True Apocalypse Game

Chapter 262 - 248: The Burning Skyscraper

The one dragged in was another zombie in a nurse’s uniform. Shen Feng grabbed the nurse zombie by both wrists and, using the same method as before, secured her firmly to the experiment bed.

Then, he resumed his experiments.

The virus lab was well-stocked with various supplies, including other virus and bacteria samples.

Although many had long since been ruined, some virus and bacteria samples stored in sealed culture mediums were still viable.

Shen Feng removed these samples and injected them one by one into the Stone Statue Virus culture medium, observing the resulting changes and reactions.

At the same time, he began preparing inducing agents to encourage the Stone Statue Virus to mutate.

While doing all this, he wore full protective gear and kept a Stone Statue Virus Healing Potion close at hand.

After all, the virus’s origin was unknown and it was incredibly active. If a powerful mutated strain were to emerge, it was possible that even he could get infected.

Although he had already injected himself with the Stone Statue Virus Healing Potion and had antibodies in his system, it was still best to be as cautious as possible when dealing with a virus created by some nameless, indescribable entity.

During this process, he also witnessed firsthand the power of the Stone Statue Virus.

Not only was its life force incredibly tenacious, but its offensive capabilities were so potent that other viruses and bacteria were like mere children before it.

Not a single one could put up a fight.

However, the virus itself had another characteristic: it only targeted humans.

Viral reproduction, iteration, and induced mutation is a very lengthy process. Even though the Stone Statue Virus was far more active than ordinary viruses, it still required a certain amount of time.

This was where the items Shen Feng had brought with him came in handy.

After setting up dozens of petri dishes and applying various types of inductive stimuli, Shen Feng used the cover of night to quietly open a window. He climbed out, carrying his weapons, and headed for the hospital’s first floor.

Outside, it was still pitch black. The faint roars of zombies echoed from the distance, rising and falling with a rhythm like a pack of wolves on the hunt. He had no idea what was happening over there.

After landing on the street, Shen Feng didn’t dare to linger. He slipped quietly back into the hospital and found the security guard’s room.

He pushed the door open and saw a zombie standing silently in the darkness, dormant.

Shen Feng moved in quickly, pressing the barrel of his gun between the zombie’s eyes. The instant it opened them, he pulled the trigger.

The zombie’s head exploded. Shen Feng grabbed its collar to prevent the thud of its body from attracting other zombies in the hospital, then gently lowered it to the floor.

He then quickly searched the security room in the darkness, finding a few newspapers on a desk, along with some ledgers and logbooks.

He also found a Shotgun, a handgun, and some ammunition.

This was a private hospital in Mexico City, after all. Security was a necessity, and they usually had more than two armed guards.

He examined the two guns. The Shotgun was a similar model to the one he had discarded, and the suppressor he’d kept could be attached to it.

Shen Feng took the Shotgun and all the ammunition, packed up the newspapers and books, and quickly left the security room. Now familiar with the route, he climbed back up the exterior wall and soon reached the floor of the virus lab.

Just then, a loud BOOM suddenly erupted from the distant darkness. A blaze of fire shot into the sky, followed by the RAT-A-TAT-TAT of gunfire, shattering the silence of Mexico City!

The fire originated from a high-rise building a dozen blocks away. A floor on the multi-story building was now burning fiercely, illuminating even Shen Feng’s street in the absolute darkness!

Shen Feng had heard that kind of explosion before; it was familiar.

Those were the sounds of grenades and RPGs!

It was followed by the faint, deep crack of gunfire—the muffled report of a Barrett sniper rifle.

In that building, people were in a firefight!

As for what they were fighting, the answer was obvious: zombies.

Their firepower was clearly plentiful. They had numerous heavy weapons, and there was obviously more than one person.

However, Shen Feng wasn’t optimistic about their chances.

’They’re trapped in that building. Even with all those weapons, how long can they last against a zombie siege?’

’It’s not just the zombies in that one building, either...’

On the street below Shen Feng, zombies that had been dormant in the darkness opened their eyes, let out frenzied roars, and began to sprint wildly toward the burning building!

From the surrounding buildings, including the very hospital Shen Feng was in, zombies smashed through windows and charged out. They crashed to the street below, becoming mangled messes of flesh and blood, only to stagger back to their feet and rush toward the building echoing with gunfire and explosions.

Looking into the distance, he could see countless shadowy figures in the darkness. Their eyes, like those of cats, reflected a terrifying light as they surged toward the building.

They were like a tide surging through the darkness.

Shen Feng was currently hanging from a fifth-floor windowsill of the hospital. The zombies, completely captivated by the distant sounds and light, hadn’t noticed him.

He held his breath, concentrating on concealing his presence.

Once most of the zombies on the street had run off, Shen Feng immediately vaulted back inside through the window.

After passing through the decontamination and isolation room, he returned to the lab’s culture room.

Setting down the items he was carrying, Shen Feng didn’t immediately examine the newspapers and books. Instead, he went to the window, took out a pair of binoculars, and looked toward the distant building.

By now, the middle section of the towering building was completely engulfed in flames, which were still creeping upward. The blaze illuminated the entire district.

The horde of zombies swarming below numbered in the tens of thousands. Like a swarm of tireless ants, they were climbing straight up the building’s exterior wall!

Furthermore, more and more zombies were gathering at the base of the building, climbing over one another. They formed a human tower, scaling the walls by creating a living pyramid!

The topmost zombies had already reached the building’s midpoint. Completely ignoring the pain, they crawled right into the burning section and continued to climb, their bodies engulfed in flames!

The sight sent a chill down even Shen Feng’s spine.

Zombies feel no pain. They have only one obsession: to devour humans. Their subtle mutations placed them squarely in the uncanny valley, making them creatures straight from a nightmare for any human.

BANG—

BOOM!

RAT-A-TAT-TAT...

The sounds of gunfire and explosions were incessant. Through his binoculars, Shen Feng saw several figures on the rooftop, firing continuously at the climbing zombies below.

These people were extremely well-equipped. They periodically tossed down grenades or fired rockets, instantly blasting away entire sections of zombies.

That sniper rifle, in particular, could dismember an entire line of zombies with a single shot.

But the sheer number of zombies was overwhelming. They were completely fearless—or rather, they lacked the very concept of fear—and continued to swarm upward like an ant colony.

Behind Shen Feng, the nurse zombie tied to the experiment bed began to struggle frantically, letting out low, guttural roars. It was clearly drawn by the sounds and light from outside.

Shen Feng immediately went over and tightly wrapped duct tape around the nurse zombie’s mouth, nose, and head, securing her firmly to the experiment bed. He made a "shushing" gesture and said:

"Quiet down. If you go out to climb that building now, you’ll just get burned, blown up, or shot. It’s too dangerous. It’s much better to live a few more days and let me be the one to kill you."

He then returned to the window and looked back toward the building.

He saw that the first few dozen climbing zombies were already approaching the rooftop!

These zombies had all climbed through the line of fire. Their skin was completely burned away, and they looked like Evil Ghosts crawling out of Purgatory, yet they still kept climbing.

Their strength was astonishing. Only occasionally would one fall; the vast majority clung to the building’s protrusions and climbed relentlessly, as if they would never tire.

Shen Feng had thought the people on the roof would eventually be consumed by the fire, but he hadn’t expected the zombie horde to reach them first.

The seven or eight people on the rooftop were still firing wildly. A white powder drifted across the roof, and the people were jumping about in a frenzy. Meanwhile, countless green bills were caught by the wind, scattering in all directions like a shower of falling leaves.

It seemed they knew they were at the end of their rope and had gone completely mad.

Shen Feng nodded. This aligned with his earlier assessment.

’In Mexico City, there’s only one kind of person who possesses heavy weaponry more advanced than the police.’

He just didn’t know how these people had managed to alert the zombies and get discovered.

The building catching fire was likely a contingency plan they had set up in advance.

More and more zombies climbed past the building’s burning section and reached the roof.

Finally, a few of the burning zombies scrambled over the edge and onto the rooftop, lunging at the survivors.

At first, they managed to kill these zombies, even throwing the burning corpses off the edge. But as more and more swarmed onto the roof, their weapons could no longer hold the line, and they were finally overwhelmed.

Shen Feng clicked his tongue, feeling a slight sense of pity for them.

’They were probably all Immune. Now they’re going to be eaten alive, torn to shreds by the zombies.’

Shen Feng turned to close the curtains, but just then, a massive fireball erupted from the rooftop. A moment later the colossal BOOM reached him. Severed limbs were blasted high into the air, scattering like confetti and raining back down along with a massive amount of US Dollars.

The severed limbs clearly belonged to both zombies and humans.

The survivors must have planted explosives in advance, choosing to take the zombies down with them at the very end.

He wondered if all those US Dollars had been amassed before the cataclysm or collected during the apocalypse.

Either way, it was all useless now. ’Perhaps it can buy their way in the afterlife...’

The entire top floor of the building had collapsed from the explosion. The fire below continued to rage upward, turning the high-rise into the most brilliant torch in all of Mexico City.

Just then, a rhythmic roar suddenly echoed from the direction of the building. It was a sound filled with rage and fury, as if infuriated by the humans’ desperate resistance.

Immediately, another roar answered in the distance. Then, similar roars rose and fell in a chorus, and emotion could be clearly heard in them!

Shen Feng’s expression tightened.

’Have these roaring zombies... developed consciousness!?’
