Chapter 196 - 148: My Brother Happens to Be Divorced, Why Don’t You Two Get Together?
"But Junjun isn’t interested in him at all. He clings like glue and you can’t shake him off," said Li Yueting.
"Brother, speed up. Let’s try to lose him."
"Alright."
Lin Jiang sped up, changed lanes a few times, and took a detour down a side road until Wang Xuyang’s car was no longer in sight.
"Those two, Wang Xuyang and Tang Jinming, are so persistent. Everyone else has given up one by one, but those two are still at it. They’re so clingy."
"So there’s another pursuer, huh."
"There’s also Tang Jinming, our student council president. Both of their families have a bit of money, so they both think they’ve got what it takes and want to try their luck with our Miss Xu."
Li Yueting leaned over the front seats. "Brother, didn’t you have a lot of girls chasing you when you were in school? How did you always turn them down?"
"None of the girls who chased me were too ugly, so I didn’t turn any of them down."
"Damn, you player."
"That’s why I’m a little envious of you."
"Envious that I’m loyal in my relationships?"
"No, I’m envious that you don’t have to worry about this kind of thing."
"Hey! I’ll kill you! I’m telling my aunt when we get home."
Watching the brother and sister bicker, Xu Yingjun couldn’t stop laughing.
"Brother Jiang is just joking with you. Why are you taking it so seriously? You need a sense of humor."
Li Yueting rolled her eyes. "So you two are ganging up on me now, is that it?"
"No, we’re not."
Along the way, the three of them chatted and laughed. Lin Jiang asked:
"How’s your studying going? Do you have any target schools in mind? Where are you planning to apply?"
"I want to get into Zhonghai University of Finance and Economics."
"Huh?! You’re from a second-tier university, and you want to get into Zhonghai University of Finance and Economics for grad school? You must be dreaming. Can’t you be a little more realistic?"
"I’m already being plenty down-to-earth, okay? Junjun is even more ambitious. She wants to get into Zhonghai Jiaotong University."
"If a person has no dreams, what’s the difference between them and a salted fish? What if I actually get in?"
"You’re too much! Junjun says she wants to get into Jiaoda, and you say she has a dream. I say I want to get into the University of Finance and Economics, and you say I’m dreaming. I ought to strangle you."
"Hey, hey, hey, Tongtong, stop fooling around. Brother Jiang is driving," Xu Yingjun said, gently trying to calm her down.
"See that? Just the way she says ’Brother Jiang’ is something you could learn from for a lifetime."
"She’s faking that cutesy voice."
"I’m not faking it."
"You were even doing it right before we left."
"I was talking about curling my eyelashes."
"So you two are ganging up on me, huh? Fine. My brother’s divorced now, so you two can just get together."
"Oh, honestly," Xu Yingjun said with feigned annoyance. "What nonsense are you talking about?"
A blush crept onto Xu Yingjun’s cheeks. "Your grades are better than mine. I think you have a much better chance of getting into Jiaoda than I do."
"The main thing is, my circumstances can’t compare to yours. Even if you don’t get in, you have your family to fall back on. I don’t. I have to play it safe."
"I’m not planning on relying on my family either. If I don’t get in this year, I’ll just try again next year," Xu Yingjun said.
"Still, I have to be more practical. That’s Jiaoda we’re talking about. The people in there are all geniuses. I have no confidence I could get in."
"If you don’t even have confidence, you’ll never accomplish anything," Lin Jiang said.
"In a little while, I’ll find a tutor for you so you can really get to studying."
"No, no, I’m very clear about where I stand. Getting into Zhonghai University of Finance and Economics is already my ceiling."
"Just give it a try. If it doesn’t work out, you can try again next year. After all, the caliber of the university is different, and the people you’ll meet in the future will be different too."
Li Yueting slumped back in her seat like a deflated balloon.
"I can’t even dare to think about Jiaoda. I’ll just have to see how my studying goes first."
Lin Jiang nodded and didn’t say anything else.
’An undergraduate from a second-tier university trying to get into Zhonghai Jiaotong University for grad school... it really is a bit of a pipe dream.’
’Even if her grades are usually good, the platform at Hang City University of Finance and Economics is a step below. With just her own efforts, her chances are slim, to say the least.’
’But if there’s a chance, you have to take it. Besides, there have been plenty of precedents like this before.’
’I’ll find her a good tutor and have her cram for a while. If not this year, she can try again next year.’
’Getting in would be for the best, of course. If she can’t, it would be easy enough for me to arrange a job for her.’
’I can’t just stand by and watch her struggle, after all.’
