Chapter 247: The Next Day
Damon laid Ariel on the bed.
Her eyes were already closed, her breathing slow and steady. She curled into the sheets without a word, her body spent from the night's activities.
He stood there for a moment, watching her sleep.
Then he turned and walked to the bathroom.
The cold water from the basin washed the sweat and fluids from his skin.
He dried himself with a clean cloth and pulled on fresh robes.
Dawn was still hours away.
The mansion was quiet.
He stepped out of the bedroom and into the main hall. The embers in the fireplace cast a dim orange glow across the room.
Selene sat in the corner.
She was fully dressed, her ice-blue eyes fixed on him.
"Couldn't sleep?" he asked.
"I felt you moving." she said. "And I heard everything."
He walked over and sat beside her on the bench.
"Jealous?"
Selene's lips pressed into a thin line.
"I'm not jealous. I'm curious." she said.
"You've collected more women in a short time than most cultivators do in a lifetime. And you're about to leave for a tournament where you'll face the strongest young cultivators on the continent."
She paused.
"And you're not worried."
It wasn't a question.
"I have no reason to worry." Damon said.
Selene studied him.
Her gaze was sharp, analytical, the same look she gave her students during training.
"You're hiding something." she said.
"Your cultivation. Your power. I can feel it now that we've... connected. There's more to you than you show."
Damon met her eyes.
"There is."
He didn't elaborate.
Selene waited. When no explanation came, she sighed and leaned back.
"Fine. Keep your secrets. But when we reach Solaris City, you'll need to be careful. The Reventon family has deep pockets and longer reach than you think."
"I know."
"Do you? Kai was just the beginning. The Reventon family controls half the black market in the Eastern Continent. If they can't kill you in the tournament, they'll try something else."
Damon's golden eyes glowed faintly in the dim light.
"Let him try."
Selene shook her head.
"Arrogant."
"It's confidence." he corrected.
A small smile tugged at her lips.
"Same thing, most days."
She stood and walked toward her room.
"Get some rest. You leave in two days."
She disappeared into the hallway.
Damon sat alone in the dim hall, the fire crackling softly.
*****
Morning light streamed through the windows.
Damon woke to find Neko curled on his chest in her cat form, her small body rising and falling with each breath.
Ariel was still asleep beside him.
He gently lifted Neko and set her on the pillow, then swung his legs over the edge of the bed.
The mansion was already alive with activity.
He dressed and walked to the main hall.
Mio and Mia had returned from their mother's residence.
They sat at the table with Seraphina, Alena, and Flare, bowls of steaming porridge in front of them.
"Morning." Mio said, her voice bright.
"Morning." Damon replied.
He took a seat at the head of the table.
Selene entered from the kitchen, carrying a tray of fresh bread and fruit.
She set it down without a word and sat at the opposite end.
The atmosphere was comfortable.
Damon found himself enjoying it more than he expected.
"a few days until we leave." he said.
"We need to be ready."
"We're ready." Mia said.
"Mio and I have been training with mother's techniques. We've mastered the next level of the technique."
"Good."
Seraphina set down her spoon.
"What about the tournament structure? Do we know who we're facing?"
Damon shook his head.
"Not yet. But it doesn't matter."
He looked around the table.
His women.
His harem.
Each one of them was a weapon he had forged.
"The Eastern Continent Tournament is just the beginning." he said.
"After this, we'll be known. We'll have resources. Power. Influence."
He paused.
"And I'll need all of you by my side."
Alena's cheeks flushed.
Flare looked away, but the tips of her ears were red.
Mio and Mia exchanged a glance and smiled.
Selene's expression remained neutral, but her eyes softened.
"We'll be there." Ariel said.
She had woken and walked into the hall, her hair still messy, her robes loosely tied.
She sat beside Damon and leaned into his shoulder.
He wrapped an arm around her.
"Let's eat." he said.
"We have a long day ahead."
*****
The morning passed with training.
Damon worked with each of them individually.
Ariel practiced her water control, shaping the water into a precise blades that could cut through stone.
Mio and Mia sparred together, their movements fluid and deadly, shadows and void energy intertwining.
Seraphina meditated, cycling the Azure Dragon Bloodline through her meridians.
Alena worked at her alchemy station, grinding herbs and mixing compounds.
Flare sat alone in the courtyard, her flames flickering around her as she practiced the revised technique Damon had taught her.
He watched her from the doorway.
Her brow was furrowed in concentration.
The flames in her palms were steady now, controlled.
She was learning.
He stepped into the courtyard.
"Better." he said.
Flare looked up.
Her amber eyes met his.
"I still can't control the Phoenix Bloodline." she admitted.
"When I try to draw on it, the flames surge too fast. I almost lost control twice this morning."
"Then don't force it." Damon said.
"Let it come to you."
He sat across from her on the stone bench.
"The Phoenix Bloodline is about rebirth. Not destruction. You've been treating it like a weapon when it's a foundation."
Flare's lips parted.
"A foundation for what?"
"For becoming something more." he said.
He reached out and took her hand.
She flinched but didn't pull away.
"When the tournament starts, you won't need to rely on the bloodline. You have your flames. Your techniques. Your training. The bloodline will awaken when it's ready."
Flare stared at their joined hands.
"You really believe that?"
"I know it."
She looked up at him.
Her eyes were searching.
"Why do you care so much? I told you I'm not yours."
Damon smiled.
"You will be."
He released her hand and stood.
"Rest today."
He walked back into the mansion.
Behind him, Flare watched him go.
Her hand lingered where his had been.
