Chapter 276: They Treat Me Well, But They Treat You Even Better
Sierra Sullivan calmly met the agitated Dominic Crawford’s gaze. "Look out for you? You’re already a Superpower User. Your life is much better than any normal person’s. You still need me to look out for you? Haven’t we done enough of that already?
"When we all returned to the base, we were worried you’d have nowhere to live, so we rented you a place, furnished it, and took care of all your daily needs. We even gave you Contribution Points to get you through the toughest times.
"We didn’t even say a word when you let Joy Warren and her mother move in."
’If it weren’t for Joy Warren and Dominic Crawford getting more and more out of line, we wouldn’t have drifted apart.’
’But even after our relationship soured, whenever we went on missions together and Dominic got hurt, we still did everything we could to help him.’
’Under these circumstances, how could Dominic Crawford have the nerve to ask why she wasn’t looking out for him?’
’How could he even bring himself to say something like that?’
Jayce walked over to Sierra Sullivan’s side and gently patted her on the shoulder. "Sierra, don’t be angry. He’s not worth it."
A pang of regret hit Dominic Crawford right after he spoke.
But before the feeling could fully set in, he heard what Jayce said.
That tiny flicker of remorse was instantly extinguished, replaced by a wave of shame and anger.
"That’s right! Of course it’s not worth getting angry over someone like me!"
"To you, I was always disposable!"
"I’m not like Nathan Thorne, with his special Superpower that can benefit you."
"For a plain, ordinary person like me, any little kindness you showed was just charity, something to do when you were bored. You never truly accepted me."
"If you really saw me as a friend, why were you so critical of my girlfriend? If you had just been a little nicer to Joy, she never would have gone to Simon Hughes, and I wouldn’t have ended up in this mess!"
Dominic Crawford was simply venting his pent-up frustration. After spewing it all out in one go, he seemed utterly drained, gasping for breath.
At first, Sierra Sullivan had been disappointed in Dominic Crawford.
But as she listened to his endless stream of complaints, she found herself growing calm.
It was beyond disappointment now; Dominic Crawford no longer had the power to affect her emotions at all.
’No wonder she and the others had grown so distant from him!’
’Sierra had previously thought that their rift with Dominic was all because of Joy Warren’s arrival—that she was the sole cause.’
’But now, Sierra finally understood the truth.’
’It wasn’t just because of Joy Warren.’
’It was because of Dominic himself.’
’It was because Dominic was never truly one of them.’
’Even if Joy Warren had never appeared, he and they would have parted ways sooner or later.’
’Joy Warren’s arrival had merely accelerated the inevitable.’
’In a way, she even had Joy Warren to thank.’
’If it weren’t for her, and for everything that had happened since, who knows how long it would have taken Sierra to see things so clearly.’
As this realization settled in, Sierra Sullivan let out a sigh of relief.
’From now on, she wouldn’t have to feel any regret over it.’
’In fact, she should be grateful!’
Just as Sierra was lost in thought, an angry roar erupted beside her.
"Dominic Crawford! Are you insane? Do you have any idea what you’re saying?"
Sierra turned and, as expected, saw Nathan Thorne glaring in their direction, his face dark with fury.
His face was thunderous, so dark it looked like it was about to drip ink.
Nathan Thorne stormed over to Dominic Crawford and grabbed him by the collar.
"Do you have any idea what you just said? Weren’t Sierra Sullivan and Jayce good enough to you? What about Candice Tate, Aunt Shelby, and Mr. Everett? Were they bad to you? How can you say such heartless things?"
A flicker of guilt showed in Dominic Crawford’s eyes, but it vanished as quickly as it came.
"They were good to me, but they were better to you! Before you showed up, they treated me the best! But after you came along, everything changed! They treat you better than me! And why? Because your Superpower is rarer than mine, because you’re more useful to them! If they’re just looking out for their own interests, then why can’t I?"
"You—" Nathan Thorne was so choked with anger he could barely speak. "How can you say such heartless things?"
"You’ve enjoyed all the benefits, so of course you wouldn’t say anything bad about them! But you can’t expect me to be just like you, can you?"
At this, Dominic Crawford actually laughed.
It was a smile full of scorn.
Seeing Dominic Crawford like this, Nathan Thorne’s anger instantly vanished.
It was as if someone had dumped a bucket of ice water over his head, dousing even the fiercest rage.
It’s like they say, you can’t wake a person who’s only pretending to be asleep.
You can’t change the mind of someone who is determined to be biased, no matter what you say.
"Nathan," Jayce said quietly. "Let him go."
Nathan let go. He took one last look at Dominic Crawford, then slowly lowered his head and walked back to Jayce and Sierra Sullivan’s side.
Dominic Crawford straightened his clothes. "Sierra Sullivan, Jayce, let’s get back to business. We’re all adults here. There’s no need to get hung up on trivial matters, and we certainly shouldn’t let them delay what’s important, right? My proposal really is for everyone’s benefit. I hope you’ll seriously consider it—"
"There’s nothing to consider," Sierra Sullivan cut him off. "Go back and tell Simon Hughes that the prices at The Little Green Shop are not changing. Whatever he wants to do, we’ll be waiting."
The composure Dominic Crawford had just regained crumbled the moment he heard her words.
"Sierra Sullivan, do you have to be this way? Are you making this decision because of what I just said? If you are, I can apologize—"
"No," Sierra Sullivan cut him off again. "Don’t overestimate your importance. My decision would be the same whether you said those things or not. It won’t change. Even if you had come here to make amends and apologize, my answer would still be the same."
Sierra Sullivan had made herself so clear that Dominic Crawford couldn’t even pretend to misunderstand.
’But this was a critical matter, one that concerned his family and Joy. I failed. Will Simon Hughes be angry?’
The thought of what Simon Hughes might do to his family and Joy sent a wave of panic through Dominic Crawford.
"Sierra Sullivan," Dominic Crawford said, his tone softening. "This was a task Master Hughes gave me. If I can’t complete it, he’ll definitely take it out on my family and Joy. I don’t care what happens to me, I just don’t want to get them involved. We were friends once. Can’t you please help me?"
