Chapter 509: Chapter 508: The Last Thread
Location:Seven Peaks — Formation Hall, Command CenterDate/Time:TC1856.06.14 – TC1856.06.19
Kairos composed the warning transmission at dawn on the fourteenth.
He worked alone in the Formation Hall, the reception array humming its degraded amber while he compressed everything — the temporal transit theory, the remnant material connection, the devourer incursion pattern at remnant sites, the creature’s probable nature, the door’s relationship to the carrier wave — into a transmission packet that his staff could unpack and act on.
The compression was brutal. Channel degradation meant every unnecessary byte risked losing something critical in transit. He stripped the analysis to its skeleton: findings, supporting evidence, confidence levels, and the single question that mattered more than everything else combined.
How much remnant material remains at the documented sites? Were the devourers the only ones who harvested it? Is there enough left for additional constructs — additional creatures — to exist elsewhere?
The packet took three hours to transmit. The channel stuttered. Dropped. Reconnected. Stuttered again. Each gap longer than the last — the dimensional substrate eroding around the pathway like riverbanks crumbling in a flood.
When the final packet confirmed receipt, Kairos sat back and waited.

The days between transmission and reply were not empty.
Raven carried the revelations from the previous night the way she carried everything — internally, structurally, processing the weight through action rather than stillness. She didn’t share the overwritten timeline with the full leadership. Not yet. The knowledge was too raw, too foundational, too likely to reshape how people thought about her if they learned that the woman leading their coalition had already won this war once and had her victory erased.
What she did share was the operational intelligence: the creature was built from material the devourers harvested. The devourers didn’t know what they’d used. The creature and the devourer system were confirmed as separate intelligences operating inside the same architecture. The temporal transit — the system being sent back in time — was made possible by the same material.
Coop processed it through the lattice. Ran the implications against his models. Updated the coalition’s threat assessment to reflect a two-front war against enemies who didn’t know about each other.
Thorne adjusted security protocols. If the devourers eventually arrived and discovered their tool had been co-opted, the resulting confusion could be either an advantage or a catastrophe. He planned for both.
Taron intensified training rotations. The anti-shadowspawn curriculum expanded to include scenarios where void-construct engagement overlapped with unknown-threat response — fighting what you’d trained for while adapting to something you hadn’t.
The pulse held at six seconds. Steady. Patient. Counting.

The reply arrived on the nineteenth. Five days. The longest gap between transmission and receipt since Kairos had manifested on Ascara.
The data assembled in fragments — worse than before. Whole sections corrupted beyond recovery. The channel was dying. Not collapsing suddenly the way Kairos had feared but degrading incrementally, each exchange consuming more of the pathway’s remaining integrity. The dimensional thread between Ascara and the Observatory was fraying strand by strand.
But the core finding survived. Priority-flagged. Compressed to the absolute minimum by staff who understood that this might be the last data they could send.
Remnant material survey complete. Cross-referenced all seven documented sites against current substrate readings and historical extraction logs.
