NTR: Barbarian Harem Conquest

Chapter 303: Challenge (1)

Grathak looked at Kane, indifferent.

"What are you proposing?"

Kane did not raise his voice. He did not reach for Mjoldr. He simply stood in the open space before the throne and answered with the same flat clarity that had already turned the hall silent once.

"A rematch. Public. In front of every banner still inside these walls. No weapons. No essence doses taken after this moment. No handlers, no cages, no private chambers. Just you and me on open ground, under the same rules the packs already understand—strength decides, and the one still standing holds the center."

The pure-blood section exploded again.

"He does not get to set terms—"

"The outsider forgets—"

Grathak’s hand lifted once more. The noise died in uneven stages. Red eyes stayed fixed on Kane.

"No weapons."

"No weapons," Kane repeated. "You already proved you can put me through a wall with your hands. I am offering you the chance to do it again where every pack can see the result. If you win, the southern meeting becomes nothing. The provisional talk dies. I leave your halls, or I stay on whatever terms you name. If I win, the essence work ends, the cages close, and the center answers to the one who walked out of three Measures and then beat the emperor without an axe in his hand."

A pure-blood line head near the front could not stop himself.

"This is insolence dressed as challenge. Emperor—"

Grathak did not look at him.

"You want the packs to watch me break you with my bare hands."

"I want the packs to watch the truth instead of the offers." Kane’s voice stayed level. "You have been injecting refined essence for years. The densification is real. The recovery is real. The southern and river posts that paid for your experiments are also real. A private kill in a locked chamber can be called treachery. A public fight under open rules cannot. The banners already saw me force the Guardian’s fragment to give ground. Let them see what happens when the same variable stands in front of the throne without steel."

Grathak’s scarred muzzle did not smile. The indifference had thinned into something colder.

"You are smaller. You are still carrying damage from the Measures. You have no axe. And you still believe the outcome is in question."

"I believe the packs deserve to see the outcome instead of being told it." Kane shifted his weight slightly, feeling the solid presence of Mjoldr across his back but leaving it untouched. "You can refuse. You can call it beneath you. You can order your lackeys to cut me down where I stand. Every banner in this hall will watch you do it and decide for themselves whether the ruler who needed the order was still fit to hold the center when the sky breaks."

The river-aligned and southern voices that had been present for the earlier coalition sessions were not in the hall, but the pure-bloods felt the weight of the missing factions anyway. Several of them glanced toward the empty places where Vorra’s people and the deeper pragmatic chiefs had sat in previous days.

One of Grathak’s closer lackeys spoke from the wall, voice tight.

"Emperor. Accepting this gives the outsider the stage he wants. Refusing it gives the southern packs the story they want. Either path—"

"I can see the paths," Grathak cut in. He leaned forward on the throne, massive forearms resting on the carved stone, densified bulk seeming to fill more of the dais than it had a moment earlier. "You walked into my laboratory. You took what you saw to be packs that already dislike the price of my preparation. You stood in this hall and called me unfit. Now you ask for a public, unarmed fight so the entire empire can watch the result."

"Yes."

"And if I simply have you removed?"

Kane’s answer came without hesitation.

"Then the southern and river warriors already staging in the corridors will hear that the emperor answered a clean challenge with a quiet knife. The provisional support becomes permanent opposition. The coalition terms collapse. And the seventy days continue with Berakamon already splitting while the essence keeps moving through your blood. You can make that choice. I am only naming the cost."

The pure-blood murmur rose again, angrier and more uncertain. Grathak let it run for a few heartbeats, red eyes never leaving Kane’s face. When he spoke next, the conversational tone was gone entirely.

"Rules."

"Open ground. Upper arena or the main courtyard—your choice. No weapons on either side. No further essence doses from this moment until the fight ends. No interference from guards, handlers, or pure-blood retainers once it begins. The one who cannot continue loses. The packs watch. The center follows the result."

Grathak’s gaze flicked once toward the pure-blood section, then back.

"You are asking me to stake the throne on an unarmed exchange with a human who should still be limping from the last time I put him down."

"I am asking you to prove the densification and the two hundred years are enough without the private laboratory and the measured injections doing part of the work." Kane’s voice stayed flat. "If they are, you break me in front of everyone, and the southern talk dies with me. If they are not, the packs see it and the center changes without a knife in the dark. Either way, ay the uncertainty ends."

A long silence settled over the hall.

The pure-bloods waited for the order that would end the insolence.

The lackeys along the walls had closed ranks, but none of them moved without the emperor’s word.

Grathak studied the smaller figure in front of the dais, the same barbarian who had risen from the underground floor, stood through three Measures, forced a manifestation of the Guardian to withdraw, and was now calmly offering his own body as the public test of the throne’s fitness.

When Grathak finally spoke, the words carried to every corner of the chamber.

"Upper arena. Sunset tomorrow. No weapons. No further doses. The packs will watch. And when I put you down a second time, barbarian, there will be no Measures left to hide behind and no southern corridors left to bargain with."
