Chapter 49 - FORTY NINE — AN INTRUDER IN THE DARK
Candace
I screamed into my pillow, trying to fight the curling, agonizing pain shooting through my nerves.
Those assholes.
They were with Deidre again. Star howled in pain in my head as I rolled around the bed. After what felt like forever, the pain subsided to a dull, painful throb.
Breathing heavily, I wiped the tears that leaked from the corners of my eyes, clutching my pillow tightly. There was no way I could sleep in this state. Every single muscle in my body sizzled with agony.
How much longer do we have to endure this? Star groaned as I pushed off the bed.
Maybe there was some tea in the kitchen that could calm my nerves. It was pretty late, and I had sent Bree back to her quarters so she could get enough rest.
Weakly, I trudged out of my room, gripping the walls for support, and made my way down to the kitchen. It was high time I got found a solution to this.
The pack house hallways were quiet, the sound of my footsteps echoing behind me.
Striding into the kitchen, I froze mid-step, the scent of vanilla bourbon, dark coffee, and smoke heavy in the air.
Reign stood by one of the counters in the kitchen, his back to mine, draining coffee from the coffee maker into a white mug. A cigarette, with smoke drifting from one end, sat on a coaster on the counter.
His black hair was tousled, the loose curl falling across his forehead. He was shirtless, the muscles in his back rippling as he moved.
And he reeks of her! Star accused. My nose twitched at the smell of Deidre that clung to him.
His back stiffened suddenly, and he turned around slightly, his hazel eyes widening in surprise when they fell on me. Ignoring him, I scanned the kitchen, trying to remember where the tea packets were kept.
Aunt Elena used to take tea a lot and would always make me brew them. My fists clenched when I realized it was the cupboard right above the counter where the bane of my existence was currently standing.
My entire body burned with anger. I hated that he smelled good, I hated that he was looking at me. I hated that memories of his lips devouring mine at the pool filled my head with each step I took.
"Couldn’t sleep?"
My skin prickled with awareness at his dry, raspy voice.
"Such a brilliant observation," I grunted, stalking past him toward the cupboard handle. "You should do something with that genius mind of yours."
"Aww, did we keep you up?" He leaned against the counter, holding his mug against his lips.
My jaw tightened. I pulled out the tea packets without looking at him. "Go stick your dick in your precious Didi and leave me alone, Reign."
His eyes widened in surprise, drawing a dry laugh from my lips.
"Why act so surprised? Did you and your brothers expect me to be upstairs, weeping into my pillow? Were you expecting tears?" I turned to face him, leaning back against the opposite counter with my arms crossed.
"That I would cry myself to sleep every time you three go to her?"
"You’re telling me that you’re not bothered? A better lie would be believable," he scoffed, hazel eyes darkening slightly as they swept over my nightdress.
"Oh, please, you can have her. You can have her on the rooftop in broad daylight for the whole pack to see." I shrugged.
"I genuinely don’t care. And since you’re all so comfortable getting your pleasures elsewhere, I’ll be just as comfortable doing the same."
The air grew tense immediately. One second, he was leaning against the counter. Next, he had me pinned against a wall, his hand flat on the wall beside my head. I could see his wolf pushing to the surface, his hazel eyes turning golden as he growled.
"You wouldn’t dare,"
He had to be joking. Was he pissed? He just fucked my cousin, and he was pissed at me for saying I would do the same?
"You must think I hold you to some measure of esteem, if you think I’m asking for your permission," I cocked my head to the side. "I’m only telling you what’s going to happen."
His jaw tightened, and he leaned in slightly, his hot breath whipping against my face. His voice dropped even lower as he spat. "You should know the day another man puts his hands on you, it will be the last thing those hands ever do,"
"You have some nerve saying that—"
"There will be no other man’s scent on your skin." His eyes dropped to my lips briefly, then back up, a possessive glint in them. "No other man’s mark on your neck. No other man in the same room as you and that’s not a request, Candace,"
My blood boiled so hot, I could feel the heat climbing up my throat.
Damn him, Star growled in my head.
"That’s rich." My voice came out steady, thankfully, even though my heart was slamming so hard against my ribcage.
"Coming from the man who just spent the last hour in my cousin’s bed."
"That’s different,"
"It is absolutely not different." I put my hand flat on his chest and shoved, but the asshole barely moved. "Get off me. I don’t need Deidre’s leftovers."
His face dropped closer with those maddening eyes.
"Liar." His tongue moved over his lower lip slowly. "I can feel you, Candace, through the bond. All of it, your pain, your anger, your... arousal..." He groaned softly, leaning even closer, and my face flamed hotly.
"Don’t flatter yourself. Don’t worry, very soon, you won’t have to bear the burden of feeling my emotions."
"What?" His brows snapped together. "What does that mean-"
"You’ll find out soon enough," I said, ducking under his arm and grabbing my tea packets off the counter,
I raced out of the kitchen, then, without looking back, stomped all the way to my room in fury. I had every plan to learn shielding soon. The door to my room swung open, I had barely stepped inside when something sharp pierced the side of my neck.
I gasped, my hand flying up to catch a syringe buried in my skin. I tried to turn around, but my body went cold all of a sudden, and my vision turned blurry as I gave into the darkness.
