Chapter 132-On the run
In a different corner of the dynasty, in the small village of Nusiku, Theren and Zeyron booked a room in an old rundown in and settled in to get some rest.
"I never thought that I would ever seen shelter in a place like this," Zeyron groaned and dropped on the bed, exhausted from skin to bone.
"Get up first. I’ll tend to your wounds," Theren started arranging the medicine they had on the table. "You should take medicine."
Zeyron didn’t get up. They had been on the run for a full day and night. They hardly got a moment to breath and he had no more strength in him.
"We do this. We’ll make an enemy of a nine-tailed fox and a nine-horned dragon. My brother and my brother-in-law won’t let this slide," Nerezza had warned them, at the time he didn’t take it seriously.
Now, he was being hunted by dragons, snakes, foxes and every other beasts clans loyal to the Aeltharion, Sseraphis and Nytherael.
The news of Rhysandor’s death hadn’t been made public yet, the world was yet to find out of their crime but that didn’t mean they were getting away with it.
The skies was looking out for them, the underground was searching for them and the surface was no safer either. They had to mask their essense, their spiritual presence and keep their faces hidden because they could never know who in the places they passed worked for those hunting them.
"Zeyron, get up," Theren pushed his body, enduring the pain and nudged Zeyron.
Zeyron heard him, felt him but didn’t react. His life in the capital was over, he had no life except for being a runaway waiting for his death. He doubted the three beasts would spare him.
He regretted listening to Hadrian. He regretted not taking Fairy Zarathia’s advice and let go of the future he saw. Had he only done that, it wouldn’t have haunted him and he wouldn’t have ended up a masked name soon to be erased from the world.
"Don’t pretend you don’t hear me. I know that you can hear me so get up," Theren took hold of his hand and struggled with all his might to pull Zeyron up.
With Zeyron laying effortlessly flat, the weight nearly crashed Theren’s exhausted bones and nearly ripped open his internal injuries.
His muscles grew numb and the backlash force made him forward. As he was hovering right above Zeyron, he ended up landing ontop of the beast.
Zeyron weakly opened his eyes and their gazes matched. That one look triggered floods of guilt in their souls.
To get away from a fate where he falls in love with Theren and gives up his ambitions for him, he made the mistake that pushed forward those consequences; his ambitions were cut off cleanly with a blade called karma and at the end, he was stuck on the run with the very person he wanted to get away from.
As for Theren, he too regretted having made the choice to take Hadrian’s deal. In the end, he was stuck with Zeyron and it wasn’t to save Samahita but to save himself.
Not once since the incident had he thought about Samahita. He focused on survival and taking care of Zeyron to keep his mind busy. He was naturally a beasts beast, always has his hand caring for one beast or another, it was his way of focusing on something more than him. His way of coping.
He realized how little love counted when his life was on the line. In survival mode, he hadn’t once thought about whether or not Samahita got away or survived.
His eyes met the eyes that forced him to make such a life-threatening move. Zeyron’s eyes weren’t as arrogant and fearsome as before. They were exhausted and seemed almost beasty, you know, with a soul behind them.
"Are you planning on laying on me the whole night?" Zeyron asked in an exhausted voice that was barely audible.
Theren swallowed. He wondered about the relationship he saw the two of them sharing and wondered, who would be on top?
His thoughts scared his dazed brain awake and he rolled off Zeyron and settled on the empty spot on the small bed.
The bed was so small that they squeezed together, their bodies touching. And the heat radiating for each other was nowhere close to warming their cold hearts and granting a silver lining to their ruined lives.
"What do you plan to do if we survive this?"
"Survive?" Zeyron scoffed. He had tasted the true power of a nine-tailed fox and that was just the icing. To go against Nytherael alongside Sseraphis and Aeltharion was suicide.
Speaking of survival was daydreaming. They were set to die, it was a matter of when. "Forget surviving. We’ll be lucky if we go to the underworld in one piece," he let out.
Theren blinked. He remembered Rhysandor. They hadn’t worked closely in the past but their paths often crossed and he admired him.
The fox had taken his friends collapsing family and raised it back to glory, saved Nerezza, protected her reputation and uplifted her by marrying her when the world was condemning her.
Rhysandor was his inspiration, he had hoped to be that kind of saviour for Samahita. To be her knight in shinning armor and protect her, stand with her and for her against the world. And now, that very beast had died by his hands.
"Do you think they held a wake for him..."
Zeyron went silent. He didn’t know and he didn’t want to think about it. He did feel bad that Rhysandor took a blow that wasn’t meant for him but that blow had signed away their lives. It wasn’t worth crying over spilled water when his tank was bound to spill next.
"You can apologize to him in the afterlife. We are heading there soon," he said and rolled over.
Since the bed was small, he ended up with his leg and hand draping over Theren’s body. Zeyron glanced at the side frame of the snake and sighed. He was too tired to move again and that position felt comfortable for his tired body and wounds so he just closed his eyes unapologetically and slept.
Theren didn’t push his body away. He just blinked and continued staring at the ceiling that was nearly falling over. "We don’t have a future, do we?"
No answer came as his companion had already drifted off.
