Chapter 242: Be Prepared
Sect Leader Hector’s voice cut through pulling Damon’s attention back from the distant platform where Lark still stood frozen.
"Gather around," Hector called, his deep voice carrying easily across the stone floor.
Damon turned, his women falling into formation behind him like a well-drilled unit.
Ariel’s hand slipped from his, but she stayed close, her shoulder brushing his arm.
Hector descended from the elevated judging platform, his azure robes billowing with each step.
Mei followed at a measured distance, her purple eyes flickering with amusement as she watched the group assemble.
Selene walked beside her, expression unreadable, her platinum-white hair catching the dying light.
"The Eastern Continent Tournament begins in Solaris City in two weeks," Hector said, stopping before them.
"We depart in three days. That gives you time to rest, prepare, and collect your rewards."
Damon nodded, keeping his posture respectful.
"You’ll be accompanied by Lady Mei and Elder Selene," Hector continued, gesturing to the two women.
"They will oversee your journey and handle any complications that arise along the way."
Mei smiled, slow and predatory.
Selene said nothing, but her frosty gaze lingered on Damon a moment longer than necessary.
"I will join you when the semi-finals begin," Hector said, his tone carrying the quiet certainty of a man who had watched countless generations rise and fall.
His ancient eyes swept briefly across Damon’s face, measuring something unspoken in the set of his jaw.
"I expect to see at least that much from you."
The words settled over the group like a stone dropped into still water.
Not a threat, exactly.
But a standard — one that carried the full weight of the Azure Dragon Sect’s name and reputation behind it.
Damon could feel the expectation radiating from them, solid and immovable.
He held the Sect Leader’s gaze for a beat, then bowed, one hand pressed flat over his chest in the formal gesture of a disciple accepting a charge.
"We will not disappoint, Sect Leader."
Ariel, Mio, Mia, Seraphina, Alena, Lark, and Flare bowed in unison behind him, their movements synchronized by weeks of training together.
Hector studied them for a long moment, his ancient eyes scanning each face with quiet assessment.
Whatever he saw seemed to satisfy him, because he nodded once, sharply.
"Good. Tomorrow, you may visit the sect treasury to claim your prizes from the tournament. After that, rest. Prepare. The road to Solaris City is long, and the tournament will demand everything you have."
He turned, robes swirling.
"The Azure Dragon Sect expects greatness from you."
With that, he rose into the air, spiritual energy flaring beneath his feet as he ascended toward the peak of the sect.
The other elders followed, dispersing like birds taking flight.
Only Mei and Selene remained.

Mei stepped forward, her qipao dress clinging to every curve as she moved with the fluid grace of a predator who had already caught her prey.
Her deep purple eyes swept over the group before settling on Mio and Mia.
"Daughters," she said, her voice carrying a warmth that seemed almost out of place given her usual demeanor. "Come to my residence tonight. We have things to discuss."
Mio’s high ponytail swished as she tilted her head to one side, her bright purple eyes blinking with the particular brand of cheerful confusion that was entirely her own.
"What kind of things, Mother?"
Mei’s smile widened by a fraction, slow and deliberate, the kind of smile that contained far more meaning than it revealed.
"The kind," she said smoothly, letting the words settle in the air like perfume, "that require privacy."
Mia, standing just half a step behind her sister as always, said nothing at first.
A soft flush crept up the line of her pale cheeks, staining them a quiet rose, but she dipped her chin in a small, composed nod, her straight curtain of deep purple hair falling slightly forward with the motion.
She did not protest.
She rarely did, when their mother spoke in that particular tone.
Mei’s gaze lingered on the twins for only a moment longer before it drifted, almost casually, across the assembled group.
It moved with the unhurried ease of someone who had never needed to rush for anything in her life, and it settled, inevitably, on Damon.
Something shifted behind those deep purple eyes — a flicker of assessment, perhaps, or quiet appreciation — there and gone before it could be properly named.
"Take care of them until then, young man," she said.
"I always do," Damon replied, meeting her gaze without flinching.
Mei laughed, a low, throaty sound, and then she vanished, her form dissolving into a swirl of purple mist that scattered on the wind.
*****
Selene approached, and the temperature around them dropped several degrees.
In her arms, Neko lay curled in her cat form, her silver-grey stripes catching the light as her fluffy tail twitched lazily.
Selene’s frosty eyes met Damon’s, and for a moment, the cold mask she wore seemed to crack, just slightly.
"I will wait for you at my mansion," she said, her voice carrying the familiar edge of frost.
"Neko will stay with me until you return."
Neko lifted her head, her silver eyes blinking sleepily at Damon.
"Master," she mewed, her voice carrying that strange, resonant quality that always seemed to bypass her small form.
"I will guard the cold lady carefully," Neko added, her silver ears swivelling with great self-importance, as though she had just accepted a sacred duty.
Selene’s eyebrow twitched almost imperceptibly, but she said nothing, her expression remaining the picture of glacial composure.
Damon stepped forward and reached out, running his fingers through Neko’s soft fur. She purred, pressing her head into his palm.
"Be good," he said softly, giving her ears one last gentle scratch before withdrawing his hand.
Neko’s silver eyes blinked up at him with an expression of tremendous solemnity, as though the instruction carried the weight of a sacred vow.
"Always," she replied, her small, resonant voice utterly sincere.
And then she tucked her nose beneath her tail and curled herself back into the crook of Selene’s arms like a cat who had already decided the matter was settled.
Selene turned without another word and walked toward the path leading up the mountain, her white robes trailing behind her like a frozen waterfall.
