Chapter 195: Now
For several seconds, Denzel said nothing.
The older man stood across from him.
The Crown rested on his head.
Seven silver fragments formed a complete circle around it, each piece fitting perfectly against the next as though they had never been separate.
And despite everything Denzel had seen since entering the chamber, one thing bothered him more than the Crown.
The man’s face.
It was his face.
Older.
Sharper.
The same eyes.
The same shape of his jaw.
Even the slight crease that appeared between his eyebrows when he was thinking was familiar.
Denzel stared at him.
Then he looked at the system notification still hovering in front of his vision.
[Royal Ancestral Presence Detected.]
[Identity: Unknown.]
[Relationship to Host: Direct.]
[Warning.]
[Do not engage.]
Denzel’s expression barely changed.
’Of course.’
The system had spent his entire life telling him what to do.
Now, for the first time, it was telling him what not to do.
That alone made him want to do it.
Denzel looked back at the man.
"You created the system?"
The man’s expression remained calm.
"I did."
Denzel waited.
Nothing else happened.
No explanation.
No dramatic revelation.
Just those three words.
Denzel narrowed his eyes.
"That’s it?"
A faint smile appeared on the man’s face.
"You expected more?"
"Considering I was just told the system I’ve been relying on for years was created by someone who looks like an older version of me, yes."
The man’s smile widened slightly.
"You’re still yourself."
"I’d hope so."
"Your grandfather asked the same kind of questions."
Denzel’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
"You knew my grandfather."
"I knew him better than anyone."
Denzel took a slow breath.
"And you look like me."
"I know."
"You’re wearing the Crown."
"I am."
"You created the system."
"Yes."
Denzel stared at him.
"You’re making this remarkably difficult to understand."
The man chuckled.
"I wanted to see whether you would ask questions or simply accept what you were shown."
"And?"
"You ask questions."
"Good."
Denzel folded his arms.
"Then start answering."
The smile disappeared.
The man looked at him for several seconds.
Then he raised one hand.
The chamber changed.
Not physically.
At least, not in the way Denzel expected.
The seven pillars around them began glowing.
Lines of silver light appeared across the floor, connecting each pillar to the center of the chamber.
Denzel looked down.
The lines formed a massive circular pattern beneath his feet.
It looked almost like a diagram.
Or a circuit.
At the center was a symbol Denzel had never seen before.
The same symbol appeared beneath the Crown.
"You call it a system," the man said.
Denzel glanced at him.
"What else would I call it?"
"A cage."
Denzel’s eyes narrowed.
"A cage?"
"The system was never created to give you power."
Denzel remained silent.
"It was created to prevent power from destroying you."
The words settled heavily in the chamber.
Denzel looked at his hands.
His Royal Authority still felt different.
He could feel something beneath his skin.
Not energy.
Not exactly.
Something deeper.
Like a second heartbeat.
"You said my grandfather was the first vessel."
"He was."
"And he failed."
The man’s eyes lowered slightly.
"He stopped."
"That’s different."
"Is it?"
Denzel didn’t answer.
The man stepped forward.
For the first time, Denzel noticed something strange.
The older man’s feet did not make a sound.
Not even against the stone.
"You have reached one hundred percent Royal Authority," the man said.
Denzel’s eyes flicked toward the system.
[Royal Authority: ???]
"Apparently."
"No."
The man shook his head.
"You haven’t reached one hundred percent."
Denzel frowned.
"The system says otherwise."
"The system doesn’t know what you are."
The chamber became silent.
Denzel looked at him.
"What does that mean?"
"It means the measurement ended."
Denzel’s gaze hardened.
"Because I exceeded it?"
"Because the number stopped being useful."
That answer bothered him more than a simple explanation would have.
Denzel looked toward the seven pillars.
"So what happens now?"
The man didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at the Crown.
"That depends on you."
Denzel almost laughed.
"Everyone keeps saying things like that."
"Your parents?"
"My grandfather’s records. The First King. The system."
The older man smiled faintly.
"Then perhaps you’ve noticed the pattern."
"They’re all avoiding the important part."
"Exactly."
Denzel’s eyes narrowed.
"Why?"
"Because the truth is dangerous when given to someone who isn’t ready."
"And you think I’m not ready?"
"I think you are ready for something."
The man looked directly into Denzel’s eyes.
"But not everything."
Denzel hated that answer.
Not because it was wrong.
Because it sounded exactly like the kind of answer someone gave when they knew far more than they intended to reveal.
He took a step forward.
The system immediately reacted.
[Warning.]
[Host is approaching restricted presence.]
[Disengage.]
Denzel stopped.
The older man’s eyes moved toward the floating notification.
For the first time, genuine amusement appeared on his face.
"It still warns you."
Denzel looked at him.
"It?"
"The system."
"You can see it?"
"Of course."
Denzel’s eyes narrowed.
The man lifted his hand.
The system window changed.
Not because Denzel touched it.
Not because he commanded it.
The words simply rearranged themselves.
[Unauthorized External Interaction.]
[Attempting to Reject.]
[Failure.]
Denzel’s expression hardened.
The system had never done that before.
The man looked at the notification.
"Still stubborn."
Denzel looked between them.
"You can control it."
"I created it."
"You keep saying that."
"Because you keep asking."
"Then prove it."
Silence.
The man’s expression changed.
Not anger.
Something closer to disappointment.
"You shouldn’t challenge what you don’t understand."
Denzel gave him a flat look.
"That’s usually what people say when they don’t want to prove something."
The man laughed.
A genuine laugh this time.
"You really are his descendant."
Denzel’s expression remained unchanged.
"My grandfather?"
"Yes."
The man’s laughter faded.
"He was exactly the same."
Denzel’s eyes sharpened.
"What happened to him?"
The man looked away.
"He reached the same door you have reached."
"And?"
"He opened it."
Denzel waited.
"And that killed him?"
"No."
The man’s eyes returned to him.
"Something worse happened."
Denzel didn’t speak.
"He survived."
The words carried more weight than they should have.
Denzel felt the atmosphere change.
The silver lines beneath his feet began pulsing.
Once.
Twice.
Then again.
Something moved beneath the chamber.
Not a person.
Something enormous.
Denzel slowly looked down.
"What is underneath us?"
The older man didn’t answer.
The Crown above his head began glowing brighter.
"Denzel."
The tone of his voice had changed.
"Do not move."
Denzel stared at him.
"You just told me not to engage."
"That was different."
"How?"
The man looked toward the center of the chamber.
"Because it has noticed you."
Denzel’s body became still.
The silver light beneath him suddenly went dark.
Every pillar stopped glowing.
The chamber fell into complete darkness.
Then—
A sound came from beneath the floor.
A heartbeat.
Slow.
Massive.
Denzel felt it inside his chest.
Boom.
His own heart answered.
Boom.
The older man’s expression finally lost its calmness.
"Damn."
Denzel looked at him.
"You know what that is?"
The man didn’t answer.
Boom.
The floor cracked.
A thin black line appeared directly beneath Denzel’s feet.
His Royal Authority surged instinctively.
The Crown on the older man’s head immediately reacted.
Seven silver beams shot outward.
The crack widened.
Denzel looked down.
Something was looking back.
Not eyes.
A presence.
Ancient.
Cold.
And somehow familiar.
The system appeared again.
But this time, the message was different.
[Unknown Authority Detected.]
[Classification: Royal.]
[Classification: Ancestral.]
[Classification: ERROR.]
[Source cannot be identified.]
Denzel’s breathing slowed.
’Even the system doesn’t know.’
The older man stepped between Denzel and the crack.
"Stay behind me."
Denzel stared at his back.
"You?"
"Yes."
"You just said I shouldn’t move."
"I changed my mind."
Denzel almost smiled.
"That doesn’t inspire confidence."
The older man glanced over his shoulder.
"For once, listen."
The crack beneath them widened again.
Something pushed against the other side.
The entire chamber shook.
The older man’s hand tightened.
For the first time, Denzel saw fear in his eyes.
Not concern.
Not caution.
Fear.
Real fear.
Denzel’s expression became serious.
"What is it?"
The man stared into the darkness.
"The reason the Crown was created."
Denzel froze.
The man’s voice dropped.
"And the reason the system was necessary."
The floor exploded.
Denzel was thrown backward.
The older man moved instantly, raising one hand.
A wall of silver energy formed between Denzel and the opening.
Something struck it.
The impact shook the entire chamber.
The older man’s body slid several meters across the floor.
Denzel caught himself.
"You’re losing."
The older man didn’t respond.
Another impact.
The barrier cracked.
Denzel’s Royal Authority surged.
The seven marks beneath his collarbone burned.
The Crown above the man’s head responded immediately.
"Denzel!"
The older man shouted.
"Don’t use your Authority!"
Denzel stopped.
"Why?"
The man’s eyes widened.
"Because it isn’t trying to attack me."
Another impact.
The barrier shattered.
The older man was thrown aside.
The darkness beneath the floor rose.
Denzel stood alone.
The presence stopped.
For one second, nothing happened.
Then the system appeared.
[Target Recognition Attempted.]
[Processing.]
[Processing.]
[Processing.]
Denzel’s eyes widened.
The system had never taken this long.
Finally, new words appeared.
[Target Recognized.]
Denzel’s heartbeat stopped for half a second.
[Identity: Royal Origin.]
[Relationship: Direct Ancestor.]
[Authority: Unknown.]
[Threat Level: Cannot Calculate.]
Then one final notification appeared.
[System Creator Detected.]
Denzel looked toward the older man.
The man was on one knee.
His Crown had cracked.
But the notification wasn’t referring to him.
Denzel slowly turned toward the darkness.
The presence emerged.
A hand came through first.
Then an arm.
Then a figure stepped out of the opening.
Denzel stared.
The figure looked like him.
Not older.
Not younger.
The same age.
The same face.
The same eyes.
But there was something fundamentally different about him.
He wasn’t wearing the Crown.
He didn’t need to.
The seven silver fragments floated behind him like a halo.
Denzel’s body instinctively prepared for a fight.
The figure looked at him.
Then smiled.
"Finally."
Denzel said nothing.
The figure tilted his head.
"You’ve taken long enough."
Denzel’s eyes narrowed.
"Who are you?"
The figure’s smile disappeared.
"I am the reason your bloodline exists."
The chamber trembled.
"And the reason your system was built."
Denzel stared at him.
Then the figure spoke the words that made even the older man lower his head.
"I am your beginning."
Denzel’s Royal Authority surged.
The system went completely silent.
For the first time since Denzel had awakened it—
There was no notification.
No instruction.
No warning.
Nothing.
The figure smiled again.
"Now."
He extended his hand.
"Let’s see what you’ve become."
