Chapter 281 - 265: Injecting the Virus
The motorcycle’s engine roared. The tires were a bit flat, but at least it could still move.
Shen Feng twisted the throttle to the max, tearing through the ruined streets.
The ground all around him kept bursting open as wildly thrashing tentacles shot out, lashing at Shen Feng again and again.
Shen Feng swerved left and right, dodging the strikes. Deep gullies were gouged into the concrete wherever the tentacles landed.
’If one of those hits me, it’ll tear me in half!’
Shen Feng was now even more certain this "Destructive Shen Feng" meant him no good.
’I have to get out of here as fast as possible and get my trump card!’
Fortunately, his opponent had only just awakened and seemed unable to control the Transfer Tower and its tentacles with precision. The tentacles were also so immense that Shen Feng’s smaller size allowed him to slip through the gaps.
He navigated the narrow alleyways, even abandoning the motorcycle at a critical moment to sprint on foot, leaving the vehicle’s wreckage to be crushed and torn apart behind him as more gullies were gouged into the ground.
Finally, after he had covered seven or eight blocks, the Transfer Tower’s tentacles were gone.
After all, no matter how massive the Transfer Tower was, its reach had an end.
The tendrils’ range wasn’t that vast.
The Transfer Tower behind him seemed to fall silent, as if that "Destructive Shen Feng" had run out of options.
Shen Feng didn’t relax in the slightest. He found a pickup truck, started the engine, and sped off.
’The only one who knows me best is me.’
And he wasn’t one to give up so easily.
Sure enough, just as the pickup had covered some distance, a hum emanated from the direction of the Transfer Tower. Then, a massive Consciousness Field expanded rapidly, blanketing almost all of Mexico City!
The Consciousness Field pulsed with madness, destruction, greed, and cruelty as it issued a single command to all the zombies.
Hunt that human!
The zombies Shen Feng had just sped past froze in place. Low growls rumbled in their throats as they slowly raised their heads. A blackish-brown fluid—their remaining cerebrospinal fluid—streamed from their eyes.
Then, with frenzied roars, the zombies lunged at Shen Feng!
’Son of a bitch...’
Shen Feng slammed the accelerator to the floor. The cheap gasoline made the engine shudder and emit a series of pops, but he couldn’t worry about that now.
The pickup shot forward, mowing down the oncoming zombies and leaving the ones behind in its dust.
Fortunately, the zombies had only just fallen under the Consciousness Field’s control. Their movements were still sluggish, so they didn’t completely block his path.
At the same time, Shen Feng’s Silicon-Based Brain released a powerful electromagnetic wave, simulating Destructive Shen Feng’s Consciousness Field to issue a new command to the surrounding zombies:
Leave! Get lost!
The lunging zombies were momentarily confused. Their low, instinct-driven intelligence couldn’t process the conflicting commands.
This gave Shen Feng a moment’s respite to push forward. He could already see the private hospital where this all began!
Behind him, the massive Transfer Tower in Mexico City began to squirm. The huge tentacles buried deep underground started to pull free, looking to uproot themselves entirely and hunt Shen Feng like a colossal beast!
"You can’t escape! I’m the only one who truly knows you! You will merge with me and become the real me!" the giant face of Destructive Shen Feng on the Transfer Tower roared.
The pretense was over. This was now a fight to the death!
The Consciousness Field intensified again. It seemed Destructive Shen Feng’s main body, far away in Asia, had transmitted more of its consciousness, even leveraging the global network of Transfer Towers to boost the power of the one in Mexico City.
The zombies in Mexico City let out frenzied shrieks. Their bodies began to melt and deform, fangs jutted out, and their eyes glowed with a terrifying light as they charged at Shen Feng once more.
On the outskirts of Mexico City, zombies began to gather, forming a tide of corpses to block Shen Feng’s escape.
In the blink of an eye, a massive encirclement had formed within Mexico City, cutting off any chance of escape.
Shen Feng didn’t reply. With a grim expression, he kept the accelerator floored, racing toward the private hospital.
His goal had never been to escape.
SCREECH— The pickup slammed to a halt. Shen Feng leaped out and sprinted into the nearby hospital.
His Silicon-Based Brain was in overdrive, simulating Destructive Shen Feng’s Consciousness Field to keep the surrounding zombies at bay.
The tide of zombies could only swarm outside the hospital, effectively crashing as they tried to process the two contradictory commands.
Shen Feng raced to the hospital’s virology lab, only to find the main door sealed shut.
With no time to waste, he petrified the surface of his body and slammed into the lab door with all his might.
BANG! "Oof—" "Agh—"
The door burst open, followed by two pained cries.
Shen Feng got to his feet and saw Reyes and Colin on the floor, staring up at him with bewildered expressions.
After splitting up with Shen Feng, the two had discovered that the zombies in Mexico City had all fallen into a stupor. They seized the opportunity to hurry to the hospital Shen Feng had told them about.
They hadn’t been there long before the city’s entire zombie population had erupted into a frenzy again, scaring them out of their wits.
The sudden, powerful Consciousness Field, in particular, had made them feel as insignificant as specks of dust, nearly killing them with its terrifying despair.
The only thing they could do was bolt the virology lab door and brace it with their bodies.
They had been terrified by the sound of the horde roaring outside just moments ago, only to be sent flying by Shen Feng himself.
They had been grimacing in pain and terror, but the moment they saw it was Shen Feng, their expressions turned to joyous surprise. They scrambled to their feet and said:
"Mr. Shen! You... We didn’t expect you to get here so fast!"
From the looks on their faces, they were one step away from throwing themselves at Shen Feng and bawling their eyes out.
The rampaging horde of zombies outside was just too damn terrifying!
Shen Feng nodded, shut and bolted the door again, then said to the two of them:
"Get into hazmat suits, now. Follow me to the isolation chamber."
There was no time for explanations. The zombies had sealed off all of Mexico City. Even if he could simulate Destructive Shen Feng’s Consciousness Field, he couldn’t keep it up for long.
The Transfer Tower was heading this way. Once it arrived, it would be too late.
He had to get the final, perfected virus as soon as possible!
’I hope there’s enough time...’
Reyes and Colin quickly changed into their hazmat suits and followed Shen Feng into the virology lab’s isolation chamber.
The petri dishes and the various pieces of equipment Shen Feng had set up before he left were still running.
Shen Feng took a deep breath. He knew this was precisely the time he couldn’t afford to rush. He took out a few samples and began observing them under a microscope.
The zombies outside were currently held back by his simulated Consciousness Field, but the powerful field from the Transfer Tower was growing more and more frantic. Soon, he wouldn’t be able to suppress them at all.
Shen Feng had the original version of the Stone Statue Virus on hand. It was effective, but if he used it, all the remaining survivors in this world would also be turned into stone statues.
At that point, he would have personally erased this world’s human civilization.
Besides, a world filled with stone statues might just attract that "One Is a Trillion, a Trillion Is One" entity.
He had to get the most optimized version of the virus!
He quickly went through the samples one by one. In most of them, the Stone Statue Virus and the Evil Spirit Virus showed no change, or had simply died off completely.
In a few others, the Stone Statue Virus had become more aggressive, completely consuming the Evil Spirit Virus.
Finally, after examining dozens of samples, Shen Feng found two that were relatively ideal.
In one, the Stone Statue Virus had mutated slightly, devouring most of the Evil Spirit Virus in the sample but leaving a small amount behind. It also had some effect on human blood.
The other had devoured the Evil Spirit Virus completely and showed no reaction to human blood. It seemed perfect.
BOOM...
BOOM...
BOOM...
Heavy footfalls echoed from outside, like a giant from mythology on the march. Even the hospital itself trembled.
Along with the tremors came the chaotic roars of the zombies.
Reyes and Colin were pale with fright.
Though they couldn’t see what was happening outside, they knew it couldn’t be good.
The invisible Consciousness Field felt like it was about to tear their minds apart, leaving them trembling.
Shen Feng had no time for purification. He drew a sample of the first virus into a syringe, readied the Stone Statue Virus Healing Potion, and said to Reyes:
"I’m going to inject you with a virus. Don’t worry, I have the Healing Potion right here. I can cure any adverse reactions immediately... All you need to know is that this virus can stop the zombies. Now, give me your arm."
Reyes froze. He finally understood what Shen Feng had meant by "helping out."
He’d thought they were just going to assist Mr. Shen, not become human test subjects!
One look at the half-flesh, half-stone monsters in the lab was enough to know this virus was terrifying.
Just then, Shen Feng glanced at him and continued speaking:
"Remember, what we’re doing right now is for the sake of saving this world’s human civilization."
Hearing this, Reyes gritted his teeth, tore off his hazmat suit, and exposed his arm.
’Death is coming one way or another,’ he thought. ’If I can die for something meaningful to human civilization, it’s better than being torn to shreds by zombies for nothing.’
Shen Feng nodded slightly and injected the first virus into Reyes’s arm.
