Chapter 369 - 369: Emperor of Luck Bloodline?
The first thought that flashed through Zhao Yuan's mind was, 'A ghost is here.'
But a closer look revealed that the approaching figure was completely different from Ying Ji's Ghost Spirit, which he had seen before.
To see Ying Ji's Ghost Spirit, he had to activate his Qi Observation Technique, and even then, he didn't see a human shape—just a flickering, indistinct shadow of Qi. But the figure now walking gracefully down the path was no shadow of Qi. It was a delicate, pretty girl!
The girl looked to be about sixteen. Zhao Yuan could see her figure, her features, and even the expression on her face with perfect clarity. At the same time, his Qi Observation Technique revealed that she possessed not only Yin Qi but also Yang Qi, although the Yin was clearly overwhelming the Yang.
An imbalance of Yin overwhelming Yang was quite common in modern people, so Zhao Yuan didn't dwell on it. He dismissed his earlier suspicion and muttered to himself, 'So she's human after all. I thought she was a ghost summoned by the Soul Summoning Array. Got excited for nothing.'
But soon, he felt something was off again. 'What's with this girl? Why is she wandering around campus at two or three in the morning?'
On top of that, the girl's clothes struck Zhao Yuan as bizarre.
She wore an ancient-style jacket over a pleated skirt, a look that was both elegant and archaic. You'd normally only see an outfit like that in historical dramas; in real life, few people besides historical costume enthusiasts would dress that way.
'Is she heading to a cosplay event? Or some kind of historical costume party? But neither of those would last until two or three in the morning, would they?' The more Zhao Yuan thought, the more uneasy he felt. He stealthily pulled out the Fearless Pearl and an Exorcism Talisman, clutching them for protection. "Excuse me," he called out. "It's pretty late. Why are you still wandering around campus?"
The girl heard him, but she didn't seem to understand what he meant. She furrowed her brow, her face a mask of confusion.
Zhao Yuan was taken aback. 'She doesn't understand Chinese? Is she Japanese or Korean? But she doesn't look like it.'
While he was puzzling over this, the girl walked straight toward him.
Zhao Yuan quickly shouted, "Stop! Don't come any closer!" He thrust the Fearless Pearl and the Exorcism Talisman out toward the girl.
Seeing the two Magical Treasures, the girl didn't stop. In fact, a flicker of interest appeared in her eyes. She picked up her pace and, in the blink of an eye, was right in front of Zhao Yuan, reaching out to touch the two Magical Artifacts.
Zhao Yuan instinctively tried to pull his hand back, but before he could, her hand was already touching the Fearless Pearl and the Exorcism Talisman.
Then, something horrifying happened.
The girl's hand passed straight through the Fearless Pearl and the Exorcism Talisman, and right through Zhao Yuan's hand as well.
Zhao Yuan felt a bone-chilling cold wash over him, making his hands ache as if his blood were about to freeze. He couldn't help but shiver.
The girl looked down at her hand, a helpless, wry smile touching her lips.
Zhao Yuan, on the other hand, scrambled back several steps.
What had just happened confirmed the girl's identity beyond a doubt—she was a Ghost!
Even though Zhao Yuan had seen Ying Ji's Ghost Spirit before, his scalp tingled. He felt a mix of excitement and fear. 'Holy cow, the Soul Summoning Array really did summon a Ghost? But this one looks... different.'
Ying Ji's Ghost Spirit was completely invisible to the naked eye; he had to use his Qi Observation Technique to see it at all. And even then, it was just a shadow of Qi. But the female Ghost before him was clearly visible to the naked eye and had a human form. After activating his Qi Observation Technique, he could see that she possessed not only Yin Qi, but Yang Qi as well.
Zhao Yuan quickly pulled out the Sheepskin Book and began to flip through its pages.
The female Ghost walked over and stood beside Zhao Yuan, craning her neck to look at the book along with him. The moment she did, Zhao Yuan felt an icy chill invade the side of his body closest to her. It was as if one half of his body had been shoved into a freezer while the other remained outside. The sensation was beyond strange.
Fortunately, Zhao Yuan was fairly certain the female Ghost meant him no harm. Otherwise, she wouldn't be looking over his shoulder at a book; she would have attacked him directly.
The female Ghost stared at the Sheepskin Book for a moment before frowning and shaking her head, a look of disappointment on her face as if she couldn't understand the text. Her expression was surprisingly endearing, completely lacking the sinister terror one would expect from a Ghost Soul. Instead, she seemed more like a cute girl-next-door, evoking a sense of protectiveness.
For some reason, Zhao Yuan was reminded of his own sister. He instinctively raised his hand, wanting to give the female Ghost's head a couple of affectionate ruffles.
It was an affectionate gesture he often made toward his sister, Zhao Ling.
But, just as one might expect, his hand passed straight through the female Ghost's head.
Both human and Ghost were stunned.
It took Zhao Yuan a moment to realize he wasn't standing next to his sister, but a female Ghost. He cursed himself inwardly, 'My nerve is something else, trying to pat a Ghost,' while awkwardly apologizing aloud, "Sorry, so sorry! I didn't mean to do that."
Though the female Ghost couldn't understand his words, she seemed to grasp the meaning from his expression and gestures. Amused, she pursed her lips and smiled.
Seeing that she didn't seem to hold it against him, Zhao Yuan breathed a sigh of relief and went back to the Sheepskin Book.
The female Ghost stood nearby, curiously observing her surroundings, seemingly fascinated by everything on campus.
Zhao Yuan soon found the answer he was looking for in the Sheepskin Book. 'I see. This female Ghost's power is far greater than Ying Ji's Ghost Spirit; she already has the ability to take a physical form and manifest. In a way, she's on par with the Ghost Immortals of legend. Of course, according to the Sheepskin Book, she's still a long way from being a true Ghost Immortal. She still needs to pass the Five Elements Tribulation!'
'I can't believe it. On my very first soul-summoning attempt, I drew such a powerful character.' Zhao Yuan was thrilled and proud. 'Is the Soul Summoning Array in the Sheepskin Book just that amazing, or do I just naturally have the blood of an Emperor of Luck? Whether I'm summoning bugs or souls, do I always pull an SSR?'
After teasing himself for a moment, Zhao Yuan turned to the female Ghost. "Sorry," he said. "I was just trying to see if this magic worked tonight. I didn't need anything else. I'm really sorry to have disturbed you. I'll end the summoning now and send you back."
Zhao Yuan had never considered Ghost Cultivation. For one, it wasn't easy; it required a huge investment of Spirit Medicine Treasures and a great deal of energy. He was already struggling to keep up with his own Cultivation, so where would he find the resources and energy to spend on a ghost? Besides, Zhao Yuan wasn't confident he could persuade this female Ghost to become his Ghost Spirit, let alone control her.
This was a Ghost who could manifest a physical form, which made her far more powerful than Zhao Yuan. If she ever decided to turn the tables and overpower her master, he'd be utterly screwed.
So, it was better to play it safe and send the female Ghost away!
