Chapter 136-On the losing end (2)
Samahita’s breath slowed down, rapidly. Her nails clawed the dirt on the ground. Soft, hot tears fell down her face.
The truth was quicky tearing her insides apart. It tore something inside her that she couldn’t figure out how to put back together.
That last strike from Nytherael, it flashed through her mind again and again. It was a broken memory set on replay that kept her pain alive.
She gasped hard for air. Filling her lungs with air made her feel more empty than ever. The harder she breathed in the deeper the void inside her seemed to grow. Nothing was able to fill it and she new why.
Her fingers dug deeper into the soil.
Samahita pressed her eyes shut completely, she slowed her breathing a focus on listening to her environment. The truth came crashing down on her like ice cold water.
She couldn’t feel the cold natural essense flowing in the air and the earths even through she had struggled to climb up the mountain.
As the saying went, the higher one goes, the cooler it becomes and yet, despite climbing halfway to the top, she couldn’t feel the cold.
It wasn’t just the cold in the outside that she failed to feel. It was the ice in her core that had been there since the day she was born.
It was her identity, her life and everything that represented who she was and who she was meant to be. And she couldn’t feel even a shred of it left behind.
Her heart grew cold. Not from the natural ice that usually kept it icy and detached but from the truth that she had lost.
She failed to assassinate Sseraphis Noxveil and made an enemy of the most powerful beast family in the beast world. Worse, she got into a fight with a grieving nine-tailed fox and the merciless strikes from him didn’t strip her of years of cultivation, it stripped her of her identity.
Samahita failed to connect to her beast. She couldn’t feel her wings, her feathers, or the breeze on her skin the way that it used to feel when she took flight. She couldn’t feel the beast world respond to her as one of its children but an outcast.
The vision came back in her memory. It played out vividly. At the time when she saw herself, stripped of everything and looking up at her sister, she felt it was unfair.
She wondered what she could have possibly done to deserve such a fate. Why her careless and reckless sister got the victory, the family and the powerful friends while she ended up with the short end of the stick but now she knew.
The answer became evident after her fall. It was because she got so caught up in what was to come that she forgot herself, her principles and her kind heart. She stood with her head raised high and justified taking a life and made excuses to set herself free of the guilt of that choice but forgot that karma had eyes and ears.
She regretted not taking Fairy Zarathia’s advice. Had she just discarded the vision then she wouldn’t have been obsessed with changing her future.
Now, she didn’t just fail to change it but fast forwarded her fall. Her attack of the underwater palace, provoked Nytherael whose attacks killed her beast.
She wasn’t just an outcast, she was a criminal. Even though she failed to kill Sseraphis, she killed Rhysandor. Her hands were stained with the blood of an innocent beast.
Samahita gritted her teeth and released the breath she was holding. She was weak, tired and hungry. Without her beast as a shield, petty things like hunger, exhaustion and weak body became a reality she’d never known before.
"What... What have I done?"
She knew the answer. She had handed the throne she was meant to inherit to her sister and cut off any paths of success for herself.
Her hands clawing into the soil bled out. Red blood stained the soil and the metallic smell mixed with the dirt and the thick mixed smell was impossible for Samahita to swallow.
She lifted her head and stared at the skies. The sun wasn’t kind to her burning eyes. She squeezed them shut immediately and tore out a scream. "Aah!"
Her heart refused to believe that the future she refused to accept before were dug by her own hands.
She hadn’t lost her beast fighting a glorious battle on the battlefield. She hadn’t lost herself defending the nation she once loved so much, no. She lost everything on a selfish impulse that backfired in her face and left her with nothing.
Her voice tore through the mountain and barely made it to the skies above. Not like her phoenix voice used to.
The reality came crashing down like a crashing storm that hit every fibre of her being. She wasn’t an ice phoenix anymore, and due to her crime, she wasn’t a noble princess anymore.
Everything she had, everything she was, every future she dreamt of, gone. In that moment, dozens of cold poisons from her father’s experimental days flooded her veins.
Samahita’s body jerked and she coughed out mouthful of blood and fell limply to the ground. Samahita trembled, shivered and curled up into a ball.
Pain assaulted her body and the memories of those dark dungeons came flooding back. Her phoenix powers allowed her to erase those memories and pretend they never happened, it kept her naive and indifferent as she only left out the best sides of her father.
Now that the shield was gone, the horrors she’d ignored, returned. The darker side of growing up on the emperor’s bad side came crashing down on her weak body.
Samahita laughed. A weak awkward laugh that didn’t reach her eyes.
The praises of her father that she sang to her sister, every cold reminder to do his bidding to earn his love resonated in her head and made the ache worse.
Her sister who never turned the pain off or pretended it never happened always spoke the truth, while she, the hypocrite had lived a lie.
"I’m...sorry, Shea..." She offered an apology, her voice too weak.
An apology that Sheana would never received because they were set apart by her actions.
Regret flooded through her body. She regretted letting her sister down, regretted failing her subjects and most of all, she regretted letting herself down.
She closed her eyes, embraced the cold and didn’t let out another scream or word.
