Chapter 381 - 356: Facing Death with Equanimity
RAT-A-TAT-TAT-A-TAT-A-TAT...
A dense burst of gunfire erupted as a tongue of fire shot out. Like a crimson scythe, the powerful heavy machine gun bullets instantly sliced a line of Ghost Thieves clean in two at the waist as they climbed the chain!
Just moments before, the Ghost Thieves had been scrambling desperately upward, their faces contorted with greed. Now, their expressions twisted into agony. Some were shot in the head before they could even react. Others had their entrails spill from their severed torsos onto the sea’s surface, yet their hands still clung reflexively to the chain as they let out bloodcurdling screams!
Worse still, some whose bodies were torn in half fell into the water but didn’t die immediately. They thrashed desperately on the surface as their blood dyed the sea red, like living chunks of flesh.
The heavy machine gun, however, showed no signs of stopping. The muzzle lifted and aimed directly at a Ghost Pirate Ship.
The power of the large-caliber bullets was immense. Each impact sent wood splinters flying, punching hole after hole. The barrage even tore one Ghost Pirate Ship in two, its hull buckling violently upward in the middle before both ends began to sink!
"Fire! Fire!" the Ghost Pirate Captain roared, his eyes bloodshot.
The terrifying power of the heavy machine gun didn’t frighten him. Instead, it stoked the flames of his greed.
This vessel was a legendary treasure ship!
He had to have this ship!
With these powerful weapons alone, he would be invincible!
As he shouted, the Ghost Pirate Captain leaped from the chain onto the outer hull of the Sail Warship. He plunged his dagger into a metal groove on the ship’s exterior, placing himself in the machine gun’s blind spot.
At the same time, he raised his double-barreled shotgun and pulled the trigger, aiming for Shen Feng.
Seeing this, the remaining dozen or so Ghost Pirates immediately followed suit. They all leaped onto the outer hull, desperately clinging to any protrusion they could find.
A few of them failed to get a firm grip and fell screaming into the water.
Shen Feng couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow at the sight.
’These guys are pretty clever.’
’But the farce ends here.’
He walked over to a nearby Close Defense Cannon, pushed it forward on its slide rail, then angled the barrel downward until the muzzle was aimed at the hull below.
Oil tankers and cargo ships in the Middle East Region are frequently attacked by pirates when passing through the Aden Bay and Oman Bay into the Arabian Sea.
Pirate ships are small, light, and extremely fast. Once they get close to a large vessel and enter its firing blind spots, it’s easy for them to board and engage in close-quarters combat.
These vicious pirates are far superior in close combat to ship guards, who tend to value their lives a bit more.
Therefore, oil nobles like Abdullah, who made their fortunes from petroleum, came to despise the very phrase "firing blind spot." This led them to commission some rather bizarre weapon designs.
This type of small Close Defense Cannon, which could be angled downward, was one such invention.
In his efforts to please the Commander, Abdullah had equipped this Sail Warship with a few of these contraptions.
Seeing the dark, gaping muzzle that had suddenly appeared above them, the Ghost Thieves clinging to the hull couldn’t help but reveal looks of utter despair.
They desperately wished this was all just a bad dream, or that the young man above was just bluffing.
But in the next instant, with a loud "BOOM," a shell from the Close Defense Cannon fired, instantly turning three Ghost Thieves in its path into a shower of blood and gore!
The sheer impact force was so immense that it tore their bodies to shreds without the shell even needing to detonate!
BOOM! An explosion erupted from the water’s surface; the shell only detonated the moment it hit the sea, throwing up a massive plume of water.
The display of immense power instantly silenced the Floating Island Market, which moments before had been filled with the clamor of battle and screams.
Everyone—those fighting, fleeing, and screaming—all turned in unison to stare at the Sail Warship, at the Close Defense Cannon before Shen Feng, and at the spot where three men had just been vaporized into a bloody mist.
As people born and raised in the world of the Lost Civilization, they had never imagined that a weapon of such immense power could exist!
BOOM! With another blast, two more Ghost Thieves clinging to the hull were blown into a red mist that dissipated into the sea.
The stunned crowd snapped back to reality, only now noticing the expressionless young man on the deck of the Sail Warship meticulously adjusting the cannon’s muzzle and continuing to fire.
His expression was cold and focused, as if he were merely swatting mosquitoes.
BOOM!
BOOM!
BOOM!
BOOM!
Each blast obliterated one or more Ghost Thieves, turning them into a gory pulp.
In the fleeting moments before the bloody pulp dispersed, the horrified onlookers could even make out shattered bones, shredded organs, and the glint of gold teeth.
As this horrifying scene replayed over and over, the few remaining Ghost Thieves finally broke. Their hands went limp, and they fell from the outer hull into the blood-red seawater below.
"Help! Help!"
"Don’t kill us! Don’t kill us!"
"I don’t want to die!"
After falling into the sea, they began to scream desperately, swimming toward their damaged Ghost Pirate Ships as if that could somehow save them.
Just then, the water began to churn violently.
In the next instant, a massive figure leaped from the depths. Its gaping maw clamped down on a Ghost Thief swimming in the bloody water, and it dragged him under.
"Sharks!"
"It’s a shiver of sharks!"
"AHHH—"
Bloodcurdling screams echoed across the water. The scent of blood and flesh scattered in the sea had been too strong; it had attracted a nearby shiver of sharks.
Dorsal fins, stained like crimson flags, sliced through the water’s surface, forming straight lines as they charged toward the pirates in the water.
The dozens of Ghost Thieves in the water had instantly become the sharks’ prey!
"Tsk, tsk." Seeing a shark bite off half of a Ghost Thief’s shoulder, Shen Feng clicked his tongue and narrowed his eyes.
’So much blood. Truly, it’s just so bloody. A little scary, even.’
The screams from the water were incessant. The Ghost Thieves could think of nothing else, and many began desperately shouting for help to the residents of the Floating Island Market on the shore.
However, while the residents—who had just suffered heavy casualties themselves—showed looks of pity, they all remained rooted to the spot, making no move to help.
Mercy for the Ghost Thieves was cruelty to themselves.
The deeds of these scumbags had long ago stripped them of their humanity.
Residents and merchants who had been hiding all over the Floating Island Market began to emerge, gathering at the pier to silently watch the Ghost Thieves being torn apart by the sharks.
Some of the younger boys and girls couldn’t bear to watch and tried to turn away, but their elders stopped them, forcing them to continue watching while teaching them the most fundamental truth of survival in this world:
If it weren’t the vicious Ghost Thieves being torn apart right now, it would be them.
Two Ghost Pirate Ships remained intact, but the dozens of pirates aboard them dared not move. They knelt on their decks, trembling as they stared at Shen Feng on the Sail Warship.
Even as their comrades in the water screamed for help, they remained frozen, terrified that the slightest movement would anger the god of death before them and they would be the next ones turned into a bloody pulp.
The Ghost Pirate Captain’s face was ashen. He clung desperately to a crevice on the Sail Warship’s outer hull, completely motionless.
’Getting blasted into a bloody pulp is one thing, but being torn to shreds by sharks... that would be too horrible a death.’
He then looked up at Shen Feng on the deck and shouted:
"Kill me!"
Shen Feng snorted coldly. He threw out a noose, which instantly tightened around the Ghost Pirate Captain’s neck. With a sharp tug, Shen Feng yanked him off the hull, sending him plunging toward the sea below!
The Ghost Pirate Captain’s eyes went wide with terror as he watched himself fall toward the sharks’ waiting jaws. His body trembled, all his earlier bravado completely gone.
Just as his feet were about to touch the water, a powerful force yanked the rope taut. The Ghost Pirate Captain went soaring upward as Shen Feng hauled him onto the deck with a pulley, where he landed with a heavy THUD like a dead fish.
Watching the Ghost Pirate Captain curled up in a ball and shaking like a leaf, Shen Feng let out a wry chuckle.
’So much for facing death with courage.’
