Chapter 400 - 375: The Past of Paradise Island
While Shen Feng drew their fire from the front, Witch Tower had already crept up from behind and taken out the Purifier Leader and his men in one fell swoop.
Seeing Shen Feng step onto the platform, Witch Tower finally loosened her grip on the longbow, releasing the Purifier Leader from the brink of suffocation.
The Purifier Leader clutched his throat, gasping desperately for air, only to be kicked to the ground by Shen Feng, who then pinned him by stepping forcefully on his neck. He was pinned to the ground like a helpless chick.
The Purifier Leader’s face and body were now covered in dirt, stripped of his previous noble and magnificent air. His robe, which had appeared to be embroidered with an eye, was now revealed for what it was: a tattered plastic sheet with an eye drawn on it in grease.
Now, the Purifier Leader looked like nothing more than a pathetic clown.
Shen Feng said, his face devoid of expression:
"Your name."
With his face pressed into the dirt, the Purifier Leader couldn’t even get a clear look at Shen Feng, but his words were defiant:
"Blasphemers! You destroyed Heaven! You destroyed the Divine Realm! You will face the punishment of my god! You will be purified along with this world, torn to shreds!"
Shen Feng remained expressionless. He simply lifted his foot and brought it down on the man’s fingers. With a sudden application of force, a sharp CRUNCH of breaking bones echoed.
It sounded like a potato chip being crushed.
"AHHHHH—" A blood-curdling scream erupted from the Purifier Leader. ’This man is so brutal!’ he thought, horrified.
Witch Tower, standing to the side, frowned slightly.
Though she knew these Purifiers deserved it, she was still unaccustomed to torture and torment.
She much preferred putting an arrow through her enemy’s chest.
Hearing the man’s screams, Shen Feng felt not a single ripple of emotion.
He felt no pity for scum who wanted to destroy the entire world. High-intensity interrogation had become second nature to him, and crushing finger bones was merely the beginning.
"Your name," Shen Feng repeated coldly, applying more pressure with his foot. This time, he completely flattened the already-shattered finger bones, causing the Purifier Leader to writhe in agony like a maggot.
"Eddy... Ba... Bagot..." Eddy Bagot stammered, tears and snot streaming down his face from the pain. He was on the verge of passing out.
Perhaps he was once an unyielding warrior, a devout follower of the Whispering God. But his long life in "Heaven" had eroded his will, leaving it too weak to withstand this level of interrogation.
Shen Feng nodded slightly. ’Now that he’s given up his name, he’ll tell me everything.’
Interrogation was just that simple. Once you created a crack, everything would pour out.
He then hauled Eddy Bagot up by the collar and climbed back down with him to the "ground."
Just as they landed, a series of heavy THUDS sounded out as several bodies slammed onto the ground beside him.
It was the Purifiers Witch Tower had shot through the chest earlier. They hadn’t been quite dead, so she had thrown them from the platform above to finish the job. Now they couldn’t be any deader.
Witch Tower then landed gracefully beside Shen Feng, longbow in hand, scanning their surroundings and remaining on alert.
Seeing how ruthless both the man and the woman were, Eddy Bagot didn’t dare make a single rash move.
Shen Feng dragged him over to where the Quantum Force Field Core had been, threw him on the ground, and demanded:
"Where did this Quantum Force Field come from? Why is trash from the Purification Society here? What exactly is the Fog Sea? Is this the ancient battlefield where the World Beast and the human fleet fought?"
Eddy Bagot instantly realized where he was. Understanding this was the origin point of all their miracles, he was ecstatic. He cradled his hand and quickly imagined the wound healing.
The hand whose bones had been crushed began to rapidly mend, and in the blink of an eye, it was as good as new.
Seeing that the man wasn’t answering, Shen Feng dragged him out of the area covered by the Quantum Force Field’s origin point and stomped on his hand again. A crisp CRUNCH, CRUNCH rang out as the newly healed wound and bones were pulverized once more.
Eddy Bagot let out a miserable howl. He tried desperately to crawl back into the core area, which was about one square meter, but Shen Feng pinned him with a foot on his back, rendering him immobile.
The sacred place that could heal his wounds and erase the pain was right before his eyes, yet he couldn’t reach it. This form of torture was even worse than the pain itself. Eddy finally broke.
"I’ll talk! I’ll tell you everything! I’ll tell you everything! Just don’t hurt me!"
Shen Feng couldn’t help but sneer. ’These members of the Purification Church are even weaker than their predecessors in the Purification Society. A little bit of interrogation and they spill everything.’
At this point, Eddy had completely accepted his defeat. Like beans spilling from a bamboo tube, he poured out every detail he knew.
According to him, they were just a branch of the Purification Church. They had stumbled upon this island by accident after getting lost in the Fog Sea. At the time, their ship was on the verge of falling apart.
Originally, there was nothing on the island. It was just a bleak, gray reef with little more than some seaweed and oysters.
And, of course, the wreckage of an aircraft carrier that had been inexplicably abandoned on the reef.
But they had been lost at sea for so long that their food had run out. They couldn’t afford to be picky, so they desperately searched the reef for anything to eat.
They paid special attention to the aircraft carrier wreck, desperately hoping to salvage something useful from within.
Unexpectedly, while searching for food, a Purifier stumbled into a compartment and discovered a large stash of provisions inside, including canned goods and other items from the pre-war Human World, most of which were still edible.
The Purifier ate his fill in the compartment before calling the others.
However, when the others arrived, they found only broken parts and garbage in the compartment. There were no canned goods or anything of the sort that the Purifier had described.
At first, everyone thought the man had been hallucinating from extreme hunger, but then more and more people began reporting finding food in certain compartments.
As the leader of these Purifiers, Eddy made a series of deductions. After finding food himself, he finally uncovered the island’s secret.
Here, as long as one’s imagination was strong enough, whatever you wished for would come true!
This place was a true Heaven, a pure land bestowed upon them by their god!
Eddy later discovered that this dream world, created by the island’s wondrous force field, had its drawbacks.
First, too many observers could easily cause the dreams to revert to their cruel, true forms. Conversely, if one closed their eyes, everything became better.
Thus, at Eddy’s urging, many of the Purifiers blinded themselves, all for the sake of enjoying the wonders of Heaven.
At the same time, Eddy also found that an individual’s imagination was far less substantial and realistic than a collective one.
So, under his guidance, the Purifiers became a precision machine of imagination, collectively using their minds to create this Heaven-like existence.
Day after day, they lived here for many years, eventually coming to truly believe that all of this was their own creation and that they themselves were god-like beings.
Occasionally, other lost travelers would stumble upon the island. They were all subdued by the Purifiers and completely awed by what they found, willingly becoming their servants just to stay a few more days.
The so-called Ghost Thief Group was mostly comprised of these subjugated wanderers.
Over several years, using the Ghost Thieves as tools to spread their influence, Eddy even built this place into a renowned seat of the Purification Church.
And they had come to see themselves as gods, beings to be worshipped by foolish mortals.
Until Shen Feng appeared with his Sail Warship.
At this point, Eddy suddenly looked up at Shen Feng and said with a smile:
"Blasphemer, there’s no need to be smug. Having lived here for so long, I’ve discovered an earth-shattering secret, and I don’t mind telling you."
A cunning glint flashed in his eyes, along with a triumphant expression, as if victory was already in his grasp:
"We humble Purifiers may not be Divine Spirits, but a Divine Spirit does exist on this island. Or rather, the island *is* the Divine Spirit! And you Blasphemers will be purified by it!"
As he spoke, he pointed downward with a strange expression on his face.
