Chapter 85: Step 85 to Greatness: You Want A Pinch Of Salt? Sweat For It Then
The evening sun had dipped low, casting a warm orange glow over the settlement.
As usual, the women had gathered near the firepit, relaxing after a long day of work. Well... not all women were relaxing.
Hannah and Sera were carefully roasting coconut shells, covering their outside with a thin layer of clay to strengthen them for boiling brine later.
Adrian stepped out of the longhouse, feeling refreshed after a short nap. He noticed Sera and Hannah at work and remembered he had to purify salt first.
It completely slipped my mind after what Tsukika did...
He sighed, calling out to Amiya.
"Fetch some of the salt from the quarry."
Amiya nodded and left after grabbing a leaf bowl.
Now that it was taken care of, Adrian wanted to check on his coconut bowls when Tsukika approached him.
"My lord," she said, bowing her head to him. "I wish to apologize for my earlier behaviour in the bathhouse. I overstepped my boundaries."
Adrian shrugged it off with a forced smile. He had wanted to apologize to her, too. After all, she was his summoned unit, and even though she had crossed a line, he too was guilty for ’leading’ her on and maybe trying a thing or two later.
But now that she had apologized first, he could only accept her apology and forget about the latter part for the moment.
"It’s fine, Tsukika. I shouldn’t have pushed you away so harshly either."
"I understand. I will respect your wishes."
Adrian nodded and was about to say more, but she turned around and left to play with Freki.
Well... maybe some other time then.
As he thought that, Amiya returned from the salt quarry with a leaf bowl filled with impure salt and handed it to Adrian. The chunks of the salt were big, in fact, too big.
If he were to put them straight away in water, it would take hours for them to dissolve, and Adrian didn’t have hours. The sun was already dipping, and before he knew it, his time on savage Earth would be up.
He wanted to at least make the salt first before leaving, that way, he would have a high settlement reward waiting for him the second he got back.
Thankfully, there was an easy way to solve the issue.
Adrian placed a large leaf on the white stone bed around the fire pit. The salt chunk was placed on top of it, and he grabbed another stone before hammering it into smaller pieces.
"Here we go," he said, looking at the impure salt. "Now it’s much easier to dissolve. Someone, go get some water from the pond."
"On it!" Hannah saluted, shooting to her feet.
She didn’t get what he wanted, but seeing that Adrian was holding the bowls their way and given that the next step was making brine, she understood he was most likely asking someone to bring water.
"Nope, not you!" Adrian yelled back.
Given Hannah’s habit of tripping every other second, by the time she brought two bowls of water, he would have left the world and returned again.
Hannah didn’t understand why Adrian was yelling at her and stopped. Adrian then told Rixxa to get the water. At the same time, he texted both Sera and Hannah to rest, saying they had done their part.
Then, he took another bowl and filled it with impure salt before following Rixxa. Normally, he would have used a thin layer of animal skin to get rid of the impurities in the soil, like small stones, wood, dirt, etc. But now, he had a better and more efficient way of cleaning the stuff.
"If my plan works, that is," he mumbled, approaching Nysa. "Hey, could you help me with something?"
"Of course, benefactor. How shall I aid you?" Nysa asked, putting the slime down. "Do you need more children to clean your feces—"
"Nothing like that!" Adrian loudly interrupted her. "Also, please stop talking about that stuff..."
"It is nothing to be ashamed about," Nysa chuckled. "Just because the slimes don’t do it, does not mean all animals don’t."
Adrian sighed, knowing there was no stopping her. So, he handed the bowl of impure salt to Nysa and asked her if she could clean it of stones, gravel, sticks, basically all impurities in it, leaving only the white powder behind.
Nysa took the bowl and examined the contents. After a few seconds, she dipped one of her smaller tentacles into the salt and stirred it gently.
"It is possible," she said calmly. "My children can absorb the impurities. But I am afraid some sand might get left behind."
"Why is that?"
"We slimes cannot taste things like humans or other animals. We just feel the texture, and that helps us decide if something can be consumed or not."
"So, you’re saying the texture of sand and salt is similar?"
Nysa nodded. The grains were of similar shape, size, and color. Hence, the baby slimes might make a mistake while purifying it.
"Looks like the plan backfired on me," Adrian smiled nervously, rubbing the back of his head.
He thought that if the slimes could purify it, then he wouldn’t have to go through the long process of making brine and then separating the impurities.
Although they could help, it wasn’t of much use to him if they couldn’t take care of all the impurities; then there was no need to extend the already extensive process.
"Anyway, thanks," he said, taking the bowl back.
Nysa nodded and went back to caring for her little ones.
Now back at the fire pit, Adrian took a thin layer of animal hide with small pin-sized holes. Then, he took some grass fibers and ash from the fire pit and placed them inside the pelt pouch.
By then, Rixxa brought some water back.
With everything ready, it was time to make the first batch of purified salt.
I hope everything goes well. Why am I worried? With Hannah by my side, obviously everything would go well!
