Chapter 188: The Black Pyramid
The darkness swallowed them whole.
Damon activated his Incubus Celestial Eyes and the world shifted into shades of gray and deep crimson.
The interior stretched far wider than the exterior suggested.
A single corridor descended ahead, wide enough for ten people to walk side by side.
The walls were lined with carvings, not decorative but functional, formation scripts that pulsed with slow rhythmic energy like a buried heartbeat.
"They’re active," Mia’s voice came from somewhere in the shadows. "I can feel them."
Damon could see them too.
The scripts lined every surface, ceiling, floor, walls, all connected in a single massive network.
"Stay close," he said.
Ariel moved to his side, trident held ready. Her water aura flickered in the strange light. Seraphina summoned wind around her fists while Mio nocked an arrow without a target.
They moved forward.
The corridor descended at a steep angle.
The air grew colder with each step, a sharp contrast to the desert heat outside. Their breath fogged in front of them.
Mio rubbed her arms. "Why would a pyramid in the middle of a desert be this cold?"
No one answered.
They walked for what felt like ten minutes before the corridor opened into a vast circular chamber.
The ceiling vanished into darkness above.
Pillars of black stone rose from the floor, each carved with the same formation scripts as the corridor. At the center sat a pedestal, and on that pedestal rested a single object.
A sword fragment.
The Chaos Devourer in Damon’s storage ring vibrated violently against his finger.
Not a sound but a sensation, a pull so strong it made his hand twitch.
"What is that?" Seraphina asked.
Damon studied the fragment through his Celestial Eyes. Information flooded his vision.
[Chaos Devourer Sword Fragment, Third Piece]
[Grade: Pre-Creation Era]
[Status: Sealed]
His jaw tightened. A third piece.
He had found one at the auction in Solaris City.
One from the system.
This was another.
’The sword is calling to its own piece,’ he thought.
He stepped forward.
Mio grabbed his arm.
"The formations on the pillars connect to the pedestal. If you touch it, something will trigger."
A low grinding rumble interrupted her.
The pillars glowed brighter, their scripts spinning with accelerating energy.
The floor shifted. Sections of stone rose and fell, creating a maze of moving platforms around the pedestal.
The gaps between them revealed nothing but blackness below.
"Nobody move," Damon said.
The platforms settled into a pattern. Some rose ten feet, others sank into the floor.
Red light pulsed from the gaps.
Damon’s Celestial Eyes traced a path through the chaos, a sequence of stable platforms leading to the center.
But the pattern shifted every few seconds, stable stones sinking while others rose.
"It’s a test," Seraphina said. "Or a trap."
"Both," Damon answered.
He studied the timing.
Three seconds between shifts. Stable platforms held for exactly two seconds before changing.
"I can make it," he said.
"You don’t know what happens when you grab the fragment," Ariel said.
"The formations might trigger something worse."
She was right.
But the Chaos Devourer’s pull was unbearable now, a constant pressure behind his eyes.
Damon pulled the sword from his storage ring.
The blade materialized in his hand, its dark surface drinking the ambient light.
The two fragments already bonded to his soul hummed with recognition.
"I’ll use the sword to test the pedestal before touching it," he said. "If anything triggers, I’ll have space to react."
Mio opened her mouth to argue.
Damon moved.
He launched forward with Astral Steps, his body blurring across the first gap.
The platform beneath his feet held for two seconds.
He pushed off just as it began to sink, landing on the next stable stone.
The pattern shifted.
He adjusted mid-stride, feet finding the next platform by a fraction of a second.
The Chaos Devourer guided him through instinct rather than words.
The sword knew where to go.
Three more platforms. Two. One.
He landed on the central platform in front of the pedestal.
The fragment sat on a bed of dark crystal. Its edges were jagged, its surface covered in the same ancient inscriptions as the walls.
It looked like broken obsidian, but the power radiating from it was immense.
Damon extended the Chaos Devourer toward the fragment.
The moment the blade touched the crystal bed, the entire chamber shook.
The pillars cracked.
Formation scripts exploded with light.
The moving platforms froze in place. Red glow from the gaps intensified, and from those gaps, something rose.
Hands. Skeletal hands made of the same black stone as the pyramid, clawing upward from the darkness below.
Dozens of them. Then arms. Then torsos. Stone constructs shaped like warriors, pulling themselves onto the platforms with slow grinding movements.
"Constructs!" Mia shouted from the entrance.
Damon counted. Twenty. Thirty. More climbing out every second.
He grabbed the fragment from the pedestal.
The Chaos Devourer screamed in his hand, not in pain but in hunger. The sword wanted to devour the constructs, to consume their energy and grow stronger.
But the constructs were already surrounding the central platform.
Damon looked across the chamber. Ariel, Mio, Mia, and Seraphina stood at the entrance, cut off by the maze of platforms and the rising army of stone warriors.
A skeletal construct lunged at him.
Damon swung. The Chaos Devourer carved through the stone body like paper, the fragment’s energy feeding into the blade on contact. The construct crumbled to dust.
Three more took its place. Damon cut them down. Then five more. Then ten.
But they kept coming.
And from the deepest part of the chamber, something else stirred.
A presence. Ancient. Vast. Awake.
The ground beneath Damon’s feet cracked, and a voice echoed through the chamber, deep and rumbling and filled with rage.
"WHO DARES TOUCH THE FRAGMENT OF CHAOS?"
The stone constructs stopped moving. They turned toward the far wall, where the stone was splitting apart, revealing a passage that hadn’t existed moments before.
Darkness poured from that passage, not the absence of light but something thicker. Something alive.
And from within that darkness, two eyes opened.
