Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Chapter 278: Every Law at Once

Ren gave the new orders at the outer landing, with the volcanic ring behind him.

"If we get separated, back through Tide to the arch. Ward leads. If Ward can’t, Riptide takes over. Spear knows the road. Don’t wait here for me."

He waited for both acknowledgments, then sent them to their positions.

Ward carried Keep to the mouth of the third passage. Snap took a firing position just inside it, while Anvil remained on the outer landing with Balm against its shell. Saber and Ribbon watched the approaches beside the withdrawal lane. Lantern marked the way back, Knock waited with the signal, and Mosaic and Hearth stayed at the sheltered rock behind them.

Spear settled beside its Lawfire, clear of the entrance. Ren pointed out the route to the waiting group, then the way beyond them toward Tide. Spear followed the gesture and nodded.

Riptide moved to the second passage with Bolt on the outer bank. They would approach from there while Ren watched the response. If it drew fire away from his passage, he would try the opening.

Keep confirmed the markers at both mouths. Ren checked their positions himself before gathering a sheet of water beneath his feet.

He looked back along the withdrawal lane as well. Ward had room to turn, and the others could reach the sheltered rock without crossing either test passage. Beyond that, Spear would take them around the headland to the current Riptide had found beneath the front.

"Now."

— • —

Riptide sent the current into the second passage. Bolt moved along the bank, then turned back as grey spread across the water ahead.

Darkness covered the far end. A green burn reached along the bank Bolt had left, spreading over the rock behind it.

In Ren’s passage, pale fire drew back from a narrow strip beside the hardened water. The stone formed during his previous approach remained, but there was room to pass along its edge.

He drove the sheet into the opening.

Heat stripped water from his covering as he followed the lane, with stone on his left and the bank close on his right. He replaced it without stopping. Lantern’s light marked the entrance behind him; ahead, the notch where his test stream had slowed came into view.

He reached it before the bank answered.

A tongue of fire swept across his path, then bent toward him as he checked his movement.

The seed-torc bloomed at his collar. Black petals opened between his face and the approaching flame, folding around it until the fire disappeared. The bloom withered while Ren backed away, and a golden flash struck the fresh petals opening beside his shoulder.

He kept moving through the falling dust. Gravebloom had caught both strikes, but the water ahead was hardening across the lane.

Heat reached him through the thinning layer at his chest. Ren drew a breath and kept the sheet steady while replacing it. He could still control his movement and the covering together; the obstacle ahead was what forced him back.

Ren withdrew before the stone reached his sheet. He came out beside Ward, still holding the covering, and looked toward Riptide.

For a moment, the diversion had worked.

— • —

Ren signaled Riptide to repeat it.

The second current drew grey across the other passage. Darkness followed, and green flame spread along its bank. In Ren’s lane, the pale burn shifted away from the same stretch of water.

He went while it was open.

This time he began gathering for Deepsnap as he advanced. Water drew toward his right palm, and he held the forming point ahead of him, giving IMPACT the additional time it needed.

Near the notch, he saw that the strip farther along the bank was still burning. It had not withdrawn with the rest.

Fresh fire spread toward it. Stone formed from both sides of the lane, closing the water between them, while darkness hid the vent. Green flame ran back along the near bank toward the mouth.

Ren glanced toward Keep’s marker. The growth on its rock shriveled where the green reached it, collapsing against the stone. He turned back before the delayed report could tell him anything more.

The first working was still in place. He had entered the same lane and brought another response down over it.

Ren stopped the buildup before Deepsnap was ready. The gathered water fell away from his palm.

"Back!"

Knock’s three notes sounded behind him as he turned the sheet toward Ward.

— • —

The pull caught him sideways.

Water dragged beneath his feet toward a break in the passage wall. He felt his control stretch, as it had when the test stream vanished and emerged from another mouth.

Ren drove the sheet against the bank and stepped onto the rock before it could carry him through. His heels settled into the stance, and roots gripped the cracks beneath his boots.

[HOLDFAST — BEGINNER: HOLDING.]

The pull tightened. His knees bent under it, but the grip he’d inherited from Aldric held. The sheet tore away below him and vanished into the distorted passage without him.

At the mouth, Snap left its firing rock. Saber and Ribbon cleared the approach while Anvil backed from the landing, keeping Balm above the water. Ward remained beside the exit until they had passed.

A slab broke from the bank above the withdrawal lane. Snap struck its projecting edge before moving, splitting off the part that hung over Ward. Saber and Ribbon pushed the smaller fallen pieces away from the water the whale would need to turn in.

Grey spread through the shallows around the whale’s tail.

Ward tried to turn, and the tail caught. The stone kept forming around it, narrowing the remaining water beside its flank. Keep’s cradle stayed high between its shoulders.

"Riptide. Take over. Get them past the front."

Riptide brought a current through the remaining gap. Ward pulled against the stone, stopped, then drove its body forward again.

A strip of flesh tore free along the side of its tail. Blood spread behind the whale as it entered the current, swimming with shorter strokes. Riptide stayed beside it while Bolt and Lantern led the withdrawal toward the sheltered rock.

Ren kept supplying the covering as they moved. At the rear position, Hearth and Mosaic joined them. Spear led onward, and the whole group passed beyond the landing toward the headland.

The sideways pull eased. Ren released Holdfast and tried to follow along the bank.

— • —

He made several steps before the rock gave beneath his next foot.

Its edge had greyed while he was anchored. Stone crumbled under his boot, and he caught the bank with one hand as the ledge broke away. He drew more water from storage, trying to gather another sheet beneath him.

The first layer hardened as it touched the sea.

Ren pulled himself higher and lifted the next working clear of the surface, but the water moved sluggishly through the space below the broken ledge. Beyond it, the strip of pale fire still crossed the open route to the mouth.

He let the failed working fall and called on the heel-seeds.

Petals opened beneath his boots. Ren pushed away from the bank, reaching toward the next outcrop, and felt the same slowing catch his movement. His hand crept toward the rock while the bloom below him withered.

He caught its edge before he fell. His shoulders took the weight, and he hauled himself onto the narrow shelf, dragging one leg clear of the burning water.

The pack was still moving toward the front. Keep’s reports came in late, carrying Ward’s uneven strokes and the others gathered around it. Ren maintained their covering while he worked along the shelf, looking for a path outside the slowed stretch.

A flare from the far bank turned toward him. Gravebloom opened against it, and the spent petals fell into water that had hardened around the foot of the rock. The armor left that stone untouched.

He reached the end of the shelf and stopped. Pale fire filled the route beyond it. The vent above had gone quiet, but the burning strip remained fixed while water flowed through it.

Ren checked his stored water. He had been feeding the pack’s covering throughout the retreat, and there was little left. He kept the flow steady while searching the bank for another foothold.

Green-stained water washed over his boot. The skin beneath it prickled, then burned; when he shifted his weight, his ankle responded slowly. He lifted it clear, but the burning stayed.

A report finally reached him from Keep. Spear had crossed the pale line. The group followed, with Riptide alongside Ward. Ren held the covering until the last confirmation arrived, then drew what water remained around himself.

The rock under his hand flaked away.

He fell against the shelf and tried to rise. His fingers slipped on the crumbling surface, his breath came short, and the water over his shoulders boiled away faster than he could replace it. The broad grey crust kept spreading through the shallows below him, burying the lower holds.

Through a break in the smoke, he could still see the passage he had used. Darkness covered its far end. Stone filled the lane, green stained the bank, and the strip of fire remained where it had blocked his retreat.

Ren reached for the higher rock. His hand slowed before it touched it, and the last of his covering broke.

[CAUSE OF DEATH: EVERYTHING.]

— • —

Flowers brushed his face.

Ren rolled onto his back, drew a breath and sat up. Sunlight reached the field through the Worldroot’s leaves.

"Twenty."

[REVIVALS REMAINING TODAY: ZERO.]

He looked at his hands. Then he reached for Keep and found the link gone.

The pack had crossed the front before he fell. He held on to that while getting to his feet. His last view of the passage remained clear too: the responses had stayed there throughout the withdrawal, occupying the route long after he’d turned back.

He needed to hear what Keep had seen from outside it.

At the shore, Ren replenished the seawater in storage. He waited until he had a full supply, then followed the beach to the arch and looked through at the black shelf beyond.

There was movement in the water below it.

He stepped through.

— • —

The trial families were still on the waiting ledge, their Lawfires gathered in sheltered water nearby. The pack rested farther along the landing, leaving the natives’ approach clear.

Ren went to Ward first.

The whale lay with its flank toward the stone. Balm had moved from Anvil and spread along the torn side of its tail. Raw flesh showed at the edges of the moss, and a thin wash of blood still drifted into the surrounding water.

Ren waded beside it and placed his hand above the wound. Ward’s eye followed him. He left his palm there while the whale shifted its tail, then stopped when the movement pulled at the torn flesh.

It had swum this far, but that was no reason to put it back at an exit under attack.

Ren renewed the cool water around Ward’s flank without directing the flow across the exposed flesh. The whale settled as he held it there. Balm stayed pressed along the wound, and Ren waited for the tail to stop straining before taking his hand away.

Ren looked over the rest before turning to Keep. Anvil’s shell remained closed beneath the old scar. Snap had settled beside the ledge, and the others were gathered along the water with Hearth behind them.

Keep’s cradle rested on the stone. Ren sat beside it, renewed the link and waited for the record.

His passage came first. The marker had reported fire and hardening water before the green reached it. Its last impression showed the approach closing. Nothing followed from that rock after the spore died.

The second marker had lasted longer.

He kept the two sources separate as he followed the impressions. The first rock had gone silent before the withdrawal was complete. Whatever happened there afterward came from his own sight, including the burning strip beside the bank where he had been trapped.

Its impressions showed the response to Riptide’s diversion: grey water, darkness across the approach, the visible banks disappearing. During the withdrawal, while Keep was still within range, part of that view changed.

Moving water appeared beside the stone. A stretch of the passage that had been obscured became visible again, then disappeared under another spreading burn. The marker had seen only the approach, not the vent beyond it.

Ren went through that part again. The interval occurred during the retreat, while his own passage remained occupied. Keep’s record showed the brief opening; his last view supplied what the destroyed marker could no longer tell them.

While his passage was still burning, part of the other one had opened.

He couldn’t use the delayed reports to time a charge. Nor had the marker shown him a clear route all the way to the focus. He would need to watch the opening himself and see whether it returned.

But he had somewhere else to look now.

— • —

Spear came down from the ledge with the marker Ren had lent it.

It held the rod toward him and followed the notches, pointing back along the Tide road. Ren recognized the turn from their journey: the junction near the split stone, where the inward road met the way to the arch.

[CONCEPT: ROAD. CLOSING.]

Spear moved its finger farther along the rod, then pointed toward the waiting families.

Ren looked past them toward the road. These people had reached the landing, but others were still at Tide: the Glassfire with its damaged chest, the keeper, the families crowded around the lower platforms.

He checked when the allowance would return. The front had reached the split stone while he’d inspected the routes and escorted one small group. It was already spreading toward the junction. He couldn’t leave the crossing that long and expect it to remain usable.

The arch stood behind him. He could take the pack home through it now.

Ren looked down at Ward’s tail, then back toward the road. He would have to change who held the exit and how they approached it. Repeating the same charge would leave them trapped again.

"Spear. Take us back to the outer landing."

He pointed along the inward route, then toward the cones. Spear watched the gesture, tucked the rod away and descended toward its Lawfire.

Ren checked that Balm remained settled over Ward’s wound before stepping away. The whale would need a different place in the next plan.

He closed his right hand, then opened it. His fingers answered.

There would be no return to the flowers if this attempt killed him.

He stepped down toward Spear.
