Chapter 196: A Great Sword
"How is our little guest doing in there?" Leon asked, gently caressing the woman’s swollen belly. Or at least, that was what he heard the owner of the body say, as his hand once again moved on its own.
"Oh, she can’t wait to come out," the woman replied with a giggle, dimples appearing on her cheeks.
"She can’t wait? Did she tell you that?" Leon asked with a playful smile.
"Of course. She’s saying she wants to come out quickly and eat lots of chocolate."
"Hahaha." Leon burst into laughter. "Is it really her... or is it her mother who’s craving chocolate?"
"Hmph." The woman puffed out her cheeks in a pout. "We’ll talk about her later. But why are you wearing that outfit at this hour? It’s already evening. Are you going somewhere?"
"Yeah. The village chief told me yesterday that a huge monster has been rampaging nearby recently. He asked for volunteers, so I’m joining today’s expedition."
"A monster?" The woman’s expression immediately turned pale. "What realm is it in?"
"From what I’ve heard... it’s at the peak of the Martial Warrior realm."
"What? Logan, are you serious?" she exclaimed anxiously. "You’re only at the second level of the Martial Apprentice realm! How can you agree to something so dangerous? Our baby is about to be born. We chose this village because your cultivation is low and we wanted a peaceful life away from the conflicts of the cultivation world. Everyone here just wants to live an ordinary life. So how did something like this even happen? Why would a monster that strong appear here out of nowhere?"
Only then did Leon finally understand the truth. He was inside another person’s body, able to do nothing but watch through the owner’s eyes. Or at least that’s what it seemed like at the moment.
And that person’s name...
Logan!
The very same name the mysterious man in Leon’s dream had once used to address him.
And the woman? She also felt strangely familiar. She was clearly Logan’s wife. Yet, looking at her filled Leon’s heart with an indescribable warmth. Leon felt as though he had finally found someone he had lost countless years ago. But why? Leon felt totally puzzled. Wanting to uncover the truth, he silently continued watching.
Meanwhile, Logan, the owner of the body Leon was currently inside, let out a helpless sigh. "I don’t know either. That monster only appeared two days ago, and more than fifty people have already been declared dead. This village lies on the opposite side of the Tenth Heaven from the Shadow Forest, so no one expected a beast like this to appear here."
He paused before continuing. "I do want to live a quiet life. But how can I stay home while innocent people are dying? Besides, two experts from the capital have already arrived. They’re the ones who’ll be fighting the monster directly. People like me are only there as support, making sure the horde of jackals under its control can’t reach the villagers." As he spoke, Logan gently tucked a loose strand of her hair behind her ear.
Even then, the worry in the woman’s eyes didn’t disappear. "But..."
Logan smiled reassuringly before cupping her face with both hands. "I promise. No matter what happens, I’ll come back safely. Alright?"
After a long moment of silence, the woman finally nodded. "Alright... but the moment you think you’re in danger, you run the other way. Promise me."
"Yes, ma’am. Whatever you say." Logan chuckled before leaning forward and gently kissing her forehead.
Just as he turned to leave, the woman suddenly grabbed his wrist. "Wait."
Logan stopped and looked back.
"Don’t go empty-handed. Take your sword with you."
"That greatsword?" Logan laughed helplessly. "If I carry that heavy thing around, I won’t need a monster to kill me. I’ll die from exhaustion first."
"Maybe," she admitted with a small smile. "But you’ve had that sword for as long as you can remember. Didn’t you always say it was your lucky charm? It’s saved your life so many times in ways neither of us could explain."
"Alright, alright. I’ll take it."
Logan knew better than to argue with his wife. Smiling helplessly, he walked into the small storage room beside the bedroom.
As the wooden door creaked open, several ordinary weapons came into view, neatly arranged on wooden racks.
Yet among them, one weapon stood apart.
A massive greatsword rested quietly against the far wall. Time had left its mark upon it. Its once-pristine steel was now weathered and dull, with patches of rust spreading across the broad blade. Deep crimson patterns, resembling ancient runes or veins of flowing blood, stretched from the guard to the tip, contrasting sharply against the dark metal. The crossguard was jagged and menacing, like the outstretched horns of a demon, while the thick blade looked powerful enough to cleave mountains apart.
Despite its worn appearance, the sword radiated an indescribable presence. It wasn’t releasing any aura, nor was it flooding the room with pressure. Yet the moment Leon laid eyes on it, he could feel something sleeping deep within the ancient blade. A terrifying power... Waiting silently for the day it would be unleashed.
Logan walked over to the greatsword and gripped its hilt with both hands before lifting it off the floor. The moment its weight settled onto his arms, he instinctively twisted his body to maintain his balance while settling it on his shoulder.
It was heavy.
Incredibly heavy.
Yet Logan had long since grown accustomed to carrying it.
With the massive blade resting on his shoulder, he returned to the bedroom one last time.
"See? I brought it," he said with a helpless smile.
Only after the woman nodded in satisfaction did Logan finally turn around and leave.
Stepping out of the house, he found that darkness had already blanketed the horizon. The village was unusually quiet, with only the faint chirping of crickets echoing through the night.
A horse stood tied inside the stable.
Logan untied the reins, gently patted its neck, and mounted it in one smooth motion.
"Neiggghhhhhhh." The next instant, the horse burst forward, galloping along the village road.
Meanwhile...
Roughly three hundred meters away from Logan’s home, in the opposite direction from where he had gone, a massive figure slowly emerged from the darkness.
