True Apocalypse Game

Chapter 306 - 287: I, Cthulhu

The Purifiers in the room instantly grew solemn. Some of their eyes filled with rapturous reverence, and a few were even moved to tears.

Though most of them had never heard the Whisperer’s voice before, the moment it spoke, they knew. This was the voice of the Whispering God they revered, the Master of Destruction!

The voice of an eternal being!

The Whisperer was actually speaking to them directly?!

The significance of this moment was immense. It was the highlight of their lives, the very glory they had striven for.

But what shocked the Purifiers even more than the contact itself was the content of the message.

Cthulhu had completely vanished and was presumed dead!

The mysterious and powerful President of the Purification Society—a figure second only to the Whisperer in their hearts, a god in his own right—was dead. Just like that.

It seemed like a cruel joke.

But this was clearly the voice of the Whisperer. No confirmation was needed. The moment it spoke, a tremor ran through every Purifier, a thrumming they felt in the depths of their souls.

That vibration carried with it an infinite reverence for the Whispering God, an adoration that felt as if it were encoded in their very genes.

It was undeniable. Irrefutable.

This was the divine sound of destruction.

Brendan and Ivanovic exchanged a look. They saw shock in each other’s eyes, but also a glint of greed and desire.

’Choose... a new Cthulhu!’

’Choose a new President of the Purification Society!’

’It seems Cthulhu isn’t a name, but a position acknowledged by the Whisperer!’

A position second only to the god, but above all others. A title for the Divine Apostle!

To become Cthulhu meant to receive the Whispering God’s absolute approval. It meant becoming the god’s mortal representative, wielding the immense wealth and power of the entire Purification Society.

This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

But the two men only shared a single glance before saying nothing more.

They both understood that in the presence of the Whisperer, this Divine Spirit, the thoughts of a mere mortal were utterly irrelevant.

They could change nothing. They didn’t even dare to offer a suggestion or make a plea. All they could do was silently await the Whisperer’s decision.

’Who would be so fortunate as to become the new Cthulhu?’

They also understood that at this very moment, every Purifier across the globe must be listening to the Whisperer’s divine oracle, awaiting the final selection.

Wherever they were, the god’s will was absolute.

The white noise continued to hum. Everyone held their breath, awaiting the Whisperer’s judgment. A sublime sense of divinity washed over them, as if they were in Heaven itself, standing attendance on the Whispering God, their hearts filled with infinite serenity.

"...Ivanovic..." The Whisperer’s voice returned, this time speaking a name directly.

Ivanovic’s head snapped up. A tremor ran through his body as he answered in a low voice:

"Yes..."

"...Ivanovic... the new Cthulhu... bring the Sea Beast into the Abyss..." The Whisperer’s voice spoke once more, then fell completely silent.

The white noise on everyone’s phones vanished abruptly, as if nothing had happened at all, as if the Whisperer had never delivered any message.

Ivanovic stood there dazedly, phone in hand, his mind a complete blank and his eyes vacant.

But when the other Purifiers in the room looked up at him, their eyes were filled with a light of adoration and awe.

The voice of the Whisperer was the ultimate affirmation, a brand upon their minds, deeply searing the decision of Ivanovic’s succession as Cthulhu into the consciousness of every listener.

Ivanovic himself was the most shocked of all.

He had never imagined he would become the President of the Purification Society, the new Cthulhu!

It all felt like a dream.

But this was the Whisperer’s decision, and no one could object—not even him.

For a moment, he didn’t know whether to be confused, bewildered, or overjoyed.

Just then, Brendan sighed, unable to hide the envy in his eyes. He walked up to Ivanovic, thumped his chest with one fist, and dropped to one knee. He bowed his head deeply to the man who had, moments ago, been his ally and subordinate.

"I, Brendan, pledge to follow President Cthulhu!"

’I never thought the Whisperer would personally appoint Ivanovic as the new President.’

’Then again, it wasn’t entirely unexpected.’

’President Cthulhu was dead, and Vice President Cheney was dead as well. Of the hundreds of branches in the Purification Society, only Cthulhu’s direct lineage and their own faction held the most power. Cthulhu’s line was likely wiped out completely, which meant it was now their faction’s turn.’

’And Brendan had just made a deal with Ivanovic to become the leader of this very faction. Therefore, Ivanovic, as a capable and powerful member in his own right, had ironically become the best candidate.’

’Brendan now finally understood how fortune and misfortune were intertwined.’

’If he hadn’t vied with Ivanovic for control and had let him become the faction’s leader instead, then perhaps the new Cthulhu would have been Brendan himself!’

’But it was too late for that now.’

Within the Purification Society, no one could defy the divine oracle of the Whisperer.

Anyone who dared would be immediately eliminated by the Purifiers at their side.

Seeing Brendan’s actions, the remaining Purifiers in the room came forward one by one to bow before Ivanovic.

Their gazes held both reverence and fear.

To all Purifiers, the Whisperer’s voice was a divine seal of approval. When Ivanovic was appointed the new Cthulhu by the Whisperer, he must have also received a portion of the god’s power.

"Cthulhu..."

"May the light of the Whispering God shine upon you, Cthulhu..."

"May destruction be with you, Cthulhu..."

One by one, the Purifiers in the hall knelt, gazing up at Ivanovic with profound reverence, as if they were beholding the Whispering God himself.

Ivanovic stood before the window. The last rays of the setting sun streamed in, illuminating his back and creating the illusion of wings made of light.

In the eyes of the Purifiers, it was as if Ivanovic had been touched by the Whisperer’s own divinity, deepening their reverence.

Ivanovic finally recovered from his shock and bewilderment. A cryptic smile spread across his face as he muttered to himself, "Cthulhu... Cthulhu... I have become Cthulhu..."

Then he raised the glass of amber whiskey and laughed heartily.

"HAHAHAHAHA! Everyone, may the light of the Whispering God shine eternal, and may destruction descend! I am Cthulhu!"
