaned back into the sofa, a grin spreading across his face. One world. That was all he had unlocked. Yet beyond that single entry lay countless unknown realms, forgotten civilizations, mythical races, and adventures waiting to be explored.
For the first time since returning from the rift, he realized something. Earth was only the beginning.
