Chapter 255: Claire Vance Snatches a Man on the Street
Sierra gave Candice a strange look, not quite understanding why she would ask such a question.
This wasn’t the first day they’d known Nathan.
Even situations like this weren’t a first.
’Candice has never asked anything like this before!’
’Why is Candice asking this?’
Candice tilted her head in thought. "I just have a feeling that... Nathan isn’t coming back for dinner."
"Why do you feel that way?" Sierra grew even more puzzled.
Candice’s brows furrowed tightly as she seemed to search for the right words.
But after thinking for a good while, she still couldn’t find a proper way to explain, and finally just shook her head.
"I don’t know. It’s just a feeling."
Sierra didn’t press further, instead turning to look at Jayce.
They exchanged a look, and a sense of foreboding washed over them both.
Candice wasn’t the type to spout nonsense.
If she said something like that, she must have sensed it.
They didn’t know why Candice had this feeling, but they couldn’t just ignore it now that she’d brought it up.
"Candice, how about we eat when we get back?" Sierra suggested. "Otherwise, you can eat at home, and Jayce and I will go check on the situation—"
"I want to go with you!"
Candice cut in eagerly before Sierra could even finish.
Seeing Candice’s anxious expression, Sierra nodded. "Alright, you can come with us. We’ll all eat together when we get back."
Sierra stored all the food from the table in her space, and the three of them immediately left.
They knew where they were going, and with a destination in mind, their pace was naturally much faster.
When they arrived, they saw Nathan surrounded by a group of burly men.
Not only were these men powerfully built, but they were also holding new-model firearms.
Furthermore, every one of them was a Superpower User, and none had a low Superpower Level.
Seeing this, Sierra’s first reaction wasn’t fear, but confusion.
’Didn’t Nathan come here to buy a clock?’
’Why would he get on the wrong side of a group like this?’
’Could it have been sparked by a fight with someone over the clock?’
’But that seems unlikely.’
Nathan could be unreliable at times, but that didn’t mean he was an idiot.
Quite the opposite, in fact. Nathan was very smart and knew how to weigh the pros and cons.
He was perfectly clear on what he should and shouldn’t do.
A clock was nice, but he would never get into a conflict with this many people over one.
As Sierra and the others stared at Nathan, he saw them too.
But Nathan didn’t greet them, nor did he show any sign of wanting their help.
He was even subtly trying to signal them with his eyes, telling them to leave quickly.
’He doesn’t want our help.’
’Is he afraid we’ll get dragged into this?’
’He’s a loyal friend, at least.’
As Sierra was thinking this, she was about to step forward when a young woman in a short slip dress walked out of a shop that sold spring couplets.
The young woman wore a short black slip dress and knee-high boots. Her long, seaweed-like hair cascaded down her back, reaching her waist.
Her hair was of fine quality, like satin, shimmering softly under the lights.
The young woman had an excellent figure, fair skin, and beautiful features, all accentuated by exquisite makeup.
She looked like an exquisitely crafted porcelain doll.
Before the apocalypse, it wasn’t uncommon to see young women dressed like this.
Anyone with a bit of money, time, and energy could make themselves look this good.
But this was the apocalypse!
Even in the relative safety of the Subterra, you could count on one hand the number of women who could maintain such a polished and beautiful appearance.
And anyone who could pull it off was either powerful or highly capable.
This young woman was clearly the former.
She walked with a light step, her hands clasped behind her back. With her chin tilted slightly up, revealing a swan-like neck, she carried herself with the pride of an elegant white swan.
"Nathan Thorne, there’s no one I, Claire Vance, want that I can’t have. I suggest you come along quietly. It would be a shame if you got hurt. You may have a Healing Ability, but you should know the old saying: a healer can’t heal themself. How awful would it be to be stuck in bed recovering? Just come with me quietly, and I guarantee your life will only get better. And not just you—your parents will be given important roles, and your whole family’s standard of living will be far better than it is now. Of course, that includes your friends. I can offer them better jobs and better compensation. What do you say?"
Hearing Claire Vance’s speech, Sierra felt a complicated mix of emotions, and her expression became difficult to read.
’She’d thought Nathan had offended someone. She never expected him to get poached.’
’This was Nathan, of all people!’
’Nathan, who was prone to fits of madness, was actually being targeted by someone. They were even treating him like some respectable gentleman to be snatched away.’
’How did things get so surreal?’
As Sierra was lost in thought, she heard people nearby begin to whisper.
"That’s the young lady of the Vance Family! For her to take an interest in him... what kind of insane luck is that! Why am I never that lucky?"
"What insane luck? Didn’t you hear? He has a Healing Ability. You know how useful and rare that is, right? You think the Vance Family’s young lady is an idiot? That she’d try to snatch just any man she sees?"
"Come to think of it, this isn’t the first time Lady Vance has publicly tried to snatch someone. I used to think she was just a nymphomaniac who couldn’t control herself around men. But looking back, every single person she’s gone after has been a powerful Superpower User! I heard they all ended up doing a lot for the Vance Family!"
"Whoa! So you’re saying Lady Vance is just putting on an act? That this is all for the good of the Vance Family?"
"What else could it be? Could someone being groomed as the future head of the Vance Family really be an airhead?"
"That’s true..."
These people weren’t speaking loudly, but since Sierra was standing right in the crowd, she heard every word of their conversation.
Knowing the full story now, Sierra’s perception of Claire Vance shifted.
Just a moment ago, she had been wondering how a woman as beautiful and powerful as Claire Vance could resort to kidnapping someone in broad daylight.
Now she understood that it was all just a disguise, a tactic.
If it were anyone else being snatched, Sierra would have just watched the drama unfold without passing judgment.
But the person being snatched was Nathan, and she couldn’t just stand by and do nothing.
Meanwhile, Nathan was glaring at Claire Vance, his face dark. "I have a job, and I can support myself. I don’t need your help, so let me go!"
