Chapter 704: Critical Condition
Half an hour later, the police and ambulances arrived at the scene.
Stepping out of the police cars, the officers immediately began clearing the area. "Step back! Step back!"
Using yellow tape, they secured the perimeter while the paramedics rushed toward the unconscious woman lying at the center of the scorched ground.
Squatting beside her, one of the paramedics checked her pulse and was shocked to find that she was still alive.
"She is still alive! Hurry, get her onto the stretcher!"
At his words, shocked gasps rippled through the chaotic crowd.
"Heavens! She is still alive after being struck by lightning?! What kind of luck is that?!"
As the crowd buzzed with disbelief and curiosity, the paramedics quickly loaded the woman into the ambulance and rushed toward the nearest hospital.
An hour later, news of a woman surviving a lightning strike shot to the top of internet search trends. Even major news channels scrambled to report the shocking incident.
At the same time, Gui Xiaoxu was in the middle of an international meeting in his study.
"Then, proceed as planned. Tomorrow, we will—"
Before he could finish his words, the door suddenly burst open.
Bam!
Looking away from the laptop screen, Gui Xiaoxu saw Ke Ting rush in, his face deathly pale.
Frowning slightly, Gui Xiaoxu asked, "What happened?"
Ignoring the ongoing meeting, Ke Ting replied anxiously, "Boss, we just received news that Miss Bai was in an accident and is currently undergoing surgery."
The moment Gui Xiaoxu heard this, his expression darkened. Turning back to his laptop, he said, "We’ll end the meeting here."
Without waiting for a response, he ended the call and shut the laptop. Grabbing his coat, he strode out of the study, with Ke Ting close behind.
At the same time, Zu Wu received the same news. Rushing toward the CEO’s office, he ran as fast as he could.
Seeing him hurry past the secretary working area, the secretaries and assistants, who were working overtime, exchanged curious glances, but no one dared to ask questions.
Arriving outside Pei Jianyuan’s office, Zu Wu knocked twice before pushing the glass door open without waiting for a response.
"CEO Pei, bad news! Miss Bai had an accident and is now in surgery!"
The moment Pei Jianyuan heard this, the pen in his hand dropped onto the desk. Looking at Zu Wu, he asked in disbelief, "What did you just say?"
Zu Wu took a deep breath to steady himself before replying, "About an hour and a half ago, lightning struck the suburbs of Fu Cheng Town. When people went to check, they found Miss Bai there."
Hearing this, Pei Jianyuan felt dizzy, and his vision darkened.
Startled by how pale he turned, Zu Wu exclaimed, "CEO Pei!"
Rushing forward, he quickly supported Pei Jianyuan.
Raising a hand, Pei Jianyuan closed his eyes briefly before saying, "I’m fine. Go to the hospital."
"Yes, CEO Pei."
With Zu Wu supporting him, Pei Jianyuan stood up and hurried out of the CEO’s office.
By the time he arrived at the First Hospital in Fu Cheng Town, he saw several familiar faces sitting on the long chairs in the corridor.
"CEO Yu, CEO Gui, Old Master Yu—why are you all here?" he asked as he approached them.
Hearing this, Yu Xiangyu, Yu Tianshuo, Gui Xiaoxu, Ke Ting, Chi Limin, and Xu Baoyi all turned to look at him.
Surprised to see Pei Jianyuan, Yu Xiangyu helped Yu Tianshuo to his feet.
Looking at Pei Jianyuan, Yu Tianshuo asked, "CEO Pei, why are you here? Do you also know Miss Bai?"
Caught off guard by his question, Pei Jianyuan paused for a moment before replying, "I do."
Hearing this, Yu Tianshuo did not press further and sat on the long chair.
After exchanging brief greetings, Pei Jianyuan looked at the closed operating room doors. Clenching his fists, he felt increasingly restless.
As he subconsciously paced back and forth, Gui Xiaoxu watched him thoughtfully.
While everyone waited anxiously, time passed slowly.
Four hours later, the light above the operating room finally went out.
Seeing this, everyone stood up at once.
Soon, the doors opened, and the chief surgeon walked out. Surprised to see several of the most powerful men gathered outside, he paused mid-step.
Yu Tianshuo stepped forward and asked, his voice filled with both worry and hope, "Doctor, how is Miss Bai?"
The chief surgeon came back to his senses, then calmly replied, "The surgery was successful. The patient has passed the critical stage, but we still need to monitor her condition for a few days. She will be moved to a ward shortly."
Pointing toward the nurse’s station, he added, "If you wish to visit or stay for tonight, please register at the counter."
Hearing this, everyone let out a sigh of relief.
Yu Tianshuo nodded gratefully. "Thank you, Doctor."
The surgeon nodded and returned inside.
Before anyone else could speak, Pei Jianyuan turned to Zu Wu. "Go complete the registration. Arrange the best room for her and call my doctors. Have them come here and take care of Hanyun."
"Yes, CEO Pei." Zu Wu replied before hurrying off.
Turning back to the others, Pei Jianyuan said, "Thank you for coming. It’s late. Please return for now and visit again tomorrow."
Gui Xiaoxu’s expression darkened slightly at his words.
Looking at Pei Jianyuan, he said coldly, "CEO Pei, if I remember correctly, Miss Bai has never met you before. The two of you are essentially strangers. It is inappropriate for you to stay."
Pei Jianyuan met Gui Xiaoxu’s gaze, his expression unreadable.
Sensing the tension in the air, Yu Xiangyu calmly intervened. "Everyone, Miss Bai just finished surgery and needs rest. It’s already past midnight, and we are all tired. Let’s return for now and come back tomorrow. With the doctors and nurses here, nothing will happen to her."
Pei Jianyuan knew that only he and Zu Wu knew Bai Hanyun was his daughter, so he could only nod in agreement.
However, Gui Xiaoxu had other thoughts.
