My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome

Chapter 222: Whispering Ravine (Part 3)

The Wyvern circled the chamber slowly. It didn’t rush. It didn’t roar.

It watched.

The room itself had become part of the fight, broken pillars scattered across the floor, sections of collapsed wall, shallow pools left behind by some underground stream, boulders half-sunk into the stone. Unlike the last one, this creature had patience.

Every time Darius shifted his footing, its eyes tracked the movement. Every time Josie raised her bow, its wings adjusted a fraction. Every time Milo planted his shield, it changed the angle of its next approach.

Vera’s eyes narrowed as the pattern clicked into place. "It’s watching us."

Then, quieter, more unsettled. "No. It’s studying us."

The Wyvern lunged, not toward Darius, the obvious threat, but straight at Vera. It had already worked out who was directing the fight.

Milo moved instantly. So did Darius, neither of them hesitating even a half-second.

The battle reignited.

Outside the chamber, Kai watched in silence.

Sera smiled. "It figured out who’s making the decisions."

Kai nodded slowly. "So now they’ll have to change theirs."

...

The first few exchanges went badly.

Everything that had worked against the last Wyvern failed here. Darius charged, and the creature sidestepped before his strike even landed. Josie’s arrows were avoided almost lazily. Callum’s stealth attack was met with a turn that shouldn’t have been possible unless it had already anticipated exactly where he’d appear.

It had learned their rhythm.

The five fell back behind Milo’s shield, catching their breath, nobody speaking for a moment.

Then Vera lowered her staff. "We’re too predictable." She looked around at the others. "It’s reading our habits."

Darius managed a tired grin despite everything. "So we stop giving it habits."

Without further discussion, the whole team shifted. Darius started feinting short instead of committing to full charges. Josie deliberately fired arrows she knew would miss, forcing the Wyvern to react to shots that weren’t real threats. Callum openly revealed his position before vanishing at the last possible instant instead of staying hidden the whole approach. Milo stopped anchoring in one place, repositioning constantly.

Vera’s commands shrank to single words.

"Left."

"Now."

"Wait."

The team’s movements became unpredictable even to each other, and that unpredictability was exactly the point.

Kai watched it unfold. "They stopped following a plan."

Sera glanced at him. "They’re trusting each other."

Kai gave a small nod. "Exactly."

...

The fight stretched into its longest phase yet, and nobody carried it alone. Every member became essential in their own turn.

The Wyvern suddenly abandoned Darius entirely, diving straight for Vera. Old Darius would have chased the fight back to himself. This time, he threw his whole body between them instead, meeting the strike head-on.

[Class Skill: Thunderbreaker — Activated.]

Lightning exploded across the chamber on impact, and for the first time all fight, his strength wasn’t being spent to overpower something.

It was being spent to protect someone.

Kai murmured, almost to himself, "He finally understands."

Vera stopped only analyzing weak points after that and started reading behavior instead.

"The tail. It twitches first." A beat later. "Watch the shoulders. It’s turning."

The team stopped reacting to attacks and started moving before they landed.

The Wyvern refused to expose its already-damaged wing again, guarding it carefully through every exchange. Josie smiled at that. "Fine."

She fired three arrows deliberately wide, and the Wyvern dodged exactly where she wanted it to. The fourth arrow curved straight through the gap it had created for itself, tearing the wing further. The creature staggered and crashed briefly into one of the stone pillars.

Sera laughed under her breath. "That was clever."

Callum stopped chasing damage entirely and started controlling position instead, every strike landing somewhere deliberate. The leg. The shoulder. The opposite flank. Nothing meant to wound seriously, just enough to herd the creature exactly where Vera needed it.

The others noticed what he was doing without him explaining it, and started helping without a word passing between them. The whole battlefield became a weapon they were shaping together.

Then the Wyvern realized the entire fight orbited around Milo, and it committed everything into a single overwhelming charge, claws and wings and full body weight behind it.

Milo planted his feet.

[Class Skill: Bastion — Activated.]

His boots ground trenches into the stone floor. His arms shook under the pressure. For a moment it looked genuinely impossible.

Then Darius braced his shoulder against Milo’s back, adding his own weight to the wall. Callum slashed at the Wyvern’s hind leg mid-charge. Josie’s arrows disrupted its balance at the worst possible moment. Vera poured mana straight into Milo’s shield, reinforcing it from behind.

The charge broke.

Kai said one word. "Good."

Milo heard it through his own ragged breathing, and the exhausted grin that followed said everything he didn’t have the air left to say out loud.

...

The Wyvern was breathing hard now, movements slowing, its ruined wing dragging against the stone floor. The five didn’t rush the opening. They waited, watching the way Kai always did, letting the moment arrive on its own.

The Wyvern finally committed to one last desperate lunge.

Vera saw it first. "Now!"

Everything happened at once. Josie’s arrow took one of its eyes. Callum’s blade opened its ankle. Milo locked the charge dead in place. Darius launched upward, lightning gathering around his fist.

[Class Skill: Lightning Rush — Activated.]

Thunder cracked through the chamber as Thunderbreaker drove straight through the Wyvern’s chest.

Silence.

The massive body froze in place, then slowly folded down onto the broken stone.

No cheering. No shouting.

Just five exhausted hunters standing in the wreckage of what they’d just done together.

...

They approached the fallen Wyvern carefully. It looked dead, the light gone from both remaining eyes.

Darius reached toward the exposed core.

The tail lashed out one final time, faster than anything it had managed all fight.

CLANG!

Sera’s shield intercepted it inches from Darius’s chest, the impact ringing through the chamber like a struck bell. The tail dropped limp against the stone afterward, finally still.

Sera lowered her shield. "Monsters don’t care about honor."

Kai stepped in for the first time since the fight began, looking down at the motionless creature.

"They’re dangerous until you’re absolutely certain they aren’t."

He tapped the Wyvern’s skull once with the tip of his sword. Nothing.

"Check."

He tapped again. Still nothing.

"Confirm."

Only then did he step back. "Then collect."

The five nodded in silence, a lesson none of them would forget the next time something looked dead a half-second too early.

...

The Dungeon Core dissolved into scattered blue light, the oppressive weight of the chamber lifting all at once as the exit portal formed near the shattered doorway.

They stepped through it together, sunlight and fresh air replacing the stale mana instantly, the ordinary noise of Mythal rising up around them. For a moment nobody said anything at all, the contrast between the dungeon’s dead silence and the city’s constant hum almost too sharp to process right away.

...

The five stopped a short distance from the Gate, glancing at each other before turning, almost at the same moment, toward Kai and Sera.

Darius stepped forward first and bowed deeply. "Thank you."

Not for saving them. For believing they could do it without being saved.

Vera followed. "I thought experience came from clearing more dungeons." She smiled. "It comes from understanding them."

Josie scratched the back of her head. "I always thought getting stronger meant unlocking better skills." She laughed. "Turns out I just needed to stop rushing everything."

Callum offered a rare smile of his own. "I’ve always fought alone." His eyes flicked toward the others. "I don’t think I want to anymore."

Milo stepped forward last. "We would’ve survived today without you fighting." He paused. "But we never would’ve learned without you watching."

Kai looked at all five of them in turn. "You earned every step."

Sera smiled, warm and unguarded. "Don’t lose what you learned. Keep clearing together."

All five nodded at once.

...

They started walking away, and Darius suddenly stopped dead, eyes going wide.

"Finn!"

The others caught up to the thought immediately.

Vera nearly laughed. "He needs to know."

Josie was already jogging ahead. "If everyone trains like this, our guild’s going to become terrifying!"

Callum, usually the quietest of them, was already breaking toward the Guild Hall. "We should start immediately."

Even Milo broke into a run, the five of them disappearing down the street together, already talking over each other about new formations, communication drills, positioning exercises, simulated dungeon runs, every mistake they wanted fixed before their next expedition even started.

Sera watched them vanish around the corner, a smile spreading slowly across her face. "They’re going to overwhelm Finn."

Kai let out a quiet laugh. "Probably."

For a while, neither of them said anything else, the street settling back into its ordinary rhythm around them.

Then Sera glanced over. "Worth spending three days on them?"

Kai looked at the now-empty street where the five had disappeared.

"They’ll keep each other alive."

Sera nodded. She knew that was the highest compliment Kai ever gave anyone.
