Damon looked at Flare as she stared at the steady flame in her palm.

"What do you want to do now?" Damon asked, his golden eyes watching her with quiet patience.

Flare slowly closed her fingers around the steady flame, extinguishing it without so much as a flicker of effort.

The light vanished, plunging her palm back into shadow.

"I want to cultivate more," she said, her tone carrying the focused resolve of someone who had just touched something rare and didn’t intend to let it slip away.

"I need to stabilize this new method before I lose the feel for it. If I stop now, it’ll take me twice as long to find it again."

Damon understood that well enough. Breakthroughs in cultivation were like catching smoke — the moment your grip loosened, they dissolved into nothing.

He gave a single, unhurried nod.

"Then stay. Take whatever time you need." He gestured toward the open expanse of the platform.

"I’ll wait at the edge. You won’t even know I’m here."

Without waiting for a response, he turned and began walking toward the far edge of the stone platform, his black robes shifting soundlessly around him.

The late light caught the silver trim along his collar as he moved, unhurried and composed.

His foot touched the first step down from the platform’s raised surface, the stone cool and firm beneath his boot.

Then the ground beneath him rumbled.

A pillar of flame exploded from the earth behind him, shooting straight into the sky with a deafening roar.

The heat washed over him in a wave, hot enough to singe his robes.

Damon spun around.

Flare was on her feet, eyes wide, staring at the column of fire that had erupted from the center of the platform where she had been sitting moments ago.

"What the hell?"

The flame didn’t fade.

It twisted and spread, arcing outward in a perfect circle.

The fire flowed like liquid, rising higher and higher until it formed a wall of flame that surrounded the entire platform.

Damon stood motionless for a half second, the wall of flame roaring around them on all sides, sealing off every angle of escape.

The heat pressed against his skin like a living thing, relentless and suffocating, and the acrid smell of scorched stone filled the air.

Flare turned to face him, her amber eyes wild with alarm, her earlier composure stripped away entirely.

"What in the hells just happened?"

Her voice cut through the roar of the flames, sharp and demanding.

"What did you do?"

"Nothing."

Damon kept his voice level, already turning away from her as his gaze swept methodically along the wall of fire that enclosed them.

The flames were tall, easily three times his height, and they burned with an unnatural steadiness that no ordinary qi discharge produced.

His Incubus Celestial Eyes activated automatically, searching for the source, the mechanism, anything.

But the flames were pure qi. No formation. No array. No hidden trigger.

"I didn’t do anything," Damon said, his voice steady even as the heat pressed in from every side.

Flare’s eyes snapped to him.

"Then what in the hells is this?"

"I don’t know."

He kept his gaze on the wall, watching it.

The wall pulsed once, a single deep throb like a heartbeat, and the temperature spiked sharply enough that Damon felt the air itself shimmer against his skin.

Then he felt it. A shift in the qi. Subtle at first, almost imperceptible, like a current changing direction beneath a still river’s surface. The fire qi saturating the air was no longer pressing outward or burning in place.

It was moving.

Not randomly, not spreading in the chaotic way natural flame would.

Every tongue of fire, every ribbon of heat, every last particle of burning qi was drawing inward, spiralling, converging on a single point.

All of it rushing toward Flare.

The flames on the wall stretched and thinned, pulling away from the barrier and streaming through the air like rivers of light.

They converged on Flare’s body, pouring into her pores, her mouth, her eyes.

Flare’s breath caught in a sharp, strangled gasp, the sound torn from her throat like something involuntary, something beyond her control.

Her entire body seized, every muscle locking rigid at once as the torrent of fire qi crashed through her meridians with the force of a collapsing dam.

She stood frozen, arms stiff at her sides, spine arched backward by the sheer pressure of it.

Then her eyes rolled back, the vivid amber of her irises disappearing entirely until only white remained.

The fire qi flooded into her without mercy, without control, without any regard for her cultivation base or her meridians.

Damon moved.

He grabbed her shoulders, but the moment he touched her, a burst of heat threw his hand back.

His palm was red, almost blistered.

"Flare!"

She didn’t respond.

Her body was shaking now, trembling violently as the fire qi continued to pour into her.

Her skin began to glow from within, veins of orange and red lighting up beneath the surface like cracks in a dying ember.

Damon’s mind raced.

’System. What’s happening to her?’
