Chapter 249 - 238: Sudden Upheaval at Maple Leaf Castle
All he could see was a ravaged city and landscape, endless corpses, blazing fires, and billowing smoke.
And over it all, a darkness seemed to loom.
This darkness was formless and insubstantial, invisible to the naked eye, yet it appeared directly in one’s consciousness.
A single glance revealed a place shrouded in darkness, as if it had devoured everything.
And this darkness itself was an unnamable, indescribable, terrifying, and powerful consciousness, conveying only a single will—Destruction!
Destruction!
Death!
This was the ultimate fate of the Cosmos—unavoidable and inescapable.
All things must perish; only Death is eternal!
Just by gazing at the darkness through the eyes in the painting, through some method he could not yet explain, Shen Feng felt his consciousness teetering on the brink of madness. An uncontrollable urge to destroy everything surged within him.
Controlled by his subconscious, the Gray Tide converged around him. Sharp tentacles writhed like a giant, monstrous beast, enveloping him and taking aim at Joey, Martha, and the others.
’He wanted to kill!’
’Kill them all!’
"Shen Feng!" Jingwei’s voice instantly echoed in his mind, startling him.
She then took direct control of his body via the Silicon-Based Brain, snapping him out of his frenzy. He struggled to turn his head away, temporarily breaking eye contact with the eyes in the painting.
The violent sensation receded in an instant, like a tide, and Shen Feng’s mind became clear once more.
He frowned at the painting beside him, utterly baffled.
When he looked at the eyes in the painting again, the feeling was gone.
It was as if that observation—one that transcended time and space—could only happen under specific conditions. Once the moment was lost, it was hard to re-enter that state.
’What the hell is this painting?’
If it were some piece of electronic technology, that would be one thing, but he’d never heard of anyone seeing the future through a mere painting.
Nearby, Martha, Joey, and the others noticed something was amiss with Shen Feng and looked on with concern.
Joey asked,
"Mr. Savior, are you feeling unwell?"
Though the man before them wore a hood and mask, sweat was clearly visible on his forehead, and steam even seemed to be rising from his head. Something was clearly not right.
Little did they know, they had just had a brush with death.
Shen Feng replied calmly,
"I’m fine. I just spaced out for a moment."
Jingwei’s voice sounded again, this time extremely serious.
"I advise you not to look at this painting again unless you are fully prepared. If you truly lose control, you are now capable of destroying the entire world..."
There was one thing Jingwei left unsaid: perhaps Shen Feng’s own instability was now the greatest threat to the world—a development the Whisperers would be delighted to see.
Shen Feng nodded in understanding and put both paintings away.
’This isn’t the right time to be studying these bizarre paintings.’
’At the very least, I need to be fully prepared before I try again. I can’t risk being hypnotized by this thing or falling into some unconscious state; that would be a disaster.’
One of his main objectives in coming to Eagle Country was to track down the Purifiers connected to Cheney and Brendan, uproot them all, and send a message to the Purification Society. With that mission now largely complete, he could start thinking about his next mission to a new apocalyptic world.
After all, he only had a few days left. Moreover, he wouldn’t be able to bring the Gray Tide, so he needed to prepare thoroughly in advance.
Everything would be reset to the beginning, yet it would be completely different.
Shen Feng then looked at the three police officers before him and said,
"I have to leave. I’m entrusting Martha to you for now. Please, take good care of her."
With both her parents dead, the little girl was now an orphan. She had been tortured and abused, which had only worsened her autism. Her situation was truly pitiable.
Besides, the fact that she had managed to have two "Visualizations" of the future was too significant to ignore.
Shen Feng planned to give Martha a thorough examination after he returned from the Biohazard Apocalypse to figure out what was really going on with her.
’If I could uncover the secrets of this "Visualization" ability, maybe I could gain the power to predict the future myself.’
’Then I would truly be invincible in my fight against the Whisperers and other powerful entities.’
Joey and the other two officers knew the Savior would have to leave eventually, but they hadn’t expected it to be so soon. They couldn’t hide their reluctance to see him go.
The day’s events were enough to be seared into their memories for a lifetime.
They had never imagined that their ordinary lives could contain such a magnificent and tumultuous day.
Following the legendary Savior, wearing Gray Tide Battle Armor, battling an evil organization, rescuing victimized children, and even killing a provisional senator!
It was like something straight out of a movie.
Joey took a deep breath and said, "Mr. Savior, please, rest assured. My wife and I don’t have children. I’ll apply to adopt Martha and treat her as if she were my own daughter."
This wasn’t an empty promise; he had already been considering adopting a child.
Besides, after the short time they had spent together, he already felt that Martha was a little girl who tugged at the heartstrings.
She was from Shuanghu Town, and as the town’s police chief, it only felt right for him to be the one to adopt her.
