Chapter 180: Waiting
Denzel stepped into the alley.
The Knight followed closely behind.
The buildings on either side blocked most of the sunlight, leaving the narrow passage dim even though it was still daytime. Their footsteps echoed softly against the stone walls.
Denzel kept his eyes on the ground.
The footprints were clear here.
One set.
Deep enough to show the person had been moving quickly.
He crouched beside the nearest one.
The edges were still sharp.
Fresh.
The Knight stopped beside him.
"You said someone came from the bell tower."
"I did."
She looked toward the end of the alley.
"Then why would they leave a trail?"
Denzel stood.
"That’s what I want to know."
He continued forward.
The footprints appeared every few meters, sometimes disappearing beneath patches of dirt before returning again.
Whoever had made them hadn’t bothered to hide them.
That bothered Denzel more than if they’d been concealed.
’Too obvious.’
He reached the end of the alley.
The stone marker stood there.
The carved bell was old and weathered, but there was something beneath it Denzel hadn’t noticed before.
A thin metal ring.
He crouched and pulled it.
Nothing happened.
The Knight looked down.
"Is that supposed to do something?"
"Probably."
Denzel pulled harder.
Click.
A section of stone shifted.
The Knight’s expression changed.
"You found a door."
"Apparently."
Denzel pushed the stone aside.
A narrow passage opened behind it.
Cold air drifted out.
The Knight looked into the darkness.
"That wasn’t on any map."
"You checked a map?"
"I like knowing where I’m going."
Denzel glanced at her.
"You followed me into an abandoned building without asking where we were going."
"That was different."
"How?"
She paused.
"I trusted you."
Denzel looked at her for a moment.
Then turned back toward the passage.
"That’s a dangerous habit."
He stepped inside.
The Knight followed.
The stone shifted back behind them with a heavy scrape.
Darkness swallowed the alley.
Denzel stopped.
He waited for his eyes to adjust.
A faint light flickered somewhere ahead.
Not sunlight.
Fire.
Someone had lit a torch.
Recently.
The Knight noticed it too.
"Someone’s down there."
Denzel nodded.
"Yeah."
He moved forward.
They hadn’t walked more than twenty steps when Denzel noticed another mark on the wall.
The same symbol.
Three lines through a circle.
He touched it.
Still warm.
The Knight leaned closer.
"They’re marking the path."
Denzel looked ahead.
"And they want us to follow it."
She frowned.
"Which means it could be a trap."
Denzel started walking again.
"Most likely."
"And you’re still going?"
"Of course."
She sighed and followed.
Beat 2 — The Person Waiting Below
The passage opened into a small underground chamber.
Denzel stopped at the entrance.
The room was empty.
A single torch burned against the far wall.
Beneath it stood a wooden table.
On the table was another parchment.
The Knight looked around.
"No one."
Denzel didn’t answer.
He studied the room instead.
One entrance.
One exit.
No windows.
No obvious hiding places.
He stepped inside.
The Knight remained near the entrance.
Denzel approached the table.
The parchment had his name written across the front.
Denzel.
His expression tightened.
’They knew I’d come.’
He picked it up.
The Knight moved closer.
"Open it."
Denzel unfolded the parchment.
Only one sentence had been written inside.
You’re closer to Sophia than you think.
Denzel stared at it.
The Knight read over his shoulder.
"That’s it?"
Denzel turned the parchment over.
Nothing.
He checked the edges.
Nothing.
Then—
A soft sound came from behind them.
Click.
The stone entrance closed.
The Knight spun around.
"Denzel."
He turned.
The passage was gone.
A solid stone wall now stood where they’d entered.
The torch flickered.
The Knight drew her weapon.
"We’re trapped."
Denzel looked back at the parchment.
Then at the dark corners of the chamber.
"No."
She frowned.
"No?"
Denzel slowly folded the parchment.
"If they wanted us trapped, they wouldn’t have left the message."
A voice came from somewhere behind the torch.
"You’re learning."
Denzel’s eyes snapped toward it.
The flame suddenly went out.
Darkness filled the chamber.
The Knight raised her weapon.
"Show yourself."
A quiet laugh answered her.
Then footsteps sounded from the darkness.
One.
Two.
Three.
Someone was walking toward them.
Denzel didn’t move.
His hand tightened around Sophia’s pendant.
The footsteps stopped.
A figure stepped into the faint light coming from the cracks around the sealed entrance.
Denzel’s eyes narrowed.
The stranger was wearing a dark cloak.
Their face remained hidden beneath the hood.
But one thing was visible.
A silver pendant hanging around their neck.
The same symbol as Sophia’s.
The Knight’s voice hardened.
"Who are you?"
The stranger looked directly at Denzel.
"Someone who was waiting for you."
The stranger took another step forward.
The faint light from the sealed entrance caught the edge of his hood, but not enough to reveal his face.
Denzel didn’t move.
Neither did the Knight.
His eyes remained on the silver pendant hanging from the stranger’s neck.
Same symbol.
Same design.
But unlike Sophia’s, this one wasn’t stained with blood.
The Knight tightened her grip on her weapon.
"Where is Sophia?"
The stranger didn’t answer.
Instead, his attention shifted to Denzel.
"You found her pendant."
Denzel’s expression remained calm.
"You left it."
A pause.
"Yes."
"Why?"
The stranger tilted his head slightly.
"Because you needed to know she was alive."
The Knight’s eyes narrowed.
"Alive?"
Denzel caught the word immediately.
"You’re saying she is?"
The stranger’s gaze returned to him.
"For now."
The Knight took a step forward.
"What does that mean?"
The stranger looked at her for the first time.
"It means you should be careful what questions you ask."
Her weapon lifted slightly.
"I’ll decide what I ask."
Denzel raised a hand.
"Wait."
The Knight glanced at him.
Denzel studied the stranger.
His posture was relaxed.
Too relaxed.
He wasn’t preparing to fight.
He wasn’t trying to escape.
He had brought them here deliberately.
Which meant the conversation was the point.
Denzel slipped Sophia’s pendant back into his coat.
"Why bring us here?"
"I didn’t bring you here."
The stranger gestured toward the parchment in Denzel’s hand.
"She did."
Denzel looked down at the message.
’ Sophia.’
The stranger continued.
"She knew you would come looking for her."
"How?"
"Because she knows you."
Denzel’s eyes narrowed.
"Not well enough to know I’d follow a trail this obvious."
A faint smile appeared beneath the hood.
"She didn’t need to."
The stranger stepped closer.
"She only needed to leave something you couldn’t ignore."
Denzel’s hand tightened around the parchment.
The pendant.
The blood.
The message.
It had all been deliberate.
"Where is she?"
The stranger’s smile disappeared.
"That depends on what you do next."
The Knight’s expression hardened.
"Stop speaking in riddles."
"I’m not."
The stranger looked at Denzel.
"There are people searching for Sophia."
Denzel’s eyes sharpened.
"Who?"
"People who won’t stop when they find her."
"Why are they looking for her?"
The stranger hesitated.
Then—
"Because Sophia knows something she was never supposed to learn."
Silence filled the chamber.
Denzel stared at him.
"What?"
The stranger stepped back toward the darkness.
"That’s what you need to find out."
The torch suddenly flared back to life.
Denzel blinked.
The stranger was gone.
Only his pendant remained on the floor.
The Knight looked around the chamber.
"He disappeared."
Denzel crouched and picked up the pendant.
His expression tightened.
"No."
He turned it over.
A single word had been engraved on the back.
Eldoria.
Denzel stared at it.
’What the hell is Eldoria?’
Denzel stared at the word.
Eldoria.
He turned the pendant over again, as if the letters might change.
They didn’t.
The Knight stepped closer.
"Eldoria?"
"Apparently."
"You know what it is?"
Denzel shook his head.
"No."
She frowned.
"Then why do you look like you’ve seen it before?"
"I haven’t."
He slipped the pendant into his coat.
"But I’ve heard the name."
The Knight waited.
Denzel’s eyes moved toward the sealed entrance.
"Once."
"From who?"
Denzel didn’t answer immediately.
A memory surfaced.
An old conversation.
A name mentioned briefly.
Then dismissed.
He hadn’t thought about it in years.
’Sophia.’
His expression hardened.
The Knight noticed.
"You remembered something."
"Maybe."
Denzel walked toward the stone wall and pressed his palm against it.
Nothing.
He examined the edges.
No mechanism.
No handle.
The Knight looked around the chamber.
"So we’re trapped."
Denzel shook his head.
"No."
"You’re very confident for someone standing in a room with no exit."
Denzel looked at the parchment.
The stranger’s message was still there.
You’re closer to Sophia than you think.
He read it again.
Then his eyes moved toward the floor.
The room was too deliberate.
One table.
One torch.
One parchment.
One pendant.
A message.
Everything had been placed exactly where they would find it.
But there was one thing that didn’t fit.
Denzel crouched.
The Knight followed his gaze.
"What?"
He pointed beneath the table.
A thin line had been carved into the stone floor.
Almost invisible beneath the dust.
Denzel brushed his hand across it.
The dust moved.
A rectangular outline appeared.
The Knight’s eyes widened.
"Another hidden door."
Denzel pressed against the center.
Nothing.
He tried the edge.
Still nothing.
Then he remembered the pendant.
He pulled it from his coat.
The symbol on its face matched the marking on the floor.
Denzel placed it against the center.
Click.
The stone shifted.
A narrow staircase appeared beneath them.
Cold air rushed upward.
The Knight stared into the darkness.
"That wasn’t there before."
"It was."
Denzel pocketed the pendant.
"We just didn’t know how to open it."
She looked down the stairs.
"Where does it lead?"
Denzel took the first step.
"I don’t know."
"You’re still going down?"
He glanced back.
"Sophia left the trail."
The Knight sighed and followed.
They descended into darkness.
Behind them, the stone door slowly closed.
Neither noticed the faint symbol glowing on the wall.
Three lines through a circle.
And beneath it, written in fresh red paint, were four words.
She is waiting below.
