Chapter 268: What Did You Say? I Don’t Understand
Although the staff member preferred Sierra Sullivan, he couldn’t—and wouldn’t dare—offend the Vance and Hughes families.
In the end, he could only shoot Sierra Sullivan an apologetic glance before taking the contract over to Claire Vance.
Claire Vance took the pen and, without even glancing at the contract, signed her name with a flamboyant flourish.
After signing, she shot Sierra Sullivan a smug look.
Sierra Sullivan just smiled nonchalantly. "Since you’ve got your eye on that one, I’ll just take the third one."
"Too bad." Simon Hughes lifted his chin and said breezily, "I’m taking that one."
In the end, the staff member had no choice but to walk over to Simon Hughes and hand him the contract.
Just like Claire Vance, Simon Hughes signed his name with equal arrogance.
As if that would somehow even the score.
Sierra Sullivan shifted into a more comfortable position. "Are there any other properties that meet my requirements?"
The staff member was tempted to advise Sierra Sullivan to come back in a few days. She could surely find a place to rent when Claire Vance and Simon Hughes weren’t around.
But after he met Sierra Sullivan’s gaze, he suppressed the thought.
He knew just by the look in her eyes that she wouldn’t agree to it.
"There are."
The staff member quickly presented several more properties.
Sierra Sullivan was pleased with every single one.
But every time Sierra expressed her satisfaction, Simon Hughes and Claire Vance would invariably step in to snatch it away.
An hour passed, and Sierra Sullivan hadn’t managed to rent a single unit.
Claire Vance and Simon Hughes, on the other hand, had each rented several storefronts.
Some large, some small; some expensive, some cheap.
Even though each was only rented for a month, the total came out to several thousand, even tens of thousands, of Contribution Points for the month.
Even if Simon Hughes and Claire Vance weren’t short on Contribution Points, tossing so many away for nothing still annoyed them.
What’s more, they couldn’t see the slightest hint of defeat on Sierra Sullivan’s face.
Clearly, Sierra Sullivan didn’t care about this at all.
It looked like they were bullying her, but in reality, it was highly likely Sierra was just toying with them.
Realizing this, the two of them were furious but had no way to vent their anger.
Sierra glanced at their sour expressions, then turned back to the staff member. "Any other suitable properties?"
"Well—"
The staff member was at a loss for words.
’Those two over there already look furious.’
’If I keep this up and they have to rent another place, will they start to resent me?’
’If I get on the bad side of both the Hughes and Vance families, I’m a dead man!’
Just as the staff member was hesitating, Hector Grant strode in.
"What’s all this?" Hector Grant’s voice was loud and hearty, and a brilliant smile was plastered on his face, as if he hadn’t noticed the palpable tension at all. "You two, you said you were going to rent a place and come find me right after. What’s taking so long? Why aren’t you back yet?"
Sierra Sullivan sighed. "It’s not that we’re slow. The properties are just too popular. Every place we liked got snatched away. What could we do?"
"You should’ve said so sooner!" Hector Grant said in a relaxed tone. "And here I was wondering what the big deal was! If you can’t rent one, then don’t. I happen to have a suitable storefront just sitting empty. It’s no use to me, so you can use it!"
Sierra Sullivan hadn’t expected such a pleasant surprise. "Really?"
’I’d already resigned myself to not getting a storefront today. The only reason I stuck around was to make Claire Vance and Simon Hughes bleed a little.’
’Making them bleed a little, infuriating them, and *still* getting a place in the end? That would be just perfect!’
"Of course it’s true! Do I look like the type to spout nonsense? Let’s go. Don’t just sit here, come with me and check it out."
Sierra Sullivan stood up at once. "Of course I trust you, Captain Grant. I just wonder if *some people* who signed contracts will actually pay the rent. It would be... interesting if I left and someone decided to back out."
Sierra Sullivan didn’t name names, but she might as well have.
Claire Vance was already furious, and Sierra’s words only enraged her further. "Who do you think you’re looking down on?! You think I can’t afford a few measly Contribution Points? Fine!"
Simon Hughes didn’t say a word, merely giving a pointed look to the person beside him.
A moment later, both of them had paid the Contribution Points.
Only after seeing them pay up did Sierra Sullivan rise to her feet, satisfied. She turned to Hector Grant. "Captain Grant, let’s go."
Yvonne Shelby got up as well, letting out a quiet sigh of relief.
’The process was unpleasant, but the result isn’t bad.’
’At least we didn’t come to blows.’
’And we didn’t lose out at all!’
’That’s good enough for me!’
After Sierra’s group left, Simon Hughes stood up as well.
"Let’s go. Why are you still sitting here? Haven’t we been embarrassed enough?"
Claire Vance rolled her eyes. "Was I the only one who was embarrassed? Weren’t you?"
"Let’s not use such childish methods in the future," Simon Hughes said, still smiling as if unbothered by her attitude. "There are other ways to deal with them."
Claire Vance’s expression grew curious. "Other ways? What kind of ways? Tell me, I’m listening."
"Talking about it now is just empty words. What’s the point? When the time comes, I’ll let you know. I’m leaving."
Simon Hughes waved a dismissive hand as he walked away.
Watching his retreating back, Claire Vance gritted her teeth. "Let’s go, too!"
Seeing that they had all finally left, the staff member let out a huge sigh of relief.
’My job and my life are safe, for now!’
’Not only that, I even earned a ton of Contribution Points!’
Just the thought of it made his face flush with excitement.
’Something this good... should never happen again!’
’Earning Contribution Points is great, but you have to be alive to spend them!’
’I got lucky this time. Who knows if I’ll be so fortunate next time?’
Sierra Sullivan and the others followed Hector Grant and soon arrived at the storefront he had mentioned.
As it happened, it was located directly across from the very first storefront they had picked.
The location was just as good, and the space was even larger.
Yvonne Shelby wore a complicated expression. "Well, that was... quite a turn of events."
Sierra had already put the pieces together. She smiled at Hector Grant. "I think it’s more than just a turn of events. Captain Grant, you knew what was happening here all along, didn’t you? You were just waiting for the right moment to step in."
Hector Grant let out a loud laugh. "What are you talking about? I have no idea what you mean. I guess it’s just a coincidence!"
Seeing that he wouldn’t admit it, Sierra didn’t press the issue.
’Given Hector Grant’s identity and position, it would be inappropriate to spell things out too clearly.’
’It’s enough that we both know what’s going on.’
"So, just tell me what you think of the place!" Hector Grant asked with a grin.
"It’s perfect, of course!" Sierra nodded. "We’ll pay the rent, whatever it is!"
