Chapter 282: What’s in the Laboratory
Sierra Sullivan had always felt that the door to the warehouse where they’d gone to get supplies was already incredibly sturdy, and its security level was more than high enough.
But compared to the laboratory before her now, it paled in comparison.
’Just what is this? A Keldorian laboratory?’
’Why would it need such a powerful security system?’
Sierra Sullivan was still lost in thought when the door CLICKED open.
Just seeing the speed at which the door slowly swung open was enough to know how thick and heavy it was.
The people following Dr. Hayes stirred when they saw the door open.
Although everyone was bundled up so tightly that Sierra Sullivan couldn’t see their expressions, she could tell from their body language that they were all very happy right now.
To be more precise, they were excited.
But no matter how excited they were, none of them moved past Dr. Hayes to enter first.
They all waited obediently, following only after Dr. Hayes had stepped through the doorway.
Nathan Thorne craned his neck to look, but unfortunately, all he could see from the outside was a pitch-black doorway. He couldn’t make out a single thing inside.
He was simply too curious and had to look to Hector Grant. "Captain Grant, there could be danger in there. Aren’t we going to protect Dr. Hayes and his team?"
Upon hearing this, Hector Grant glanced at Nathan Thorne, already well aware of what he was thinking.
’Protection?’
’Nathan Thorne was just plain curious and wanted to get a look inside the lab.’
In truth, it wasn’t just Nathan Thorne. Even Hector Grant himself was extremely curious about what kind of laboratory this was.
But...
Hector Grant shook his head. "The higher-ups said that without Dr. Hayes’s permission, we are not to follow them in."
"What?"
Nathan Thorne stared at Hector Grant in disbelief.
"You’re the team captain! You’re responsible for the safety of Dr. Hayes and his people. If they don’t let you inside and something goes wrong, won’t that fall on you?"
The words tumbled out before he could think.
But as soon as he said it, Nathan Thorne realized he’d misspoken and hurriedly tried to explain.
"Of course, I’m not trying to jinx Dr. Hayes and his team. I was just... just saying! I’m concerned about them!"
Seeing Nathan Thorne’s nervous expression, the corners of Hector Grant’s mouth lifted in a slight smile. "You’re quick on the uptake, but you overthink things. I get what you mean."
"Phew!" Nathan Thorne let out a sigh of relief. "As long as you get it!"
Glancing at the laboratory entrance again, Nathan Thorne still wasn’t satisfied. "So I really can’t take a look? I won’t go inside, I’ll just peek from the doorway!"
Hector Grant turned his head and gazed into the distance. "Did someone say something? The wind’s so loud, I think I’m hearing things!"
"What?"
Nathan Thorne’s eyes filled with confusion.
’He was fine just a second ago, how could his hearing suddenly go bad?’
’Wait!’
Nathan Thorne’s eyes shot wide as a guess formed in his mind.
’Is Hector Grant saying...’
Nathan Thorne understood that some things were best understood without being said.
He didn’t press Hector Grant for an answer, instead moving stealthily toward the entrance.
His movements weren’t particularly covert. Although the surrounding Superpower Users were on guard, anyone who wasn’t blind could see what Nathan Thorne was doing.
But no one said a word about it.
Of course, they weren’t going to stop him.
A little peek wouldn’t hurt.
Besides, they were also very curious about what was inside the lab.
Under these strange circumstances, Nathan Thorne silently made his way to the laboratory entrance.
Standing at the entrance, Nathan Thorne waited a moment before cautiously poking his head inside.
The lab’s electrical systems didn’t seem to be affected.
However, most of the lights were off.
Dr. Hayes and the others were nowhere to be seen.
Nathan Thorne gripped the doorframe, poked his head further in, and meticulously scanned his surroundings.
Soon, his gaze landed on a glass column in the distance.
Although it was far away and Nathan Thorne was wearing protective goggles that obscured his vision, he trusted what he saw. He was certain he wasn’t mistaken.
He didn’t know what the liquid inside the glass column was, but the figure standing within it was definitely... a person.
Realizing this, Nathan Thorne immediately pulled back and retreated several steps.
The ground beneath his feet was thick sand, which already required care to walk on without falling.
So for someone like Nathan Thorne, retreating in such a frantic, panicked state, it was no surprise when his footing gave way and he fell right to the ground.
Sierra Sullivan had been keeping an eye on Nathan Thorne, so when he fell, she instinctively glanced at Jayce beside her. Their eyes met as he, too, looked over.
They both knew that Nathan Thorne must have seen something astonishing.
Otherwise, given Nathan Thorne’s typically carefree nature, he would never have panicked like this.
Hector Grant also realized something was wrong and, along with Sierra Sullivan and Jayce, quickly ran over to Nathan Thorne.
"Nathan Thorne."
"What’s wrong?"
Jayce and Hector Grant helped Nathan Thorne up from the ground together.
Sierra Sullivan also looked at Nathan Thorne with concern. "What’s wrong? What did you see?"
"I saw—"
"Everyone, come on in!"
Dr. Hayes’s voice suddenly cut in, interrupting what Nathan Thorne was about to say.
Nathan Thorne heard the voice and looked toward Dr. Hayes.
Dr. Hayes happened to be looking over as well, his face still completely expressionless, making it impossible to read his mood.
"What’s the matter? Is there a problem?"
Nathan Thorne swallowed hard.
He wasn’t sure if he had just been hallucinating, nor was he sure what connection Dr. Hayes had to what he’d just seen.
He didn’t even understand why Dr. Hayes would come out at this particular moment to let them in.
When Dr. Hayes had gone in earlier, he hadn’t given them so much as a glance, let alone any instructions.
Everyone understood Dr. Hayes’s cold personality, so they hadn’t thought anything of it.
In fact, Dr. Hayes asking them to come in now seemed even stranger.
Dr. Hayes raised an eyebrow. "What’s wrong with you?"
The question was directed at Nathan Thorne.
"Are you feeling unwell? As it happens, there’s a lot of equipment here that could give you a physical check-up."
’Equipment?’
’A physical check-up?’
The scene he had just witnessed immediately flashed through Nathan Thorne’s mind.
He shook his head so hard it was a blur. "No, thanks, no thanks! I’m perfectly healthy, no need for a check-up. I’m just... a little hungry. I’ll be fine after I get something to eat."
Dr. Hayes didn’t seem inclined to insist. Hearing Nathan Thorne’s words, he just gave a slight nod. "Alright, then everyone come on in."
With that, he turned and walked back inside.
Hector Grant’s brow furrowed imperceptibly, but he still said, "Well then, let’s go in."
