True Apocalypse Game

Chapter 260 - 246: Darkness and Light

But he didn’t relax in the slightest. He continued to wait. After about a dozen seconds, another flash of light appeared on that street before vanishing once more.

To the naked eye, the light was extremely clear in the darkness.

This time, however, its position was completely different, having moved forward by about a dozen meters.

He waited a little longer, and the light flashed again, its position having advanced once more.

Shen Feng waited for several minutes. The light flashed intermittently, eventually stopping in front of a certain building. Then, light began to flicker from time to time from within that building.

During the day, Shen Feng had observed that area with his binoculars. The building appeared to be a large supermarket.

The zombies’ activity lessened at night, and they clearly had no need for light.

The appearance of this light could only mean one thing.

There were still people alive.

Shen Feng couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief.

Humanity was truly more tenacious than cockroaches. He never thought that in a world already conquered by the Master of the Void, there would still be human survivors.

Of course, considering how the Evil Spirit Virus had spread, it was unlikely that anyone could have avoided infection.

The only explanation for those who survived was that they were Immune.

Only the naturally Immune could have survived such a terrifying viral outbreak.

Just then, a light flashed on another street in the dark Mexico City. This time, it seemed to be a much weaker flashlight beam. It didn’t disappear but remained on, heading in a specific direction.

There were multiple survivors.

These survivors clearly hid inside various buildings during the day, avoiding the period when the zombies were most active. They only ventured out at night to search for food or other necessities.

For these survivors, the Evil Spirit Virus outbreak had one benefit—perhaps its only one. The epidemic had exploded so quickly that the vast majority of people were infected before they could even react, leaving them no time to hoard or fight over supplies.

As a result, supermarkets and various shops were still stocked with plenty of supplies—enough for the few survivors to sustain themselves.

Mexico City had a population of twenty million. Even if only one in ten thousand were Immune, that would still leave over two thousand survivors.

There might also be people who hadn’t been infected in time.

After all, the viral spore mists would have had blind spots; they weren’t everywhere.

Perhaps others with night-vision goggles were also active in the dark, or maybe they were just huddled in their Shelters, not daring to take a single step outside.

Shen Feng put his night-vision goggles back on, returned to the elevator shaft the way he came, and grabbed a steel cable to begin his descent.

The streets he had seen the lights on were still far away, and he had no plans to seek out the survivors just yet. After all, he had more important things to do.

Just knowing that the flame of human civilization had not yet been extinguished was enough.

Of course, given the nature of his mission as an investigator, he would eventually have to make contact with these survivors to understand the situation.

After landing carefully, Shen Feng emerged from the darkness and stepped onto the street.

Through his night-vision goggles, he could see numerous figures standing inside the shops and buildings on both sides of the street.

They were zombies, one after another, all in a dormant state.

Holding a silenced pistol, Shen Feng quieted his breathing and softened his steps, moving at a steady pace through the darkness. He first came to a corner store, slipped through its shattered glass door, and began to search for provisions.

Inside the store, three zombies were in a dormant state. One of them was still wearing a clerk’s uniform.

He hadn’t disturbed them when he first entered. But after he took a few steps forward, the clerk zombie’s eyes snapped open. It was alerted. Without making a sound, it opened its foul-smelling mouth full of broken teeth and lunged at Shen Feng.

Expressionless, Shen Feng raised his gun, jammed it into the clerk’s mouth, and pulled the trigger.

PFFT! With a soft report, he headshot the clerk zombie.

The other two zombies woke up at the same time, but before they could even react, Shen Feng put a bullet through each of their brains with two precise shots.

After dealing with the zombies in the store, Shen Feng did a sweep of the premises, gun in hand. Once he confirmed there were no other zombies, he began searching for supplies.

Most people had mutated in an extremely short period, and the government had likely suppressed the news beforehand, so the vast majority of goods in the store were still on the shelves.

Judging from the state of decay of some of the food, the apocalypse in this Doomsday World had likely only begun a year or two ago.

Aside from fresh fruits and vegetables, almost all the vacuum-packed food was still edible.

Shen Feng quickly selected some instant foods like crackers, bread, and ramen, along with plenty of canned goods. He also grabbed a few bottles of whiskey and brandy, packing everything into a new backpack he found.

After a moment’s thought, he also grabbed a few comic books before leaving the store and continuing on his way through the darkness.

On his way to the private hospital, Shen Feng ducked in and out of roadside shops, grabbing some clothes here and other necessities there. He even picked up a Nintendo Switch handheld for entertainment.

’After all, this research would take quite a while; he had to be prepared for the long haul.’

The zombies on the street were all dormant. The few that were startled awake were quickly dispatched by Shen Feng without causing any major commotion.

Upon reaching the private hospital, he didn’t fight his way up through the building. Instead, he climbed straight up the exterior wall to the virus lab on the fifth floor.

He climbed through a window into the hallway, where a few more zombies were dormant. Stirred by his presence, they instantly awoke, roaring as they prepared to lunge.

Shen Feng immediately pulled open the defunct electronic door to the virus lab and rushed inside. After a quick sweep, he found no zombies within.

He immediately returned to the doorway, pulled the heavy metal door open just wide enough for one person, and abruptly grabbed a zombie’s arm, yanking it into the lab.

The zombies outside were blocked again before they had time to react.

The zombie Shen Feng had dragged in wore a pink nurse’s uniform and looked like a young girl. It immediately threw itself on him, biting and gnawing frantically, but only succeeded in chipping a few of its own teeth.

Shen Feng dragged the nurse zombie to the far end of the lab. He then pulled it off himself, pinned it to an examination table, and tied down its limbs.

Feeling the bite marks all over his neck, Shen Feng couldn’t help but wince in pain.

’Once I recover from the petrification, there are definitely going to be a few gashes here.’

The virus lab was pitch-black, filled with the ceaseless roars and struggles of the nurse zombie.

First, Shen Feng securely shut all the windows and drew the curtains.

Then, using information he had researched beforehand, he went to the power distribution system on the far wall and fiddled with it for a moment. He switched the lab’s power line from the utility company’s grid to the hospital’s own Solar power system. Then he took off his night-vision goggles and pressed a button.

The lab’s lights flickered on, bathing the room in brilliant white.

He couldn’t help but nod, satisfied.

’Looks like my homework paid off. This private hospital uses a Solar power module invented by the Musk Company as its backup power supply.’

’Those things are famously tough and reliable, and sure enough, it was still operational.’

There hadn’t been many people in the lab when the epidemic broke out, so the equipment was all in perfect condition, albeit covered in a layer of dust.

Shen Feng grabbed a cloth and wiped down several important analytical instruments. He then took the two glass vials he had purchased in Mexico City from his backpack.

One contained the Evil Spirit Virus, the other, the Stone Statue Virus.

Then, he raised his arm and spoke into his wristband:

"Investigation Report:

Beginning virus analysis experiment. Primary objectives are twofold:

1. Analyze the similarities and differences between the Evil Spirit Virus in this Doomsday World and the one from the original Doomsday World.

2. Analyze the effect of the Stone Statue Virus on zombies and determine if there is any antagonistic reaction with the Evil Spirit Virus."

He then approached the nurse zombie, used a scalpel to slice open the skin on her arm, and extracted a dark-red blood clot from a coagulated blood vessel.
