Chapter 4: In the Shadow
Chapter 4: In the Shadow
Monday, October 12, 2009
Monday morning draped the training ground in a steady drizzle, the kind that soaks through your jacket and leaves everything gray and heavy. After two wins in a row, the air around Crawley Town felt different, lighter, like the weight of relegation fears had eased, just a bit. Niels felt it the moment he stepped onto the pitch, a quiet buzz running through the players. It wasn't cockiness, nor arrogance. It was belief, little but growing, like a spark catching in damp kindling.
By the time Niels stepped onto the pitch, The players were already warming up, jogging in loose circles, their breath puffing in the cold. Milan stood at the far end, arms crossed, watching like a hawk, not just observing but picking apart every detail, every misstep. Niels tossed his bag onto the bench, the wet grass squelching under his boots.
"Morning, boss," he called, voice cutting through the patter of rain.
Milan glanced over, giving a quick nod, his eyes still on the players stretching in the mist. "You watched the footage this weekend?"
"Had to," Niels said, tugging on his training top, the damp fabric clinging to his skin. "Didn't take long to see what we got right."
Milan's mouth twitched, almost a smile. "Good. You want to run the session today?"
The question hit Niels like a cold gust, heavy but thrilling. He didn't need to think twice. "Yeah. I think I'm ready."
This time, Milan's smile broke through, small but real. "Alright, lad. I'm right here if you need me."
Niels nodded, gratitude warming his chest, then turned to the players, who'd gathered in a loose huddle at the center of the pitch, waiting for him. Their eyes were on him, not just curious but expectant, like they were starting to trust him. It wasn't just about drills today, it was about keeping that spark alive, building on the wins, proving they weren't a fluke.
"Alright guys, listen up!" Niels shouted, his voice sharp against the drizzle. "We've shown we can fight. We've shown we can win. But that's not enough. It's about consistency now, building something real. We're not just playing for points, we're building a team, a team who can fight for promotion."
