Teaming Up with My Enemy to Rule the Apocalypse

Chapter 228: Compared to Zombies, Aberrant Beasts Seem Much Dumber

When Nathan Thorne didn’t answer, the man assumed he hadn’t heard clearly and repeated himself.

"Why don’t you just heal me completely? Why leave some of the injury? If you heal me all the way, it won’t leave a scar, right?"

When he’d heard the man the first time, Nathan Thorne could have passed it off as mishearing.

But now that he’d said it again, Nathan Thorne knew he hadn’t misheard. The man really had a screw loose.

"I’m using my Superpower to treat you," Nathan Thorne said coolly. "But my Superpower isn’t inexhaustible."

"What do you mean?"

"My point is, there are a lot of other people here. They’re all injured and need treatment, too. If I use up too much of my Superpower on you, I won’t be able to heal many of the others. Why don’t you ask them if they’d agree to that?"

Initially, everyone else had been watching the two of them as if they were watching a good show.

But after hearing what Nathan Thorne said, the looks in their eyes all changed.

He was right!

This wasn’t just about Nathan Thorne; it was about them, too!

Everyone was injured and waiting for treatment. What gave this guy the right to demand special treatment?

If he gets special treatment, what happens to the rest of us?

People are usually like that.

When people think something has nothing to do with them, they can stand by and watch with a clear conscience, not offering any opinion.

But the moment they realize their own interests are at stake, everything changes!

"How can you be so selfish?"

"Exactly! You’re not the only one who’s hurt. If he only treats you, what are we supposed to do?"

"You’re worried about whether you’ll have a scar on your face, but have you stopped to think that some of us might be in mortal danger?"

Assailed by the crowd’s rebukes, the man no longer dared to stubbornly confront Nathan Thorne.

He hadn’t even considered that.

It wasn’t intentional at all!

’Nathan Thorne clearly knew but didn’t warn me. He even deliberately riled up the crowd against me. He’s a terrible person!’

As he thought this, his gaze toward Nathan Thorne filled with resentment.

Nathan Thorne couldn’t stand being looked at like that for even a second.

"What is it? Why are you looking at me like that?"

"Are you resentful because I wouldn’t heal you completely? Am I in the wrong for saving you?"

Nathan Thorne had never been a good-tempered person, and he certainly wasn’t about to let anyone walk all over him.

He was saving these people, and while he didn’t expect them to be eternally grateful, he absolutely wouldn’t allow them to act high and mighty or order him around.

"If you all think saving you is an unnecessary effort, then I can just do nothing. We’re all Superpower Users here. I don’t have to go out of my way to save you, especially if it’s just going to be a thankless job!"

Seeing that Nathan Thorne was genuinely angry, the others still waiting for treatment grew anxious.

"Nathan Thorne, don’t be angry! We definitely didn’t mean that!"

"That’s right! It’s an honor that you’re willing to use your Superpower to save us. We’re more grateful than we can say! How could we possibly have a problem with you?"

"Exactly! He’s the one with the problem. He’s just greedy. It has absolutely nothing to do with you, so don’t think otherwise!"

Having heard what he wanted to hear, Nathan Thorne was finally satisfied.

"Fine. Since you’ve all said so, I don’t want to hear a single word about me not doing my best from now on. If I hear even one complaint, I don’t care who it comes from, I’ll stop treating all of you."

’This was collective punishment!’

The crowd complained bitterly in their hearts.

’We can control ourselves, but we can’t control others!’

’How could Nathan Thorne do this?’

’Isn’t this punishing everyone for one person’s mistake?’

Although they thought this, they didn’t dare let any of it show on their faces.

They had always seen Nathan Thorne smiling, always eating and talking, and had assumed he was good-natured.

They never expected he was nothing like that at all!

Seeing that no one said another word, Nathan Thorne took it as their agreement and walked over to the next injured person.

It takes a while to describe these events, but in reality, they only took two or three minutes.

For the people inside the vehicle, two or three minutes was nothing—just enough time to exchange a few words.

But for those outside, it was a completely different story.

Never mind two or three minutes; a lapse in concentration for even two or three seconds could lead to injury, or even death.

They had to remain on high alert at all times, paying constant attention to their surroundings just to avoid getting hurt.

Sierra Sullivan was not having an easy time of it either.

Candice Tate was powerful, but her attack style was somewhat like a Mage.

She stood rooted to one spot, unleashing attacks on the enemies around her.

She was great at long range, but it was incredibly dangerous if anyone got close to her.

Sierra and Jayce could only keep Candice Tate between them, remaining vigilant of their surroundings at all times.

The moment they spotted any zombie or Aberrant Beast trying to approach Candice Tate, they immediately moved to eliminate it.

As time went on, Sierra noticed that some zombies were indeed targeting Candice Tate specifically.

They would lurk in the shadows, waiting for an opportunity to strike.

The instant they saw an opening, they would charge straight for Candice Tate.

Their sharp claws looked as if they wanted nothing more than to sink into Candice Tate’s neck.

Though Sierra and Jayce managed to stop them every time, the repeated attempts began to weigh heavily on them.

’Why was the "brain" controlling these zombies targeting Candice Tate?’

’Was it really targeting her, or was there some other motive?’

Sierra couldn’t figure it out right then, nor did she have the time to dwell on it.

Ultimately, the number of zombies was finite.

Once the last zombie was struck down, things became much easier.

Compared to the zombies, the Aberrant Beasts seemed a bit dim-witted and were easier to handle.

By the time the last Aberrant Beast was killed, Sierra was completely exhausted.

She forced herself to stay on her feet, refusing to let herself collapse onto the ground.

But looking around, she saw many people had already collapsed to the ground, panting heavily.

It wasn’t just because their Superpowers were depleted; it was also the relief of having survived the ordeal. Once they let their guard down, they naturally had no strength left.

Hector Grant’s expression was grim as well, but he remained standing ramrod straight. He even frowned, looking with displeasure at those sitting on the ground. "All of you, get up!"

Hearing this, the crowd groaned.

’The Aberrant Beasts and zombies are all gone. Why can’t he just let us rest for a bit?’

Though they didn’t voice their complaints, their expressions said it all.

Hector Grant’s expression remained cold. "How do you know more Aberrant Beasts aren’t on their way? If they did show up, would you even be able to get back on your feet?"

At his words, the expressions of the crowd changed instantly. One by one, they gritted their teeth and forced themselves up from the ground.

Though they didn’t want to admit it, they had to: Hector Grant was right, and he was looking out for their own good.

Under Hector Grant’s command, they quickly extracted the Crystal Cores from the brains of all the Aberrant Beasts.

As for the Crystal Cores in the zombies’ heads, they couldn’t be wasted, of course. Those were extracted as well, just placed into a separate bag.
