My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome

Chapter 332: The Bonds That Remained

The thread stayed in front of Kai, thin, almost invisible, and yet he felt it more clearly than anything else in the entire collapsing darkness.

He reached toward it, fingers trembling. The madness kept raging around him, thousands of voices screaming, memories crashing through his mind one after another, every failure, every death, every version of himself he’d been forced to witness.

He couldn’t look away from the thread.

It felt familiar. Real.

His fingers finally closed around it.

Everything changed. Not the darkness. Not the trial. Something inside him.

A familiar presence pressed through the madness.

"You’re still here."

His eyes widened. He knew that voice.

Tiamat.

He couldn’t see her, but he could feel her, unmistakable, steady.

His grip tightened around the thread. "...Yeah." His voice barely carried. "I’m still here."

The other threads sharpened around him, and he could see them properly now, thousands, maybe more, stretching out into the darkness in every direction. One led toward Lily, and the moment he touched it, a memory surfaced clean and whole. Lily standing in the middle of the disaster, coordinating hunters while everything around her fell apart. "Everyone, move!"

Another led to Mira, fighting through exhaustion that should have stopped her, refusing to yield.

Another to Raze, carving a path through Burning Earth so the others could follow.

Another to Elden, standing his ground beside them, enduring.

Another to Gabriel, the Astral Church fighting alongside Mythal instead of standing apart from it.

Another to Mayor Ko, looking out over the exhausted survivors after everything ended. "Everyone accounted for?"

One voice answering. "Here."

Another. "Here."

Another. "Alive."

Kai’s eyes widened slowly. These memories were different from the others entirely. They weren’t failures. Weren’t deaths. Weren’t alternate possibilities dredged up to break him.

They were real. Things he had actually lived through. Things he had shared with people who were still, right now, waiting for him.

He looked at the threads again, and understanding settled deep in his chest.

They weren’t chains.

They were connections.

The darkness shook violently.

BOOOOOOM!

The trial reacted, every thread trembling under the impact, and the voices returned in full.

"YOU WILL FAIL!"

His body jerked. Crimson darkness erupted around him, memories flooding back all at once, Mythal burning, hunters dying, cities collapsing, every possible future where he failed everyone. The countless versions of himself materialized again, thousands, then more, closing in from every side.

"YOU SHOULD HAVE SAVED THEM!"

"YOU WEREN’T STRONG ENOUGH!"

"YOU TRUSTED THE WRONG PERSON!"

"YOU WILL LOSE THEM!"

His knees buckled. He nearly went down, hands shaking, breath tearing out of him in ragged gasps.

The threads remained.

Lily. Mira. Raze. Elden. Gabriel. Mayor Ko. The hunters. Mythal itself.

And Tiamat.

He gritted his teeth against the onslaught. It kept crashing into him, wave after wave, but he didn’t try to erase any of the memories flooding through his mind. Didn’t try to argue every voice into silence.

He simply held on to what he knew was real.

The memories surfaced one after another, Lily coordinating the defense. Raze tearing through Burning Earth. Mira fighting past exhaustion. Elden standing firm. Gabriel’s Church fighting beside them instead of apart. Mayor Ko’s roll call, and the answers that followed.

"Here."

"Alive."

His eyes burned. The voices screamed louder.

"YOU WILL FAIL!"

His fists clenched. "Maybe."

The voices paused, just for a heartbeat.

His breathing stayed heavy, his body still shaking, but he remained on his feet.

"Maybe I will."

The darkness trembled around him. He looked at the threads still stretching out into the void.

"Maybe I can’t save everyone."

Another step.

"Maybe I’ll make the wrong choice."

Another.

"Maybe I’ll lose people."

His eyes hardened.

"But I’m still here." Another step. "And they’re still here."

The crimson world cracked.

CRACK.

He looked ahead. "So I’ll keep going."

The trial erupted in response, every memory crashing down at once, the countless versions of him screaming, the darkness twisting violently around him, crimson light blinding enough to burn. Pain surged through his mind.

He screamed, his whole body shaking, knees nearly giving out entirely.

His fingers stayed wrapped around the threads.

He could feel them. The people. The city. The bonds that had held even through all of this.

And the strongest thread of all remained steady beneath his grip.

"You’re not alone," Tiamat said.

His eyes widened. He clenched his fist. "I know."

Then he pushed forward. One step. Then another.

The darkness cracked beneath his boots.

CRACK.

Another step.

The countless versions of himself began breaking apart.

CRACK.

The ruined cities vanished.

CRACK.

The battlefields dissolved.

CRACK.

The foreign memories fell away one by one, and the voices grew distant, thinner with every step he took.

He didn’t run. He didn’t fight. He simply kept walking forward.

Then the entire crimson world shattered around him.

BOOOOOOOOOOM!

Kai opened his eyes.

He stood exactly where he’d been standing before the trial began. Mythal. Frozen still, rubble suspended in the air, every hunter locked in place exactly as they’d been.

Lily. Mira. Raze. Elden. Gabriel. Mayor Ko. All of them, exactly where he’d left them.

He stood in silence, exhausted, not in his body, which felt perfectly whole, but somewhere deeper, like his mind had been dragged through years of suffering compressed into a single stretch of time.

He raised his head slowly. Bahamut still loomed above him, watching. Tiamat stood at his side.

Nobody spoke for several long seconds.

Then Bahamut said, "Congratulations."

Kai blinked. He looked around, then back at the dragon. "...That’s it?"

Bahamut’s eyes narrowed slightly. "You have passed."

He stared, waiting for something more, another attack, another stage, anything.

Nothing came.

He rubbed the side of his head. "...That was surprisingly simple."

Bahamut’s expression shifted, only slightly, but enough that Kai immediately regretted the word choice.

"Simple?"

"...I mean—"

"You misunderstand what occurred," Bahamut cut in.

Kai fell quiet.

"Without the bonds you formed in Mythal, you would most likely have failed."

His expression sobered, and he looked toward the frozen city, at the people, the hunters, everyone who had fought beside him without knowing any of this had happened at all.

"Your strength alone would not have been enough," Bahamut continued.

Kai said nothing.

The dragon’s gaze shifted to Tiamat. "And without her assistance—" a pause, "—your chances would have been even lower."

Kai glanced at her. She only smiled. "You’re still here."

He returned it, faintly. Yeah.

He looked back at Bahamut. "So that’s what this test was really about."

The dragon nodded. "Strength alone would not have allowed you to overcome this trial." His voice deepened. "You passed because you remembered what you were fighting for."

Kai nodded slowly, looking out at Mythal once more. The city sat frozen and silent, nobody aware of what had just happened. Nobody had seen his struggle. Nobody had heard the voices. Nobody had watched the countless versions of himself collapse one by one.

Only three beings knew.

Him. Tiamat. Bahamut.

He let out a slow breath. Then something caught his attention, a piece of rubble hanging motionless in the air beside him. It hadn’t moved.

He frowned, checking the wind. Nothing. The clouds. Nothing. The hunters. Still frozen.

His expression changed. "...Wait."

He looked around the entire city. Time hadn’t resumed.

He turned to Bahamut. "Time hasn’t resumed."

The dragon met his gaze calmly. "Not yet."

His eyes narrowed. He’d assumed the trial was finished.

Apparently, something still remained.

Tiamat’s expression sobered as well, and Kai looked between the two ancient beings, understanding settling in slowly.

The trial was over.

Whatever came next was clearly something else entirely.
