Chapter 198: 100,000 Contribution Points
Sierra Sullivan was still wondering about the gun’s power when she heard Candice Tate’s voice.
"One, two, three, four, five... five zeros!" Candice gasped, looking up at Sierra. "Sis, does this cost one hundred thousand Contribution Points?"
Sierra: ????
Sierra had been so focused on the feature description that she hadn’t noticed the price tag next to it.
It wasn’t until she heard what Candice said that Sierra instinctively looked over.
It would have been better if she hadn’t looked. The moment she saw it, Sierra was completely stunned.
’When I first heard Candice state the price, I instinctively thought the girl was too young to understand and had misread it or missed something.’
But now, seeing it with her own eyes, she realized the number written on the card really was one hundred thousand!
Five zeros were lined up neatly, with no commas in between.
A gun like this not only consumed Crystal Cores, but its actual power wasn’t even clear, yet it cost a hundred thousand Contribution Points!
Sierra looked at the other items and saw that the other weapons were only more expensive, not less.
After looking around, she realized the one in front of her, priced at one hundred thousand Contribution Points, was actually the cheapest.
’This is just...’
’They could just rob you outright, but instead, they offer you a gun.’
’How thoughtful of them.’
No wonder they dared to display these weapons for sale right out in the open, unafraid of causing trouble or riots in the Subterra. It turns out ordinary people couldn’t afford them anyway.
Not only could ordinary people not afford them, but even the not-so-ordinary couldn’t either.
Since she couldn’t afford it anyway, Sierra lost interest. "Let’s go!"
Just as they turned to leave, before they had even started for the door, another group of people walked in.
Leading the group was a young man and woman.
Following behind them, judging by their clothes and bearing, were what looked like bodyguards.
The pair walked in front, their postures relaxed, strolling as if they were in their own living room rather than a shop.
Soon, the young woman walked up to where Sierra and her group were and also looked at the gun Sierra had just been examining.
The clerk, who had previously ignored Sierra and the others, now came jogging over. "Miss Aldridge, you’re here! Would you like to see this gun? It’s the latest model—small, lightweight, and perfect for a lady."
Jenny Aldridge lifted her chin. "Bring it here. Let me see."
"Of course!"
The clerk immediately took the gun out of the display case and presented it to Jenny Aldridge with both hands.
Jenny Aldridge took it casually, first examining it with both hands, then switching to twirling it with just one.
Finally, she nodded in satisfaction. "It is quite light, much lighter than the one I was using before. Nolan, what do you think?"
Nolan Crawford walked over, took the gun from Jenny Aldridge’s hand, and gave it a casual glance. "Only you girls would care about something like this. What does it matter if it’s small and light? The important things are its killing power and how many rounds it can fire in succession. That’s what really matters..."
Nolan went on and on, but when he saw Jenny pout, her face full of displeasure, he quickly changed his tune. "Of course, being small has its advantages. It’s more convenient to carry around, so you can protect yourself if you run into danger. Since you like it, let’s just buy it!"
Finally hearing what she wanted to hear, Jenny Aldridge beamed. "Okay! Let’s buy it then!"
No sooner had she spoken than a bodyguard from behind her stepped forward to handle the transaction with the clerk.
Jenny Aldridge held the gun, turning it over and over as if she couldn’t get enough of it.
"Nolan, let’s find a place to test this gun’s power, shall we? What if it’s all for show and useless in a fight?"
"Alright! Whatever you say!"
"Then let’s go! To the firing range!"
Jenny Aldridge was truly in a hurry. Before the words had even left her mouth, she was already pulling Nolan Crawford out of the shop.
Seeing this, the other bodyguards quickly followed behind them.
The group had arrived as quickly as they had left.
If it weren’t for one bodyguard who was still at the counter finalizing the purchase, Sierra would have thought the whole thing had been a dream.
After one last glance at the bodyguard, Sierra and her group finally headed outside.
Once outside, Sierra sighed. "No matter the era, this world is never short of rich people!"
"Sis, I’ll work hard to earn Contribution Points! When I have enough, I’ll buy it for you!"
Before Sierra could say anything, Jayce pinched Candice Tate’s little cheek. "Whatever your sister wants, I’ll buy it for her. You don’t have to!"
Candice huffed. "Why? Why don’t I have to buy it? I want to buy it! What you buy is what you buy, and what I buy is what I buy! It’s not the same!
"Besides, I earn the same number of Contribution Points as you every month now. It’s not certain who’ll be able to buy it for Sis first!"
Candice, acting like a little grown-up, lifted her chin high, her small face filled with pride.
’She wouldn’t admit defeat just because Jayce was an adult!’
’She just wanted to be good to her sis!’
’Really, really good to her sis!’
’And no one could stop her from being good to her sis!’
Jayce was about to say more, but Sierra stopped him.
’Candice is just a child. It’s a good thing for a child to have her own goals and ideas, so why argue with her about it now!’
Jayce fell silent, but when Candice wasn’t paying attention, he leaned close to Sierra’s ear. "Sierra, I’ll work hard to earn Contribution Points and buy it for you soon."
Hearing this, Sierra was touched but also found it a little funny. "What are you talking about? When did I ever say I wanted it? Why would you buy me something I don’t even want? Do you really have so many Contribution Points you don’t know what to do with them? That gun might not even be as useful as our Superpowers."
’And she definitely wasn’t saying this just because of sour grapes.’
’How could a mere worldly possession compare to a Superpower that moves at your will?’
Jayce, however, agreed with that point.
Sierra glanced at Jayce with a smile. "Besides, it’s one hundred thousand Contribution Points. How long would you have to slave away to afford that? Be careful you don’t become the base’s beast of burden!"
Jayce froze.
’He’d only been thinking about competing with Candice and had forgotten about that.’
’To earn one hundred thousand Contribution Points, even if he worked twenty-four hours a day and made ten thousand a month, it would still take him almost a year to save up enough.’
’Slaving away for the base for nearly a year... all for a single gun...’
’Just thinking about it was terrifying.’
But—
"If you really wanted it, I would do it."
’So what if I had to slave away like a beast of burden?’
’Nothing is more important than Sierra!’
’As long as it’s something Sierra wants, I’ll give it my all, even if it costs me everything, to make sure she gets it.’
Seeing the determination on Jayce’s face, Sierra’s heart warmed. "I know, but I don’t want it. So don’t think about it anymore. Let’s go. We should head back; it’s about time for lunch!"
