The transmission arrived at three hundred hours. Fragmented. Stuttering. The dimensional channel between Ascara and the Liminal Observatory was thinning with each exchange — but holding. Barely.

Kairos assembled the data in the Formation Hall. Barefoot. Robe half-fastened. The reception array pulsing amber as packets arrived out of sequence, reconstructing themselves through the degraded pathway like letters assembled from a shredded page.

Forty minutes for the full transmission. Longer than the last. The channel was wearing thinner.

But it held.

The Observatory’s reply contained three elements.

The first was the status report — substrate anomalies across multiple worlds, dimensional boundaries fluctuating at depths that shouldn’t have been affected by surface events. The door’s construction wasn’t a local event. Whatever it was connecting to, the process was straining the dimensional substrate globally.

The second was the war-era search results. Mostly corrupted in transit — large sections lost to channel degradation. What survived was fragments: partial references to dimensional ruptures during the ancient conflicts, incomplete classifications of entities that had crossed between realities. And one intact paragraph from a report so old its formatting predated the current Accord system.

During the final phase of the Celestial War, dimensional tears created unprecedented contact between separate reality frameworks. Most cross-reality entities were destroyed during the sealing process. A small number of remnants — fragments, echoes, residual presences — were documented in the sealed substrate layers. These remnants were classified as inert. No sustained cross-reality presence has been confirmed since the sealing.

The third was the answer to Raven’s question about "home." Three sentences, priority-flagged.

No classified dimensional entity in the Accord’s registry has used the concept of "home" in breach context. Hostile entities breach to consume, conquer, or corrupt.

However: one unclassified reference exists in pre-Accord archival material. A notation from the sealing period describes a remnant presence that, during the final moments before dimensional closure, transmitted a signal interpreted by the sealing team as directional. The team’s annotation reads: "It was trying to go back."

Raven arrived at four hundred. The mark had told her — the spike in his heart rate.

She read the transmission. Read the five words. Set the report down.

"It was trying to go back," she said. "But we don’t know what that means."

"It could mean home. Something caught on the wrong side, seeking return. Or it could mean something else entirely. Retreating to report. Carrying intelligence." She paused. "The notation tells us direction. Not intent."

"Agreed. The motive is unclear."

Kairos was quiet. But not the quiet of agreement — the quiet of something building. His eyes had moved from the report to the middle distance, the way they did when his awareness was processing at depths his mortal body couldn’t quite support. Raven had learned to recognise this state — the specific stillness that preceded his most significant observations.
