Chapter 161: The Bottleneck
Solomon grabbed his greatsword from the doorframe. Before he could offer a plan, the wooden rafters above them groaned loudly.
Dust rained down onto the barricaded beds. The attackers in the hallway had realized the doorway was a fatal chokepoint and scaled the exterior walls of the pavilion instead.
Clay roof tiles shattered inward. A dozen masked figures dropped through the ruined ceiling, landing gracefully among the scattered debris.
These assassins carried a much different presence than the earlier grunts. Instead of drawing curved sabers, they held glowing paper talismans between their fingers. One attacker muttered a quick incantation and tossed a yellow seal toward the barricade.
The paper ignited mid-air, transforming into a roaring fireball that shot straight toward Arthur.
Solomon grabbed a broken oak plank from the barricade and hurled it upward to intercept the spell. The wood absorbed the blast, showering the room in harmless embers.
Another cultist pinched two fingers together and pointed at Marco. A hovering longsword zipped across the room, flying entirely on its own guided by invisible qi.
Marco barely raised his twin blades in time to deflect the floating weapon, stumbling as the magical force pushed him back.
[LazyCat: FLYING SWORDS?!]
[Mezz_3863: bro they brought xianxia magic to a sword fight.]
[BloodKnight: Eastern cultivation techniques. The enemy ranks are highly diverse.]
[User12: Arthur cannot catch a break tonight.]
Solomon shifted his stance to adapt to the new threat. The cramped space prevented him from swinging his broadsword freely, so he held the flat side up like a shield. Glowing darts of concentrated qi sparked against the metal.
Pushing forward through the magical barrage, Solomon used his shoulder to bash a spellcaster backward into the stone wall.
"Keep moving so they cannot target you with those seals!" Solomon called out to Marco and Maximus over the sound of exploding talismans.
Elizabeth dashed through the falling debris, parrying a telekinetic strike with her sword before driving her knee into a cultist’s ribs. The confined dormitory descended into a chaotic brawl of clashing steel and flashing spells.
Solomon parried a glowing yellow talisman with the flat of his greatsword. The parchment ignited upon contact, sending a burst of heat across his knuckles. He stepped backward to avoid a second projectile soaring toward his face.
’I have no experience fighting against eastern magic,’ Solomon thought, watching the flashing lights illuminate the dormitory. ’They outnumber us and keep casting spells from a safe distance. Charging blindly into unknown enchantments is a bad choice.’
Maximus pushed past Solomon and raised a bronze shield. A bolt of green lightning struck the metal surface and fizzled out instantly. The impact failed to leave a single scratch on the polished bronze.

"This shield has been passed down through my family for generations," Maximus explained, bracing his boots against the floorboards. "My talent allows me to block almost any attack. I just need ten seconds to recharge the defense after taking a hit."
[LazyCat: 10 second cooldown on an invincibility shield is pretty good.]
[Fatal_beauty: Maximus finally showing his worth.]
[Chi_master: tank class activated.]
Marco stepped up beside Maximus while raising his hands. Two steel longswords hovered in the air right next to him. The weapons darted forward without him ever touching their hilts. They moved fluently through the room, acting as natural extensions of his own arms.
Solomon watched the floating weapons weave through the barrage of spells. He had always wondered about Marco’s talent ever since their duel, and after discovering that Marco was native to this martial world made him even more curious. The spiritual control over twin swords make perfect sense.
"Keep behind my guard until my cooldown finishes," Maximus called out. He stepped into the path of an incoming fireball, letting the flames splash harmlessly against his defense.
"I will handle the spellcasters in the back," Marco added. He flicked his fingers forward, sending his twin swords zipping across the room to strike the intruders.
[BloodKnight: Qi-guided weaponry requires intense focus. Marco is highly skilled.]
[1Fizzy: flying swords are so cool!]
[Mezz_3863: the squad is actually fighting back.]
Solomon stayed near the back of the room and kept his greatsword raised. He deflected a stray ice spike heading toward Elizabeth, making sure she remained safe behind the front line. Elizabeth nodded her thanks and adjusted her grip on her own weapon.
While Maximus and Marco pushed the attackers back, Solomon scanned the remaining students huddled in the corners. One had already revealed his true loyalties.
Solomon kept his eyes darting between the cowering faces, actively searching for anyone else reaching for a hidden weapon.
With a deafening explosion of stone and plaster, the midnight-stone wall of the dormitory splinters inward under the crushing momentum of a massive iron mace.
A heavy shower of dust and stone debris rains down over the wooden barricade, revealing a towering, armored giant of an assassin stepping directly through the newly formed breach.
Solomon, who had been restricted to playing defensive guard and catching stray spells in the back of the room because the cramped dormitory layout prevented him from safely swinging his massive greatsword, let out a profound sigh of relief.
A wild, adrenaline-fueled grin slowly stretched from ear to ear, exposing his teeth as his silver eyes glowed brightly in the darkness. Standing idly by and watching his classmates trade flashy spells had bored him completely.
"Finally," Solomon whispered, his voice trembling with raw excitement. He cracked his knuckles and channeled his internal energy, letting a blinding silver aura flare to life to encase both of his bare hands in a solid protective layer.
He completely ignored the spelling-casting cultists and locked his focus entirely on the mace-wielding giant. "A target I don’t have to pull my punches for."
The massive brute let out a guttural roar and swung the heavy mace in a devastating horizontal arc.
Solomon dropped his center of gravity, utilizing Basic Evasion to slide dangerously close beneath the whistling iron weapon at the very last possible millisecond.
The sheer wind pressure sliced a shallow cut across his cheek, but his Indefatigable passive ability instantly activated, greedily devouring his physical fatigue and converting the impact directly into explosive muscular strength.
Stepping deep inside the giant’s open guard, Solomon pivoted on his heel to generate massive torque. He drove his silver-coated fist straight into the brute’s armored midsection.
The silver aura clashed violently against the heavy plate armor. The brutal physical impact caved the metal breastplate inward completely with a sickening, metallic crunch.
The sheer kinetic force launched the massive assassin completely off his boots, sending his hulking body violently crashing backward through the remainder of the ruined stone wall and out into the open courtyard.
Solomon, eager to blow off steam with his bare fists, did not waste a single second. He leaped through the broken wall directly after his opponent, leaving the stunned students and the screaming cultists behind in the ruined room.
